Japanese Magsat Team. A: Crustal structure near Japan and its Antarctic Station. B: Electric currents and hydromagnetic waves in the ionosphere and the magnetosphere

Efforts continue in compiling tapes which contain vector and scalar data decimated at an interval of 0.5 sec, together with time and position data. A map of the total force field anomaly around Japan was developed which shows a negative magnetic anomaly in the Okhotsk Sea. Examination of vector residuals from the MGST model shows that the total force perturbation is almost ascribable to the perturbation parallel to the main geomagnetic field and that the contribution from the perturbation transverse to the main field to the total force perturbation is negligibly small. The influences of ionospheric current with equatorial electroject and of the magnetospheric field aligned current on the dawn-dusk asymmetry of daily geomagnetic variations are being considered. The total amount of electric current flowing through the plane of the Magsat orbit loop was calculated by direct application of Maxwell's equation. Results show that the total electric current is 1 to 5 ampheres, and the current direction is either sunward or antisunward.

Gravity and magnetic anomaly modeling and correlation using the SPHERE program and Magsat data

The spherical Earth inversion, modeling, and contouring software were tested and modified for processing data in the Southern Hemisphere. Preliminary geologic/tectonic maps and selected cross sections for South and Central America and the Caribbean region are being compiled and as well as gravity and magnetic models for the major geological features of the area. A preliminary gravity model of the Andeas Beniff Zone was constructed so that the density columns east and west of the subducted plates are in approximate isostatic equilibrium. The magnetic anomaly for the corresponding magnetic model of the zone is being computed with the SPHERE program. A test tape containing global magnetic measurements was converted to a tape compatible with Purdue's CDC system. NOO data were screened for periods of high diurnal activity and reduced to anomaly form using the IGS-75 model. Magnetic intensity anomaly profiles were plotted on the conterminous U.S. map using the track lines as the anomaly base level. The transcontinental magnetic high seen in POGO and MAGSAT data is also represented in the NOO data.

Improved definition of crustal anomalies for Magsat data

Final editing and reduction of the equatorial ground observatory data set was completed. Plots of delineation, and the vertical and horizontal components of the time varying field were generated from these data. Appropriate baselines were derived and deviations from these levels can be used as a continuous measure of the external variations at ground level in the sub-auroral zones. They may also be useful as quantitative measures of the intensity of external field activity. Other data sets assembled for dissemination include (1) Kp and Ap - the planetary magnetic indexes; (2) the international magnetic character indexes-Cp; (3) compilations of magnetic storm sudden commencements; (4) time of interplanetary magnetic sector changes; and (5) Dst - the storm disturbance measure. Fine attitude component data with its increased pointing resolution is reducing residuals by an order of magnitude.

Aeroacoustics of a porous plug jet noise suppressor

The aeroacoustics of a porous plug jet noise suppressor was investigated. The predicted flow features of isentropic plug nozzles for different pressure ratios or exit flow Mach numbers, throat areas, ratios of the plug to annular nozzle radii, mass flow rates and the available run times possible with the existing compressed air supply system, are compiled. The dimensions and the coordinates of the contour of typical isentropic external expansion plugs with different exit flow Mach numbers are listed. Design details of the experimental facility and the plug nozzle selected for experimental aeroacoustic studies are reported. The analytical flow prediction by method of characteristics of a conical porous plug nozzles is initiated. The role of the shape, size, and porosity of the plug surface in achieving over a perforated conical plug a nearly isentropic shockfree supersonic flow field which is closely similar to the flow field of a contoured isentropic plug nozzle is examined.

Obstacle detectors for automated transit vehicles: A technoeconomic and market analysis

A search was conducted to identify the technical and economic characteristics of both NASA and nonNASA obstacle detectors. The findings, along with market information were compiled and analyzed for consideration by DOT and NASA in decisions about any future automated transit vehicle obstacle detector research, development, or applications project. Currently available obstacle detectors and systems under development are identified by type (sonic, capacitance, infrared/optical, guided radar, and probe contact) and compared with the three NASA devices selected as possible improvements or solutions to the problems in existing obstacle detection systems. Cost analyses and market forecasts individually for the AGT and AMTV markets are included.

