Active control of a flexible beam

Because of inherent low damping and high flexibility, large space structures may require some form of active control of their dynamics. Because of the apparent inability to accurately model the dynamics of these structures, methods for parameter adaptive control are now being developed at Langley. This approach uses a digital computer to process discrete sensor data, identify modal parameters, calculate modal control gains, and then convert the modal forces to real forces. Some of the problems considered are: (1) the possibility that there may be modes to control with limited amounts of hardware, and (2) the required accuracy of identified structural parameters.

Modular design attitude control system

Application of modular control techniques to the attitude control of a prototype flexible spacecraft and a prototype flexible space platform was further developed by determining numerical values for the physical parameters of a four body approximation of the MSFC/hybrid deployable truss incorporated in the space platform model, generating sensitivity coefficients for the model of the flexible spacecraft, evaluating the changes in the digital computer simulation of the flexible spacecraft resulting from the addition of another rigid body to the model and comparing attitude control effectiveness with actuators on more than one rigid body of the model with that for the case in which the actuators were restricted to one body.

Development of a distributed-parameter mathematical model for simulation of cryogenic wind tunnels

A one-dimensional distributed-parameter dynamic model of a cryogenic wind tunnel was developed which accounts for internal and external heat transfer, viscous momentum losses, and slotted-test-section dynamics. Boundary conditions imposed by liquid-nitrogen injection, gas venting, and the tunnel fan were included. A time-dependent numerical solution to the resultant set of partial differential equations was obtained on a CDC CYBER 203 vector-processing digital computer at a usable computational rate. Preliminary computational studies were performed by using parameters of the Langley 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel. Studies were performed by using parameters from the National Transonic Facility (NTF). The NTF wind-tunnel model was used in the design of control loops for Mach number, total temperature, and total pressure and for determining interactions between the control loops. It was employed in the application of optimal linear-regulator theory and eigenvalue-placement techniques to develop Mach number control laws.

Stable feedback control of distributed parameter systems: Time and frequency domain conditions

Large space structures, or any mechanically flexible structures, are inherently distributed parameter systems (DPS) whose dynamics are modeled by partial, rather than ordinary, differential equations. Such DPS are described by operator equations on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert (or Banach) space. However, any feedback controller for such a DPS must be a finite-dimensional (and discrete-time) system in order to be implemented with on-line digital computers and a finite (small) number of actuators and sensors. There are many ways to synthesize such controllers; the Galerkin or finite-element approach is emphasized.

Initial analysis of OSTA-1 ocean color experiment imagery

NASA's Ocean Color Experiment (OCE) was designed to map ocean features with an eight-channel scanning radiometer installed on the second flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Digital computer enhancement and band-ratio techniques were applied to radiometrically corrected spectral data in order to emphasize chlorophyll distribution patterns. Such a pattern was evident in the Yellow Sea between Korea and China, and the effects of discharge from the Yangtze and other rivers were also observed. Two scenes, from orbits 30 and 32, revealed the movement of plankton patches in the Gulf of Cadiz. Geometric correction of the images permitted ocean current velocities to be deduced, and water depth variability over the Grand Bahama Bank was estimated by means of OCE's blue-green channel. Bottom-reflected sunlight produced a sensor signal that was inversely related to water depth.

OSTA-1/Ocean Color Experiment

Ocean Color Experiment (OCE) on the OSTA-1 mission acquired ocean images at several widely separated locations on the earth. Digital computer enhancement and band ratioing techniques were used to emphasize patterns of chlorophyll and sediment distribution in the Yellow Sea and, in one case, of bottom topography in the Great Bahama Bank. Two scenes in the Gulf of Cadiz from orbits 30 and 32 were geometrically corrected to show the movement of plankton patches. This technique enabled ocean current velocities to be deduced. A duplicate of the OCE instrument mounted on a DFVLR aircraft was flown over an area of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal during the Shuttle mission.

Improved spatial mapping of rainfall events with spaceborne SAR imagery

The Seasat satellite acquired the first spaceborne synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images of the earth's surface, in 1978, at a frequency of 1.275 GHz (L-band) in a like-polarization mode at incidence angles of 23 + or - 3 deg. Although this may not be the optimum system configuration for radar remote sensing of soil moisture, interpretation of two Seasat images of Iowa demonstrates the sensitivity of microwave backscatter to soil moisture content. In both scenes, increased image brightness, which represents more radar backscatter, can be related to previous rainfall activity in the two areas. Comparison of these images with ground-based rainfall observations illustrates the increased spatial coverage of the rainfall event that can be obtained from the satellite SAR data. These data can then be color-enhanced by a digital computer to produce aesthetically pleasing output products for the user community.

