Cryogenic growth of aluminum: Structural morphology, optical properties, superconductivity, and microwave dielectric loss

We explore the molecular beam epitaxy synthesis of superconducting aluminum thin films grown on c-plane sapphire substrates at cryogenic temperatures of 6 K and compare their behavior with films synthesized at room temperature. We demonstrate that cryogenic growth increases structural disorder, producing crystalline grains that modify the optical, electrical, and superconducting properties of aluminum. We observe that cryogenic deposition changes the color of aluminum from fully reflective to yellow and correlate the pseudodielectric function and reflectance with structural changes in the film. We find that smaller grain sizes enhance the superconductivity of aluminum, increasing its critical temperature and critical field. We then estimate the superconducting gap and coherence length of Cooper pairs in aluminum in the presence of disorder. In conclusion, we fabricate superconducting microwave resonators on these films and find that, independently of the growth temperature, the system is dominated by two-level system loss with similar quality factors in the high- and low-power regimes. We further measure a higher kinetic inductance in the cryogenically grown films.

Two Polymorphs of BaZn 2 P 2 : Crystal Structures, Phase Transition, and Transport Properties

Here, the novel α-BaZn 2 P 2 structural polymorph has been synthesized and structurally characterized for the first time. Its structure, elu-cidated from single crystal X-ray diffraction, indicates that the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic α-BaCu 2 S 2 structure type, with unit cell parameters a = 9.7567(14) Å, b = 4.1266(6) Å, and c = 10.6000(15) Å. With β-BaZn 2 P 2 being previously iden-tified as belonging to the ThCr 2 Si 2 family, and with the precedent of structural phase transitions between the α-BaCu 2 S 2 type and the ThCr 2 Si 2 type, the potential for the pattern to be extended to the two different structural forms of BaZn 2 P 2 was explored. Thermal analysis suggest that a first order phase transition occurs at ~1123 K, whereby the low-temperature orthorhombic α-phase transforms to a high-temperature tetragonal β-BaZn 2 P 2 ; the structure of which was also studied and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Preliminary transport properties and band structure calculations indicate that α-BaZn 2 P 2 is a p-type, narrow-gap semiconductor with a direct bandgap (Eg) of 0.5 eV. The Seebeck coefficient, S(T), for the material increases steadily from the room temperature value of 119 µV/K to 184 µV/K at 600 K. The electrical resistivity of α-BaZn 2 P 2 is relatively high, on the order of 40 mΩ·cm, and the ρ(T) dependence shows gradual decrease upon heating. Such behavior is comparable to those of the typical semimetals or degenerate semiconductors. Although the observed values of the as-synthesized samples are not optimal, the carrier concentration can apparently be tuned to fall between the values of metals and semiconductors, thus providing an open window for optimizing this phase towards achieving an enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit zT. The calculated indirect band gap for the β-BaZn 2 P 2 phase is Eg = 0.03 eV which is about an order of magnitude lower than that of α-BaZn 2 P 2 . It is expected that the cage-like structural motif and layered structure possessed by α-BaZn 2 P 2 and β-BaZn 2 P 2 phases, respectively, would promote the realiza-tion of a low thermal conductivity in both compounds.

Structural and mechanical properties of monolayer amorphous carbon and boron nitride

Amorphous materials exhibit various characteristics that are not featured by crystals and can sometimes be tuned by their degree of disorder (DOD). Here, we report results on the mechanical properties of monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) and monolayer amorphous boron nitride (maBN) with different DOD. The pertinent structures are obtained by kinetic-Monte-Carlo (kMC) simulations using machine-learning potentials (MLP) with density-functional-theory (DFT)-level accuracy. An intuitive order parameter, namely the areal fraction F x occupied by crystallites within the continuous random network, is proposed to describe the DOD. We find that F x captures the essence of the DOD: Samples with the same F x but different sizes and arrangements of crystallites, obtained using two distinct kMC procedures, have virtually identical radial distributions functions as well as bond-length and bond-angle distributions. Furthermore, by simulating the fracture process with molecular dynamics, we found that the mechanical responses of MAC and maBN before fracture are mainly determined by F x and are insensitive to the sizes and specific arrangements and to some extent the numbers and area distributions of the crystallites. The behavior of cracks in the two materials is analyzed and found to mainly propagate in meandering paths in the CRN region and to be influenced by crystallites in distinct ways that toughen the material. Furthermore, the present results reveal the relation between structure and mechanical properties in amorphous monolayers and may provide a universal toughening strategy for 2D materials.

