The impact of fuels on aircraft technology through the year 2000

In the future, it may be necessary to use jet fuels with a broader range of properties in order to insure a more flexible and reliable supply and to minimize energy consumption and processing costs at the refinery. This paper describes research being conducted to (1) determine the potential range of properties for future jet fuels, (2) establish a data base of fuel property effects on propulsion system components, (3) evolve and evaluate advanced component technology that would permit the use of broader property fuels and (4) identify technical and economic trade-offs within the overall fuel production-air transportation system associated with variations in fuel properties.

Eye-voice-controlled interface

The Ocular Attention-Sensing Interface System (OASIS) is an innovative human-computer interface which utilizes eye movement and voice commands to communicate messages between the operator and the system. This report initially describes some technical issues relevant to the development of such an interface. The results of preliminary experiments which evaluate alternative eye processing algorithms and feedback techniques are presented. Candidate interface applications are also discussed.

Space station pressurized laboratory safety guidelines

Before technical safety guidelines and requirements are established, a common understanding of their origin and importance must be shared between Space Station Program Management, the User Community, and the Safety organizations involved. Safety guidelines and requirements are driven by the nature of the experiments, and the degree of crew interaction. Hazard identification; development of technical safety requirements; operating procedures and constraints; provision of training and education; conduct of reviews and evaluations; and emergency preplanning are briefly discussed.

Power beaming research at NASA

NASA's current research activities to evaluate laser power beaming systems are summarized with regard to their applications of greatest interest. Key technical certainties and uncertainties pertaining to laser power beaming systems appropriate for space applications are quantified. A path of development is presented that includes maturation of key technology components for reliable laser and millimeter wave power beaming systems during the 1990s.

System Issues Related to Implementing on the Internet

Implementing capabilities on the World Wide Web should never be taken lightly. A good systems engineer is able to examine such implementations from all points of view, including political, legal, security, access, technical deployment, and quality. The evacuation discussed in this paper was conducted to ensure that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was proceeding in a correct direction by implementing RECALL a Lessons Learned System on the Web and, subsequently, did so successfully. The systems approach extended well beyond technical implementation to several issue that are not often addressed by an implementation team. The resulting evaluation increased the team's sensitivity to such issues and, in fact, the authors believe that the evaluation provided as much benefit as the system itself.

Technology Readiness Level (TRL) as the foundation of Human Readiness Level (HRL)

As space programs became more complex, it became evident to NASA that a means of defining a methodological way to evaluate the maturity of technologies for spacecraft design was needed for risk assessment that could affect technical, cost and schedule. NASA first saw that infusing technology intoNASA programs required some means to assess technology maturity like flight readiness for a mission. Hence, a seven-point technology readiness level scale was developed in the mid-70s by a NASA researcher and later formally defined in 1989 (Sadin et al., 1989) that comprised of seven levels (See Table 1). These levels provided a definitive meaning of what complexity a research and technology development program should be followed. NASA recognized the approach as a useful way of an effective assessment of,and communication regarding the maturity of new technologies, using a simplistic figure of merit, the state of maturity of a technology-particularly, critical technology necessary to meet a mission/application objective

Following the αCen Ab Candidate Using the Roman Coronagraph Instrument

The Roman Space Telescope Coronagraph offers a unique opportunity to observe our nearest solar twin, Alpha Centauri A, and characterize the habitable-zone gas giant candidate, Alpha Cen Ab. The candidate uniquely stands out among all imaged exoplanets to date as the one most similar in temperature, age and location to the planets in our own Solar System. Roman CGI offers the tantalizing opportunity to observe the candidate—determining its radius, temperature, and albedo—and to constrain its orbit. Observing Alpha Cen Ab with Roman would make it the first exoplanet to be imaged in both thermal emission and reflected light and would motivate an exciting search for habitable exomoons with the upcoming ELTs and HWO. In addition, this candidate will inform the planet formation history and current dynamics of the Alpha Centauri AB system, including potentially habitable planets around both stars. In this talk, we describe our plan to observe this target using the Roman CGI, including the timing strategy to minimize contrast and avoid background objects. We also describe the key technical insights about coronagraph performance that we aim to gain, such as measuring companion leakage intensity, evaluating the impact of the large stellar diameter, and assessing CGI performance on very bright targets. In subsequent observations, we aim to demonstrate Multi-Star Wavefront Control (MSWC) on-sky, observing Alpha Cen A using the Wide FoV Shaped Pupil MSWC contributed mode in the Roman CGI. The insights from these technology demonstrations are crucial preparation for the planned HWO mission.

Methylmercury Retention Evaluation to Support Tank 50 and Saltstone Waste Acceptance Criteria: Parts 2 and 3

The objective of this work was to provide a technical basis for the organic mercury waste acceptance criterion (WAC) for Tank 50 salt solution. The current mercury WAC for Tank 50 solution is 325 mg/L as Hg regardless of the form of mercury, which is about three times higher than any total Hg concentrations measured to date in Tank 50 solution. To date, the highest total Hg and MeHg + concentrations in the Tank 50 solution were 105 and 62 mg/L, respectively.
