Scalable, Physical Effects Measureable Microgridfor Cyber Resilience Analysis

SPEMMCRA provides a low-cost simulated method to provide for testing of control theory and cybersecurity approaches to microgrid implementations. Specifically, this physics-based approach provides realistic responses to compare control strategies in simulation, but also to demonstrate actions that can or cannot be taken in taking cybersecurity actions . As communications interfaces or other actions are taken that affect the flow of data, SPEMMCRA can show whether the microgrid operation is adversely affected by what is intended to mitigate a cybersecurity event.

Cyber State Awareness For Resilience

Characterization of cyber-physical attacks requires a holistic understanding of cyber and physical behavior in a system. Machine Learning Anomaly Detection provides a compelling solution for continuously identifying suspicious behavior within these complex systems. In our software, we present an approach for holistic characterization of cyber-physical systems based on cyber and physical anomaly correlation. The approach consists of three main components: 1) an architecture for real-time data acquisition, management, and analysis of both cyber and physical data; 2) cyber and physical data driven anomaly detection systems (ADSs), 3) a metric that combines cyber and physical ADSs to provide a holistic characterization of the system..

Improving high temperature resilience of fiber sensor embedded smart components through laser shock peening

This study explores the use of laser shock peening (LSP) to enhance material properties and high-temperature performance of fiber-sensor-fused smart parts fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) methods. Using embedded fiber sensors as distributed strain gauges, the study demonstrates that LSP can induce compressive strains of up to 130 µε on fiber embedded 1-mm below metal surfaces. The electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis shows that, with optimized LSP parameters, the metallic matrix undergoes substantial microstructural refinement, resulting in denser structures. Thermal cycling tests showed that the LSP process can increase fiber slippage temperatures by more than 50 °C. This work shows that the LSP process is an effective room-temperature process for enhancing both surface quality and increasing fiber slippage threshold under both thermal and mechanical stress.

Scalable, resilient, and configurable permissioned blockchain fabric

With the advent of Bitcoin, the interest of the database community in blockchain systems has steadily grown. Many existing blockchain applications use blockchains as a platform for monetary transactions, however. We deviate from this philosophy and present ResilientDB, which can serve in a suite of non-monetary data-processing blockchain applications. Our ResilientDB uses state-of-the-art technologies and includes a novel visualization that helps in monitoring the state of the blockchain application.

Community Resilience through Low-Temperature Geothermal Reservoir Thermal Energy Storage

Submitted data include simulations related to underground thermal battery (UTB) simulations described in Modeling and efficiency study of large scale underground thermal battery deployment, presented at GRC, October 2021. The UTB is comprised of a tank of water, a helical heat exchanger in the center of tank and connected to a water source heat pump, and a phase change material (PCM). Compared to a conventional VBGHE, the UTB is designed to be installed at a much shallower depth, therefore, with a cheaper cost. In addition, the GSHP efficiency is improved due to natural convection of water and additional load capacity provided by PCM. The goal of this study is to explore factors that may affect the efficiency of large-scale UTB deployment. The simulations found in this submission relate to the report on UTB deployment.

RADIATION DOSE SIMULATIONS FOR JEFFERSON LAB’S PERMANENT MAGNET RESILIENCY LDRD STUDY

In late 2023, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facil- ity (Jefferson Lab) funded a Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) grant dedicated to investigating the impact of radiation on permanent magnet materials. This research initiative is specifically geared towards assessing materials slated for use in the CEBAF energy upgrade. The experimental approach involves strategically placing perma- nent magnet samples throughout the accelerator, exposing them to varying radiation doses. The simulation code BD- SIM is used to first validate the data and then to simulate the effects on future higher energy passes to study the degra- dation effects on the permanent magnets. In this paper we present the progress of that work.

Current status of permanent magnet radiation resiliency studies at CEBAF

One possible future for Jefferson Lab’s Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) lies in upgrading its maximum nominal energy using Fixed-Field Alternating-gradient (FFA) technology for its recirculating arcs. The current proposal aims to use permanent magnets to supply the fixed fields. One concern among reviewers is the degradation of these permanent magnets during operation due to the radiation environment in which they will be present. This work, funded by a Laboratory Directed R&D grant, aims to measure the magnet degradation in the CEBAF tunnel enclosure, and extrapolate to the energies expected from the upgrade. We present the latest results of this study, as well as plans moving forward.

