Whole Module Offgas Test Report: Space-X Dragon Module

Between 7 April and 11 April 2012 a chemist from the JSC Toxicology Group acquired samples of air in 500 ml evacuated canisters from the sealed Dragon Module at the Space-X facility at KSC. Three samples were taken of facility air (two before the test and one after the test), and a total of 9 samples were taken from the sealed module in triplicate at the following times: 0 hours, 48 hours, and 96 hours. The module contained 470 kg, which was 100% of the mass to be launched. Analytical data contained in the Toxicology Group Report (attached) show that the ambient facility air was clean except for almost 9 milligrams per cubic meter of isopropanol (IPA) in the sample taken at the end of the test. Space-X must ensure that IPA is not introduced into the module before it is sealed for launch. Other minor contaminants in the ambient air included the following: perfluoro(2-methyl)pentane and hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane. The first-acquired samples of each triplicate from the module were not analyzed. Analyses of pairs of samples that were taken during the test show excellent agreement between the pairs and a linear increase in the T-values during the 4 days of the test (figure below). The rate of increase averaged 0.124 T units per day. If the time from last purge of the module on the ground to crew first entry on orbit is 10 days, then the T value at first entry should be less than 1.2 units, which is well below the criterion of 3.0 for consideration of additional protection of the crew from offgas products. The primary contributors were as follows: trimethylsilanol (0.057), fluorotrimethylsilane (0.047), acetaldehyde (0.004), hexamethylcyclopentasiloxane (0.003), and toluene (0.002).

Conceptual Design of Engineering-Scale Molten Salt Spill Tests to Support Molten Salt Reactor Licensing

Nuclear accident progression analysis codes for reactor licensing must be validated using experimental data that was generated at a large enough scale so that the results are representative of full-scale accidents. This report describes a conceptual design of engineering-scale molten salt spill tests that will provide the necessary datasets to support molten salt reactor (MSR) licensing. Design considerations, salt compositions, test variables, processes to be quantified, and suitable measurement techniques are presented and discussed. Aspects of the conceptual engineering-scale molten salt spill test design presented in this report were made using insights from recent laboratory-scale molten salt spill tests conducted at Argonne. Additional input from model developers, MSR vendors, and technical experts will benefit the design of the proposed engineering-scale molten salt spill tests.

Application of remote sensing techniques to the geology of the bonanza volcanic center

A program is reported for evaluating remote sensing as an aid to geologic mapping for the past four years. Data tested in this evaluation include color and color infrared photography, multiband photography, low sun-angle photography, thermal infrared scanner imagery, and side-looking airborne radar. The relative utility of color and color infrared photography was tested as it was used to refine geologic maps in previously mapped areas, as field photos while mapping in the field, and in making photogeologic maps prior to field mapping. The latter technique served as a test of the maximum utility of the photography. In this application the photography was used successfully to locate 75% of all faults in a portion of the geologically complex Bonanza volcanic center and to map and correctly identify 93% of all Quaternary deposits and 62% of all areas of Tertiary volcanic outcrop in the area.

Conduct overall test operations and evaluate two Doppler systems to detect, track and measure velocities in aircraft wake vortices

A program plan for system evaluation of the two-dimensional Scanning Laser Doppler System (SLDS) is presented. In order to meet system evaluation and optimization objectives the following tests were conducted: (1) noise tests; (2) wind tests; (3) blower flowfield tests; (4) single unit (1-D) flyby tests; and (5) dual unit (2-D) flyby tests. Test results are reported. The final phase of the program included logistics preparation, equipment interface checkouts, and data processing. It is concluded that the SLDS is capable of accurately tracking aircraft wake vortices from small or large aircraft, and in any type of weather.

Preliminary results of the US-USSR meteorological rocketsonde intercomparison held at Wallops Island, VA - August 1977

The reported intercomparison tests were conducted in connection with the objective to make U.S. and USSR rocketsonde temperature data, obtained in studies of the stratosphere and lower mesosphere, compatible with each other. The tests were successful. In general, temperature and wind profiles from the M100B and Datasonde instruments exhibited many similarities up to the vicinity of the stratopause. Mean temperature differences for the day and night pairs are less than 5 C up to 50 km. The differences progressively increase to about 14-15 C at 70 km, with the M100B temperatures colder than the Datasonde data. The reasonably close similarity between the day and night temperature differences suggests that consistent radiation corrections are being applied to both systems. The agreement of the wind measurements below 58 km is a significant improvement compared to the 1973 comparisons when agreement only extended up to 45 km.