Studies on the compositional dependent structural and electrical properties of CaTiO3-modified K0.5Na0.5NbO3 piezoelectric system

Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics of (1 − x)K0.5Na0.5NbO3-xCaTiO3 were fabricated, and their crystal structure, microstructure, and electrical properties were systematically studied. Rietveld refinement of the x-ray diffraction data and Raman spectroscopic analyses revealed a composition-dependent structural phase transition: three phase transitions, namely, from a pure orthorhombic phase for x ≤ 0.02 to a mixed phase of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases (0.03 ≤ x ≤ 0.08) and finally another mixed phase of tetragonal + cubic for x = 0.10 and 0.15 at room temperature (RT). The morphological study reveals a decrease in grain size along with a more uniform distribution of grains as the concentration of CaTiO3 (CT) increases; notably, a homogeneous distribution of grains is observed for x = 0.05. The temperature-dependent dielectric properties show two phase transitions, from orthorhombic to tetragonal (TO-T) and tetragonal to cubic (TC), for unmodified K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN). However, both the phase transition temperatures (TO-T and TC) decrease, and the transition peaks broaden with an increase in CT substitution, and for x > 0.06, the TO-T shifted below RT. The broadening of the transition peak at TO-T may be due to the relaxation behavior. Among the prepared samples, the 5 mol. % CT-modified KNN shows the optimum electrical properties (d33 = 114 pC/N, ɛr = 412, and 2Pr = 15.25 μC/cm2) at RT. The enhanced electrical properties for x = 0.05 are due to the coexistence of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases, facilitating easy polarization rotation and flattening of the free energy profile. A phase diagram has been constructed based on the information gathered from the temperature-dependent dielectric measurements, RT x-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy data and is discussed in detail.

Isotope effects in molecular structures and electronic properties of liquid water via deep potential molecular dynamics based on the SCAN functional

Here, Feynman path-integral deep potential molecular dynamics (PI-DPMD) calculations have been employed to study both light (H 2 O) and heavy water (D 2 O) within the isothermalisobaric ensemble. In particular, the deep neural network is trained based on ab initio data obtained from the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) exchange-correlation functional. Because of the lighter mass of hydrogen than deuteron, the properties of light water are more influenced by nuclear quantum effect than those of heavy water. Clear isotope effects are observed and analyzed in terms of hydrogen-bond structure and electronic properties of water that are closely associated with experimental observables. The molecular structures of both liquid H 2 O and D 2 O agree well with the data extracted from scattering experiments. The delicate isotope effects on radial distribution functions and angular distribution functions are well reproduced as well. Our approach demonstrates that deep neural network combined with SCAN functional based ab initio molecular dynamics provides an accurate theoretical tool for modeling water and its isotope effects.

Investigation of porous polydimethylsiloxane structures with tunable properties induced by the phase separation technique

This article reports the fabrication and characterization of porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) structures developed by the solvent evaporationinduced phase separation technique. Here, ternary systems containing water/ tetrahydrofuran (THF)/PDMS with various concentrations are produced to form a stable solution. The porous PDMS structures are formed by removing the solvent (THF) and nonsolvent (water) phases during the stepping heat treatment procedure. The analytical ternary phase diagram is constructed based on the thermodynamic equilibrium state in the polymer solution to explain the stable/unstable formulations and the possible composition change path. The results show that the isolated pores with the adjustable pore size ranging from 330 to 1900 μm are obtained by tuning the water to the THF ratio. The mechanical properties of the porous PDMS structures are determined by conducting the tensile tests on the prepared dog bone-shaped specimens. A wide range of elastic modulus ranging between 0.49 and 1.05 MPa was achieved without affecting the density of the porous sample by adjusting the solvent and non-solvent content in the solution. It is shown that the flexibility of the porous structures can be improved by reducing the ratio of water to THF and decreasing the PDMS content. The porosity measurements reveal that the PDMS concentration is the major phase controlling the porosity of the structure, while the effect of water/THF is negligible.