Control of the constrained planar simple inverted pendulum

Control of a constrained planar inverted pendulum by eigenstructure assignment is considered. Linear feedback is used to stabilize and decouple the system in such a way that specified subspaces of the state space are invariant for the closed-loop system. The effectiveness of the feedback law is tested by digital computer simulation. Pre-compensation by an inverse plant is used to improve performance.

On the feasibility of real-time prediction of aircraft carrier motion at sea

Landing aircraft on board carriers is a most delicate phase of flight operations at sea. The ability to predict the aircraft carrier's motion over an interval of several seconds within reasonable error bounds may allow an improvement in touchdown dispersion and reduce the value of the ramp clearance due to a smoother aircraft trajectory. Also, improved information to the landing signal officer should decrease the number of waveoffs substantially. This paper indicates and shows quantitatively that, based upon the power density spectrum data for pitch and heave measured for various ships and sea conditions, the motion can be predicted well, for up to 15 s. Moreover, the zero crossover times for both pitch and heave motions can be predicted with impressive accuracy. The predictor was designed on the basis of Kalman's optimum filtering theory (the discrete time case), being compatible with real-time digital computer operation.

Space Telescope pointing control

The Space Telescope Pointing Control System is used to slew the optical axis of the telescope from one target star region of the celestial sphere to the next, and to maintain precision pointing on the target star. A digital computer is employed in the processing of attitude and rate sensor data, in order to generate torque commands for the reaction wheels. The System comprises four major elements: a command generator, the electronic control system, attitude update processing, and momentum management. Emphasis is given to control-related flexibility effects of the Space Telescope's solar cell array and vehicle, and the acquisition methodology and development testing employed, in addition to Pointing Control System design features.

A simulation study of the low-speed characteristics of a light twin with an engine-out

Potential safety advantages provided by the two engines on a light twin aircraft are not realized in practice as evidenced by recent engine-failure accident statistics. These statistics showed twice the fatality rate from engine failure for twins as for single-engine aircraft. The statistics showed also that one-half of the fatal engine-out accidents involved a stall. An improvement of the low-speed engine-out characteristics is, therefore, needed. An investigation of the engine-out characteristics of light twin-engine aircraft is currently being conducted as part of the comprehensive stall/spin program for general aviation aircraft. The present study is concerned with the first phase of this program. The primary objective of this study is to advance the understanding of the basic flight dynamics and piloting problems for an engine-out condition. An all-digital computer system was used in the conducted simulation study.

The calculation of transport phenomena in electromagnetically levitated metal droplets

A mathematical representation has been developed for the electromagnetic force field, fluid flow field, and solute concentration field of levitation-melted metal specimens. The governing equations consist of the conventional transport equations combined with the appropriate expressions for the electromagnetic force field. The predictions obtained by solving the governing equations numerically on a digital computer are in good agreement with lifting force and average temperature measurements reported in the literature.

Finite-dimensional discrete-time control of linear distributed parameter systems

Systems described by partial differential equations have an infinite-dimensional state space. Feedback control of such distributed parameter systems must be accomplished by finite-dimensional controllers to be implemented by on-line digital computers. A further practical constraint is that the controller must operate in discrete (rather than continuous) time. This paper investigates the stability of such distributed parameter feedback controllers in closed-loop with the actual system.

Display research: Pilot response with the ""follow-me'' box display

A study of display configurations and their effect on pilot-aircraft system response was undertaken. An examination of conventional displays was done to provide a set of data that can be used for comparison with advanced displays. An examination of an advanced display design that includes the use of a digital computer and a cathode ray tube to provide a drawing of a three dimensional box is done. The results show the improvement in system performance that can be obtained with the advanced display. Studies were conducted using the General Aviation Simulator, but verification of the results with the advanced display was also obtained from flight tests.

Reflectance Measurements, Part 2

Improving the productivity of spectroreflectometer readings taken to monitor induced contamination of lenses, mirrors, and coatings in the space environment are described. More sophisticated modelling techniques were applied to the laboratory data collected last summer in order to produce a more accurate model of the nonlinearities and noise sources of the instrumentation. This would ultimately allow for correction of known anomalies by the digital computer, yielding an anticipated order to magnitude improvement in the accuracy of the reflectance measurements, while reducing the total measuring time. The construction of and programming for a modernized version of the electronics used in Beckman DK-2 spectroreflectometers suffered because of a schedule lag in fabrication of a modified form of the carrier frequency pickoff. Separate development of the electronics and the computer programming was partially accomplished.

Exhibit D modular design attitude control system study

A dynamically equivalent four body approximation of the NASTRAN finite element model supplied for hybrid deployable truss to support the digital computer simulation of the ten body model of the flexible space platform that incorporates the four body truss model were investigated. Coefficients for sensitivity of state variables of the linearized model of the three axes rotational dynamics of the prototype flexible spacecraft were generated with respect to the model's parameters. Software changes required to accommodate addition of another rigid body to the five body model of the rotational dynamics of the prototype flexible spacecraft were evaluated.