Thermal expansion properties of composite materials

Thermal expansion data for several composite materials, including generic epoxy resins, various graphite, boron, and glass fibers, and unidirectional and woven fabric composites in an epoxy matrix, were compiled. A discussion of the design, material, environmental, and fabrication properties affecting thermal expansion behavior is presented. Test methods and their accuracy are discussed. Analytical approaches to predict laminate coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) based on lamination theory and micromechanics are also included. A discussion is included of methods of tuning a laminate to obtain a near-zero CTE for space applications.

Forecast of future aviation fuels: The model

A conceptual models of the commercial air transportation industry is developed which can be used to predict trends in economics, demand, and consumption. The methodology is based on digraph theory, which considers the interaction of variables and propagation of changes. Air transportation economics are treated by examination of major variables, their relationships, historic trends, and calculation of regression coefficients. A description of the modeling technique and a compilation of historic airline industry statistics used to determine interaction coefficients are included. Results of model validations show negligible difference between actual and projected values over the twenty-eight year period of 1959 to 1976. A limited application of the method presents forecasts of air tranportation industry demand, growth, revenue, costs, and fuel consumption to 2020 for two scenarios of future economic growth and energy consumption.

Documentation for the machine-readable character coded version of the SKYMAP catalogue

The SKYMAP catalogue is a compilation of astronomical data prepared primarily for purposes of attitude guidance for satellites. In addition to the SKYMAP Master Catalogue data base, a software package of data base management and utility programs is available. The tape version of the SKYMAP Catalogue, as received by the Astronomical Data Center (ADC), contains logical records consisting of a combination of binary and EBCDIC data. Certain character coded data in each record are redundant in that the same data are present in binary form. In order to facilitate wider use of all SKYMAP data by the astronomical community, a formatted (character) version was prepared by eliminating all redundant character data and converting all binary data to character form. The character version of the catalogue is described. The document is intended to fully describe the formatted tape so that users can process the data problems and guess work; it should be distributed with any character version of the catalogue.

Line parameters of methane from 2385 to 3200/cm

A list of new methane line parameters for the 2385-3200 cm region included in the Air Force Geophysical Laboratory's compilation of molecular line parameters is presented. Line positions were determined by computer computations from Fourier transform spectrometer data using a Kitt Peak subroutine. With the exception of class IV lines, all line strengths were determined by the method of equivalent widths. Additional line strengths were measured from spectra taken at cold sample temperatures so that lower state transition energies could be determined experimentally. Observed line positions and strengths are given for 8076 absorptions with strengths greater than 3.3 x 10 to the -24 cm/molecule.

X-ray structures associated with disappearing H-alpha filaments in active regions

The paper examines the relationship between active region disappearing H-alpha filaments and the associated coronal X-ray structures observed both before the disappearance event and afterwards. The events chosen for the study were selected from a list of active region X-ray transients observed in the images from the X-ray telescope on Skylab and from a list compiled by Webb (1976) of sudden disappearances of filaments during the Skylab period. Results indicate no distinction between the disappearing and the remaining active region filaments in terms of their pre-event associated X-ray emission features. However, X-ray brightenings were associated in a nearly one-to-one correspondence with disappearing portions of the filaments.

Aerodynamic characteristics of a series of airbreathing missile configurations

The results of an experimental program conducted in order to compile a data base useful in the application of airbreathing propulsion to missiles are presented. The configurations investigated used two-dimensional or axisymmetric twin inlets located at three alternative circumferential positions: 90, 115 and 135 deg to the vertical centerline. The effects of a wing located above the inlets and of various tail configurations were investigated, with a view to longitudinal stability/control and lateral-directional stability characteristics. It is noted that of the three tail configurations tested, the 'X' tail showed (1) the most linear pitch-moment curve, (2) control effectiveness, and (3) positive lateral-directional stability.

Ozone air broadening coefficients in the 9-micron region

Air broadening coefficients and line strengths are reported for selected ozone lines in the 8.8 to 10 micron spectral region. These parameters were obtained from a least squares fit of the Voigt line shape to experimental ozone absorption spectra obtained with a tunable diode laser. Analysis of 11 lines in the nu 1 and 18 lines in the nu 3 band suggest a transition dependent coefficient, although no definitive relationship was identified. The average air broadening coefficient for the nu 1 and nu 3 ozone lines is 0.077 and 0.083 per cm/atm, respectively. The measured line strengths are typically 10% to a factor of 2 larger than those given in the AFGL compilation.
