Experimental Characterization of Non-Associative Plasticity Flow Rule Coefficients and Post-Peak Stress Degradation for the LS-DYNA MAT213 Model

This project is focused on developing an experimental framework for characterizing non-associative plasticity flow rule coefficients through coupon-scale tests for the LS-DYNA MAT213 model. The main objective is to characterize these coefficients based on the multi-scale (i.e., both microscopic and macroscopic) full-field measurement of the evolution of strain and stress fields. This paper focuses on presenting the experimental work on characterizing the full-scale stress-strain curves of T700/LM-PAEK composites under tension, compression, and shear loads. The experimental data set was intended to build a deformation sub-model in the MAT213 model for the material. The strain data were collected using both microscopic and macroscopic digital image correlation techniques. The microscopic technique was particularly useful for fracture cases under small strains. A preliminary simulation result obtained from the MAT213 model is also presented in the paper. The experimental framework herein will be extended to characterize post-peak stress degradation in the composite material and to develop a damage sub-model for the material. This project will contribute to developing a simulation tool based on the MAT213 model for simulating the rate-dependent impact damage in composites under multi-axial loading.

Combined Beam-column Stresses of Aluminum-alloy Channel Sections

The results of a research program to obtain design data on the strength of open-channel aluminum-alloy sections subjected to combined column and beam action. The results of the tests of about 70 specimens were graphed for stresses due to axial load and stresses due to bending loading as functions of length to radius of gyration of the specimens. From these graphs a design chart was derived that is suitable for ready use.

Secondary Stresses in Open Box Beams Subjected to Torsion

In open box beams subjected to torsion, secondary stresses arise owing to lateral bending of the spar caps. The present paper outlines a simple method for estimating the magnitude of these stresses and gives the results of tests of an open box beam in the neighborhood of a discontinuity where the cover changed from the top to the bottom of the box.

Axial Fatigue Tests at Zero Mean Stress of 24S-T and 75S-T Aluminum-alloy Strips with a Central Circular Hole

Axial fatigue tests at zero mean stress have been made on 0.032- and 0.064-inch 24S-T and 0.032-inch 75S-T sheet-metal specimens 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2 inches wide without a hole and with central holes giving a range of hole diameter D to specimen width W from 0.01 to 0.95. No systematic difference was noted between the results for the 0.032-inch and the 0.064-inch specimens although the latter seemed the more consistent. In general the fatigue strength based on the minimum section dropped sharply as the ration D/W was increased from zero to about 0.25. The plain specimens showed quite a pronounced decrease in fatigue strength with increasing width. The holed specimens showed only slight and rather inconclusive evidence of this size effect. The fatigue stress-concentration factor was higher for 75S-T than for 24S-T alloy. Evidence was found that a very small hole would not cause any reduction in fatigue strength.

The Combinations of Thermal and Load Stresses for the Onset of Permanent Buckling in Plates

A simple and practical method for evaluating the onset of permanent buckling in plates in the presence of combined thermal and compressive load stresses is outlined. A particular application of the method shows reasonable agreement with tests of 17-7 PH stainless-steel square tubes. The results indicate that the compressive load stress which the plate can support at the onset of permanent buckling is substantially reduced as the temperature difference of the plate and adjoining members increases.

Stress-life relation of the rolling-contact fatigue spin rig

The rolling-contact fatigue spin rig was used to test groups of SAE 52100 9.16-inch-diameter balls lubricated with a mineral oil at 600,000-, 675,000-, and 750,000-psi maximum Hertz stress. Cylinders of AISI M-1 vacuum and commercial melts and MV-1 (AISI M-50) were used as race specimens. Stress-life exponents produced agree closely with values accepted in industry. The type of failure obtained in the spin rig was similar to the subsurface fatigue spells found in bearings.