Effects of Al:Si and (Al+Na):Si Ratios on the Properties of the International Simple Glass, Part II: Structure

High-alumina containing high-level waste (HLW) will be vitrified at the Waste Treatment Plant at the Hanford Site. The resulting glasses, high in alumina, will have distinct composition-structure-property (C-S-P) relationships compared to previously studied HLW glasses. These C-S-P relationships determine the processability and product durability of glasses and therefore must be understood. The main purpose of this study is to understand the detailed structural changes caused by Al:Si and (Al+Na):Si substitutions in a simplified nuclear waste model glass (ISG, International Simple Glass) by combining experimental structural characterizations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The structures of these two series of glasses were characterized by neutron total scattering and 27Al, 23Na, 29Si, and 11B solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Additionally, MD simulations were used to generate atomistic structural models of the borosilicate glasses and simulation results were validated by the experimental structural data. Short-range (e.g., bond distance, coordination number, etc.) and medium-range (e.g., oxygen speciation, network connectivity, polyhedral linkages) structural features of the borosilicate glasses were systematically investigated as a function of the degree of substitution. The results show that bond distance and coordination number of the cation-oxygen pairs are relatively insensitive to Al:Si and (Al+Na):Si substitutions with the exception of the B-O pair. Additionally, the Al:Si substitution results in an increase of tri-bridging oxygen species, while (Al+Na):Si substitution creates non-bridging oxygen species. Charge compensator preferences were found for Si-[NBO] (Na+), [3]B-[NBO] (Na+), [4]B (mostly Ca2+), [4]Al (nearly equally split Na+ and Ca2+), and [6]Zr (mostly Ca2+). The network former-BO-network former linkages preferences were also tabulated; Si-O-Al and Al-O-Al were preferred at the expense of lower Si-O-[3]B and [3]B-O-[3]B linkages. These results provide insights on the structural origins of property changes such as glass transition temperature caused by the substitutions, providing a basis for future improvements of theoretical and computer simulation models.

Structural and optical properties of cubic GaN on U-grooved Si (100)

Cubic GaN epitaxy on large-area U-grooved silicon (100) dies is demonstrated by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, and its structural and optical properties are reported. Scanning electron, atomic force, and transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that cubic GaN shows no discernible threading dislocations and a low stacking fault density of 3.27 ± 0.18 × 10 4 cm –1 . Temperature-dependent photoluminescence studies reveal as-grown cubic GaN band edge emission internal quantum efficiency as 25.6% ± 0.9%. Selective etching of the low-temperature AlN buffer layer, SiO 2 sidewalls, and hexagonal-phase GaN is demonstrated, which increases the cubic GaN band edge emission internal quantum efficiency to 31.6% ± 0.8%. This increase is attributed to the decrease in the radiative recombination lifetime via the removal of defective hexagonal-phase GaN. Altogether, cubic GaN on U-grooved silicon with high structural and optical quality is reported, promising its suitability for next-generation devices.

Crystal structure and luminescence properties of lead-free metal halides (C 6 H 5 CH 2 NH 3 ) 3 MBr 6 (M = Bi and Sb)

Organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides have received extensive attention owing to their versatile structures and optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report two lead-free metal halides, (PMA) 3 BiBr 6 and (PMA) 3 SbBr 6 [PMA + : (C 6 H 5 CH 2 NH 3 ) + , as the abbreviation of phenylmethylammonium], which possess iso-structural zero-dimensional structures and crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /c. (PMA) 3 BiBr 6 and (PMA) 3 SbBr 6 exhibit optical band gaps of ~3.50 and 3.40 eV, respectively, and density functional theory calculations reveal their indirect bandgap behaviors. Upon 350 and 425 nm excitation, (PMA) 3 BiBr 6 and (PMA) 3 SbBr 6 exhibit broadband emission peaking at 510 nm and 625 nm with wide full-widths at half-maximum of ~153 and 175 nm, respectively. The emission mechanism of the metal halides is attributed to self-trapped exciton emission. The relationship between the crystal structure and luminescence intensity is also discussed. Lastly, both metal halides have high decomposition temperatures and are stable for long-term storage under ambient conditions, demonstrating their potential for optoelectronic applications.

Structural and Biophysical Properties of a [4Fe-4S] Ferredoxin-Like Protein from Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 with a Unique Two Domain Structure

Electron carrier proteins (ECPs), binding iron-sulfur clusters, are vital components within the intricate network of metabolic and photosynthetic reactions. They play a crucial role in the distribution of reducing equivalents. In Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, the ECP network includes at least nine ferredoxins. Previous research, including global expression analyses and protein binding studies, has offered initial insights into the functional roles of individual ferredoxins within this network. This study primarily focuses on Ferredoxin 9 (slr2059). Through sequence analysis and computational modeling, Ferredoxin 9 emerges as a unique ECP with a distinctive two-domain architecture. It consists of a C-terminal iron-sulfur binding domain and an N-terminal domain with homology to Nil-domain proteins, connected by a structurally rigid 4-amino acid linker. Notably, in contrast to canonical [2Fe-2S] ferredoxins exemplified by PetF (ssl0020), which feature highly acidic surfaces facilitating electron transfer with photosystem I reaction centers, models of Ferredoxin 9 reveal a more neutral to basic protein surface. Using a combination of electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and square-wave voltammetry on heterologously produced Ferredoxin 9, this study demonstrates that the protein coordinates 2x[4Fe-4S]2+/1+ redox-active and magnetically interacting clusters, with measured redox potentials of -420 +/- 9 mV and -516 +/- 10 mV vs SHE. A more in-depth analysis of Fdx9's unique structure and protein sequence suggests that this type of Nil-2[4Fe-4S] multi-domain ferredoxin is well conserved in cyanobacteria, bearing structural similarities to proteins involved in homocysteine synthesis in methanogens.