Modeling Impacts of Resilience Architectures for Extreme-Scale Storage Systems

The Scientific Modeling and Simulation of Storage project focused on improving our ability to store information reliably. The project, done jointly at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Los Alamos National Laboratories, and Sandia National Laboratories, had the main goal of transforming the art of reliable storage system construction into a more precise science. Along those lines, the project developed numerous tools to expose problems in existing systems; these tools, when applied to the state of the art, uncovered numerous flaws in existing approaches, showing that they both are error prone and in some cases contain serious design flaws. The project also led to the creation of new approaches in reliable system construction. One such approach shows how a storage system can adapt its behavior on the fly to deliver higher performance when there are few underlying failures, but then act more conservatively when more failures are occurring to ensure the safe storage of user data. Another approach develops a storage system consistency model which both delivers high performance but high levels of reliability, a significant advance over previous approaches. Overall, the tools developed within the project advanced the science of reliable storage design, and the new approaches that resulted advanced the science of storage system construction.

PNT Resilience RFI Response

The use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a fundamental requirement for most navigation systems today, and this heavy reliance means that denial of GPS service (or extended threats) can pose a significant risk to modern navigation. There is an urgent need for enabling, high-accuracy navigation technologies that can operate without the need for GPS. Ideally, these solutions must be able to initialize in a completely GPS-free environment and continue to navigate even through challenging scenarios. The increasing risk posed to GPS means that trust in this platform is waning—and solutions are required. A future navigator should leverage GPS whenever possible and be capable of identifying and responding to risks while maintaining mission accuracy needs. In the absence of GPS, fully alternative navigation (altnav) technologies are required. This report describes an introductory view of altnav for GPS-impaired and contested environments. Various technologies are collected, presented, and evaluated as potential solutions. A wide snapshot of currently available technologies with a first-order summary of their potential is presented. While this report attempts to be as broad and complete as possible, this is a quickly evolving field.

Robust and resilient coordination of feeders with uncertain distributed energy resources: from real-time control to long-term planning

To enable flexible demand and ensure reliable and economical operation of distribution systems, we present a novel hierarchical scheme that actively coordinates responsive behind-the-meter grid resources, including distributed energy resources (DERs), to reliably manage each unbalanced distribution feeder and exploits the available flexibility to economically optimize the entire network. Each layer of the scheme employs advanced optimization methods at different timescales to ensure that the system operates within both grid and device limits. The hierarchy is validated in a large-scale realistic simulation based on data from the industry. Simulation results show that coordination of flexibility improves both system reliability and economics, and enables greater penetration of solar PV. Discussion is also provided on the practical viability of the required communications and controls to implement the presented scheme within a large DSO.

A novel approach to mitigating the potential release of radioisotopes under fire conditions - enhancing fire resiliency of radiological contamination fixatives during deactivation & decommissioning activities

Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), in close collaboration with the Florida International University Applied Research Center (FIU ARC), successfully executed a technology development activity on behalf of the Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management (DOE EM). The purpose of the activity was to improve the capability of fixative technologies in immobilizing residual contamination when exposed to thermal stressors as postulated in accident scenarios in Basis for Interim Operations (BIO) documents across the DOE EM complex. The effort resulted in the test and evaluation of a down-selected, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) intumescent technology in a radioactive environment at the Savannah River Site (SRS) Building 235-F Plutonium Fuel Form (PuFF) Facility and highlighted the potential use of this technology as a stand-alone, fire retardant fixative. Furthermore, this activity highlighted significant shortfalls in common fixatives currently used to support decommissioning activities and brought to the forefront the need for a methodical, uniformed approach to certifying fixative technologies for operational use in Deactivation and Decommissioning (D&D) activities. An essential component of this research was to evaluate the state of industry fixatives currently in use and set the foundation for comparison to alternative technological solutions. A baseline of five (5) commonly used fixatives and decontamination gels (hereafter collectively referred to as fixatives) was conducted, and notable shortfalls and deficiencies were revealed, particularly when exposed to thermal, water, and other environmental stressors. At temperatures as low as 300 °F - 400 °F (148.89 °C – 204.44 °C), all commonly used fixatives melted from the substrates within 3-5 minutes of exposure, resulting in contaminant transport. Significant degradation in terms of mass loss, desiccation, and off-gassing occurred, and the chemical breakdown of the polymer was so complete researchers assessed there would likely have been a release of residual contamination. Additional vulnerabilities became evident when exposed to water immersion and high humidity; existing fixatives took up water, swelling and frequently delaminating from the substrate, once again increasing the likelihood of a contaminant release.
