Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics: RADx (Tech + ATP)

This virtual symposium was held to highlight the impact the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Virtual Biotechnology Laboratory (NVBL) has had utilizing the unique capabilities of the DOE to tackle the science and technology challenges associated with COVID-19, and to discuss areas in which the NVBL can have impact in the future. With perspectives from Chris Fall, Director, Office of Science, DOE, and William A. Bookless, Principal Deputy Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, the event featured Presentations from lead investigators reporting progress in: Epidemiological modeling, Therapeutics, Testing, Understanding transport of the virus, and Solving issues around supply chain challenges. In addition, keynote speakers from outside the NVBL discussed the upcoming science and technology needs in computing, testing and surveillance, and vaccines. The event was aimed at the S&T community, media, and general public.

Enhanced Beam Diagnostics with Existing BPPMs via GPU-powered Multi-Particle Simulation

This research aims to utilize the multi-particle code, High-Performance Simulator (HPSim), to realistically model the Side-Coupled-Cavity Linac (CCL) lattice of the LANSCE accelerator. This new model would allow us to predict the beam’s bunch length (the longitudinal spread), which is unavailable for individual accelerating modules or only accessible at the end of the linac. However, a correct bunch length is critical for the high-energy beam transport after the CCL. Its impact would be most significant in the Proton Storage Ring (PSR), where we should be able to reduce losses for the circulating beam. The PSR is scheduled to have a 25% current increase for the neutron spallation target upgrade at the Lujan Center. A highly bunched beam would be necessary to reduce the particle losses and lower the radiation levels produced from the ring. A realistic HPSim model with >1M macro-particles can help tackle the beam losses at the sub-percent level. This new work would also create a realistic surrogate model for future machine learning projects.

Femtosecond Reflectance Spectroscopy for Energetic Material Diagnostics

Understanding the fundamental mechanisms underpinning shock initiation is critical to predicting energetic material (EM) safety and performance. Currently, the timescales and pathways by which shock-excited lattice modes transfer energy into specific chemical bonds remains an open question. Towards understanding these mechanisms, our group has previously measured the vibrational energy transfer (VET) pathways in several energetic thin films using broadband, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. However, new technologies are needed to move beyond these thin film surrogates and measure broadband VET pathways in realistic EM morphologies. Herein, we describe a new broadband, femtosecond, attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy apparatus. Performance of the system is benchmarked against published data and the first VET results from a pressed EM pellet are presented. This technology enables fundamental studies of VET dynamics across sample configurations and environments (pressure, temperature, etc .) and supports the potential use of VET studies in the non-destructive surveillance of EM components.

Advanced Diagnostics of Broad Spectrum Multipactor

Multipactor is a resonance event between electron emission and RF fields causing exponential secondary electron re-emission growth when the secondary electron yield of the primary electron impact energy exceeds unity. Multipactor is a serious problem in vacuum electron devices (VEDs) such as particle accelerators, radars, electronic warfare systems, directed energy devices, and even Hall effect thrusters. It also poses an even greater threat to space communication systems where high power, multi-channel links are required. The UC Davis and SLAC team will conduct basic research to advance the fundamental understanding of multipactor physics by developing and carrying out full spectrum, radio frequency (RF) laboratory tests aimed at understanding both single and two-surface multipactor phenomena and at evaluating novel multipactor mitigation approaches for accelerator, space-based RF systems, as well as high power microwave (HPM) applications.

Diagnostic and predictive capabilities of the TCR digital platform

The Transformational Challenge Reactor program is leveraging additive manufacturing technologies to fabricate the nuclear components required to assemble a microreactor core. Compared with traditional manufacturing processes, additive manufacturing allows for direct observation of the interior of the component during manufacturing. This unique capability promises significant possibilities for creating a new paradigm for nuclear component qualification by leveraging in-situ process data. This report describes FY21 efforts to predict material tensile properties based on data collected during the laser powder bed fusion printing process. The primary focus of this report is the test campaign designed to generate the large quantities of training data required to implement artificial intelligence algorithms that can predict these material properties. Preliminary prediction results and a demonstration of the overall data collection, analysis, and visualization pipeline are also provided.

NucD-23 Nuclear Diagnostics Development: The future of neutron imaging and gamma reaction history

The Neutron Imaging team has deployed novel, active detection systems along two lines of sight at NIF. Studies aimed to characterize NIS sensitivity to implosion shape will be carried out to further extend reconstruction capabilities. Additionally, an improved camera timing system that will reduce uncertainties stemming from bang time jitter will also be fielded. The NIF GRH data recording system is more then 10 years old needs to be updated. Bandwidth and noise are a key limiting factor for improving data quality. New high bandwidth and low noise components will be tested at OMEGA in advance before fielding the components at NIF.
