Economical phased-array antenna for environmental applications

Antenna system handles data acquisition and tracking, functions as a sensitive radio telescope, and serves as a radiometer in earth atmosphere investigations. Antenna's sensitivity permits resolution of solar disk quadrants in Doppler radar observations. Antenna also serves as a planetary radar device and link to commercial aircraft.

Assess program: Interactive data management systems for airborne research

Two data systems were developed for use in airborne research. Both have distributed intelligence and are programmed for interactive support among computers and with human operators. The C-141 system (ADAMS) performs flight planning and telescope control functions in addition to its primary role of data acquisition; the CV-990 system (ADDAS) performs data management functions in support of many research experiments operating concurrently. Each system is arranged for maximum reliability in the first priority function, precision data acquisition.

Investigation of Structure-Property Relationships in Systematic Series of Novel Polymers

The results are discussed of the on-line interface of the Torsional Braid Analysis experiment to an Hierarchical Computer System for data acquisition, data reduction and control of experimental variables. Some experimental results are demonstrated and the data reduction procedures are outlined. Several modes of presentation of the final computer-reduced data are discussed in an attempt to elucidate possible interrelations between the thermal variation of the rigidity and loss parameters.

Operations manual: On Site Monitor (OSM), solar heating and cooling systems

The on-site monitor is a portable device which, when connected to a solar system site data acquisition subsystem; allows readouts of clock and sensor data in voltage or engineering units at instrumented solar heating and cooling sites. The unit is described and procedures for its proper operation are presented.

Mission specification for three generic mission classes

Mission specifications for three generic mission classes are generated to provide a baseline for definition and analysis of data acquisition platform system concepts. The mission specifications define compatible groupings of sensors that satisfy specific earth resources and environmental mission objectives. The driving force behind the definition of sensor groupings is mission need; platform and space transportation system constraints are of secondary importance. The three generic mission classes are: (1) low earth orbit sun-synchronous; (2) geosynchronous; and (3) non-sun-synchronous, nongeosynchronous. These missions are chosen to provide a variety of sensor complements and implementation concepts. Each mission specification relates mission categories, mission objectives, measured parameters, and candidate sensors to orbits and coverage, operations compatibility, and platform fleet size.

Determining spacecraft angular position with Delta VLBI - The Voyager demonstration

A demonstration of a new VLBI-based radio metric data type for interplanetary navigation has been conducted using the Voyager spacecraft on their approach to Saturn. Pseudo-range measurements from stations on intercontinental baselines were employed, in conjunction with interferometric observations of quasars, to obtain a precise measure of the spacecraft angular position. In addition to its high accuracy this technique requires significantly less station time than conventional range and Doppler and can be used in a downlink only mode. The paper describes the data type, acquisition system, and processing procedures. Anticipated measurement accuracy is established by analysis of various system error sources. Results obtained from Voyager observations are given to show that the system performance is in accordance with expectations.

The effect of incidence angle on the overall three-dimensional aerodynamic performance of a classical annular airfoil cascade

To be of quantitative value to the designer and analyst, it is necessary to experimentally verify the flow modeling and the numerics inherent in calculation codes being developed to predict the three dimensional flow through turbomachine blade rows. This experimental verification requires that predicted flow fields be correlated with three dimensional data obtained in experiments which model the fundamental phenomena existing in the flow passages of modern turbomachines. The Purdue Annular Cascade Facility was designed specifically to provide these required three dimensional data. The overall three dimensional aerodynamic performance of an instrumented classical airfoil cascade was determined over a range of incidence angle values. This was accomplished utilizing a fully automated exit flow data acquisition and analysis system. The mean wake data, acquired at two downstream axial locations, were analyzed to determine the effect of incidence angle, the three dimensionality of the cascade exit flow field, and the similarity of the wake profiles. The hub, mean, and tip chordwise airfoil surface static pressure distributions determined at each incidence angle are correlated with predictions from the MERIDL and TSONIC computer codes.

Capabilities and limitations of the Jicamarca radar as an MST radar

The Jicamarca radar (Long. 76.52W, Lat. 11.56S), located at 20 km from Lima at approximately 500 meters over sea level, is surrounded by mountains which provide a good shield from man-made interference. The radio horizon goes from a few hundred meters, across the dry valley where it is located, to 15 km, along the valley in the direction of the continental divide. This limits the clutter to 15 km, except for one high peak at 21 km. It is the most equatorial of all existing MST radars. Its proximity to the Andes, makes its location unique for the study of lee waves and orographic-induced turbulence. Vertical as well as horizontal projections of MST velocities are obtained by simultaneously pointing with different sections of the antenna into three or four different directions. The transmitters, receivers, and systems for data acquisition, processing, and control are included.

Real-time closed-loop simulation and upset evaluation of control systems in harsh electromagnetic environments

Digital control systems for applications such as aircraft avionics and multibody systems must maintain adequate control integrity in adverse as well as nominal operating conditions. For example, control systems for advanced aircraft, and especially those with relaxed static stability, will be critical to flight and will, therefore, have very high reliability specifications which must be met regardless of operating conditions. In addition, multibody systems such as robotic manipulators performing critical functions must have control systems capable of robust performance in any operating environment in order to complete the assigned task reliably. Severe operating conditions for electronic control systems can result from electromagnetic disturbances caused by lightning, high energy radio frequency (HERF) transmitters, and nuclear electromagnetic pulses (NEMP). For this reason, techniques must be developed to evaluate the integrity of the control system in adverse operating environments. The most difficult and illusive perturbations to computer-based control systems that can be caused by an electromagnetic environment (EME) are functional error modes that involve no component damage. These error modes are collectively known as upset, can occur simultaneously in all of the channels of a redundant control system, and are software dependent. Upset studies performed to date have not addressed the assessment of fault tolerant systems and do not involve the evaluation of a control system operating in a closed-loop with the plant. A methodology for performing a real-time simulation of the closed-loop dynamics of a fault tolerant control system with a simulated plant operating in an electromagnetically harsh environment is presented. In particular, considerations for performing upset tests on the controller are discussed. Some of these considerations are the generation and coupling of analog signals representative of electromagnetic disturbances to a control system under test, analog data acquisition, and digital data acquisition from fault tolerant systems. In addition, a case study of an upset test methodology for a fault tolerant electromagnetic aircraft engine control system is presented.

A model-based approach to the symbolic control of space subsystems

A multilayered approach to the symbolic control of complex electromechanical assemblies, such as spaceborne thermal, power, and life subsystems, is discussed. An example of this approach is given in some recent tests of the Thermal Expert System (TEXSYS) in control of the Boeing Aerospace Thermal Bus System (BATBS), a prototype two-phase Space Station Freedom thermal bus. The BATBS hardware requires read-update-act cycles of under a minute, and it is subject to dynamic reconfiguration while operating. These performance requirements are addressed by layering model-based expert system software on a conventional numerical data acquisition and control system. TEXSYS test results demonstrate both nominal control and fault recovery actions with the BATBS. Dynamic modification of the symbolic model used in this approach is compared to that of a classical numerical adaptive controller.