Humidity Disrupts Structural and Chiroptical Properties of Chiral 2D Perovskites

Chiral two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic–inorganic metal halide perovskite semiconductors have emerged as an exceptional material platform with many design opportunities for spintronic applications. However, a comprehensive understanding of changes to the crystal structure and chiroptical properties upon exposure to atmospheric humidity has not been established. We demonstrate phase degradation to the 1D (MBA)PbI 3 (MBA = methylbenzylammonium) and the hypothetical (MBA) 3 PbI 5 ·H 2 O hydrate phases, accompanied by a reduction and disappearance of the chiroptical response. Firstprinciple simulations show that water molecules preferentially locate at the interface between the organic cations and the inorganic framework, thereby disrupting the hydrogen bonding, impacting both the structural chirality and stability of the material. These findings provide critical insights into phase degradation mechanisms and their impact on chiroptical activity in chiral 2D perovskites.

Effect of XC functionals and dispersion corrections on the DFT‐computed structural and vibrational properties of SrCl 2 –NaCl and ZrF 4 –LiF

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to examine the impact of exchange–correlation (XC) functionals and van der Waals corrections (specifically the D3 method) on the structural and vibrational properties of the SrCl 2 –NaCl and ZrF 4 –LiF salt systems. Multiple XC functionals, including the local density approximation (LDA), the generalized gradient approximation using the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) model, and its modified form suitable for solids (PBEsol), the dispersion-corrected PBE-D3 and PBEsol-D3, were considered. Of these functionals, LDA was found to exhibit the highest degree of error, while PBEsol and PBE-D3 displayed the least error. Underestimated lattice parameters compared with experimental values were observed to result in higher force constants, leading to an overprediction of vibrational frequencies. Conversely, an overestimation of lattice parameters was associated with lower vibrational frequencies. The methodology presented in this study yielded results that are in good agreement with experiment, irrespective of the method (finite differences vs. density functional perturbation theory) employed for calculating infrared and Raman spectra. It was further demonstrated that for alkali halides with weak Raman scattering, utilizing a supercell constructed from primitive cells better predicts Raman features than does the use of conventional cells.

Relationship of the Molecular Structure and Transport Properties of Imide-Based Lithium Salts of “Acetonitrile/Water-in-Salt” Electrolytes

“Water-in-salt” (WIS) electrolytes exhibit excellent safety and electrochemical performance. However, they possess high concentrations, relatively low diffusion coefficient, and high viscosity. “Acetonitrile/water in salt” (AWIS) electrolytes can overcome the disadvantages of WIS electrolytes. Under relatively low concentrations, AWIS electrolytes show good electrochemical performance comparable to WIS electrolytes and low conductivity. Herein, we investigate the relationship between the solvation structures and the transport properties using small-angle X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulation. We observed two solvation behaviors of AWIS: anions dissolved in acetonitrile forming small acetonitrile/anion clusters and additional water further dissolving the small acetonitrile/anion clusters. The introduction of acetonitrile weakens the water–solute interaction and enhances the cation–anion interaction, which results in an enhanced dynamical slowdown as the concentration increases. In conclusion, this work provides molecular-level understanding of the connection between two-stage solvation structures and transport properties for imide-based lithium salt solutions.

Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structures, Nonlinear Optical Properties, and Magnetic Properties of Two Thiophosphates: KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7

Two thiophosphates, KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7 , were structurally characterized without investigating any optical properties. Herein in this work, KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7 were revisited to investigate their optical and magnetic properties, respectively. Pure polycrystalline samples and crystals of KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7 were grown by high temperature solid state reactions, where mm-sized crystals of KCrP 2 S 7 were collected. KCrP 2 S 7 is isostructural to KInP 2 S 7 , which features a layered structure. KInP 2 S 7 and KCrP 2 S 7 possess close relationship to the layered thiophosphate M 2 P 2 S 6 (M = Fe, Co, Zn, etc.). The bonding pictures of KInP 2 S 7 were studied using the electron localization function (ELF) coupled with crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) calculations. The intrinsically distorted [PS 4 ] tetrahedra and [InS 6 ] octahedra are made by strong covalent P-S interactions and ionic In-S interactions, respectively. Electronic structure analysis confirmed that the optical properties of KInP 2 S 7 are mainly contributed to by [PS 4 ] tetrahedra together with small amounts of the contributions coming from [InS 6 ] octahedra. Magnetic measurement on mm-sized crystals of KCrP 2 S 7 verified that there is an antiferromagnetic transition around 21 K, and the Cr atoms are trivalent. KInP 2 S 7 is predicated to be an indirect bandgap semiconductor of 2.38 eV, which is confirmed by the UV-Vis measurement of 2.4(1) eV. KInP 2 S 7 is not a type-I phase-matching material and exhibits moderate second harmonic generation (SHG) response (0.51 × AgGaS 2 , sample of particle size of 100 µm). The laser damage threshold (LDT) of KInP 2 S 7 is very high of 5.2 × AgGaS 2 . Bandgap engineering were undergone to enhance the SHG response of KInP 2 S 7 .

Optical, structural and aging properties of Al/Sc-based multilayers for the extreme ultraviolet

This manuscript presents the structural characterization of Al/Sc-based periodic multilayer coatings for the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range. Based on transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction as well as grazing-incidence and large-angle x-ray diffraction, a model for the layer structure and the interfacial effects of Al/Sc coatings is built. The onset of crystallization in nanoscale Al and Sc layers as a function of thickness is also revealed in these characterizations. The Al/Sc layer model is validated and further refined by fitting in-band and out-of-band EUV reflectance measurements across 5 orders of magnitude in an extended wavelength range from 17 to 80 nm. Here, the same type of EUV reflectance measurements is used to test the Al/Sc aging properties and to demonstrate the spectral response of optimized two- and tri-material multilayers including Al/Sc, Al/Sc/SiC and Mo/Al/Sc.

Electrochemical Control of the Morphology and Functional Properties of Hierarchically Structured, Dendritic Cu Surfaces

Electrodeposited dendritic copper foams have been extensively studied as an electrocatalyst for CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Many parameters, such as dendrite size, porosity, pore size, and crystal faceting, define the hierarchical properties of these structures and their subsequent bubble evolution and CO 2 RR capabilities. Herein, the effects the electrodeposition conditions (potential, pH) have on the resulting crystallinity, microstructure, and macroporosity of the copper foam are studied. These morphological differences and the corresponding effects on electrocatalytic activity are characterized. It is shown that the composition of the electrodeposition bath can have significant effects on the mechanics of bubble formation and detachment at the surface during hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic solutions. Similarly, the electrodeposition conditions for the synthesis of the foam affect the product selectivity during CO 2 RR electrocatalysis. As a result, foams deposited in alkaline electrodeposition solutions show high faradaic efficiency and specificity toward C 2 H 6 , an uncommon product of CO 2 RR, at modest applied potentials (−0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode.

Structural and Optical Properties of High Entropy (La,Lu,Y,Gd,Ce)AlO 3 Perovskite Thin Films

Mixtures of Ce-doped rare-earth aluminum perovskites are drawing a significant amount of attention as potential scintillating devices. However, the synthesis of complex perovskite systems leads to many challenges. Designing the A-site cations with an equiatomic ratio allows for the stabilization of a single-crystal phase driven by an entropic regime. This work describes the synthesis of a highly epitaxial thin film of configurationally disordered rare-earth aluminum perovskite oxide (La 0.2 Lu 0.2 Y 0.2 Gd 0.2 Ce 0.2 )AlO 3 and characterizes the structural and optical properties. The thin films exhibit three equivalent epitaxial domains having an orthorhombic structure resulting from monoclinic distortion of the perovskite cubic cell. An excitation of 286.5 nm from Gd 3+ and energy transfer to Ce 3+ with 405 nm emission are observed, which represents the potential for high-energy conversion. These experimental results also offer the pathway to tunable optical properties of high-entropy rare-earth epitaxial perovskite films for a range of applications.

Synthesis, structural, and magnetic properties of Heusler-type Mn 2-x Fe 1+x Ge (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) alloys

Bulk Mn 2-x Fe 1+x Ge (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) alloys have been synthesized by arc-melting followed by a low temperature homogenization thermal annealing, whereas for comparison purposes the Mn 2 FeGe alloy was also produced in ribbon form by rapid solidification.
