Emphanitic anharmonicity in PbSe at high temperature and anomalous electronic properties in the Pb Q ( Q = S , Se , Te ) system

Here, the temperature dependence of the local structure of PbSe has been investigated using pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of x-ray and neutron powder diffraction data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Observation of non-Gaussian PDF peaks at high temperature indicates the presence of significant anharmonicity, which can be modeled as Pb off-centering along [100] directions that grows on warming similar to the behavior seen in PbTe and PbS and sometimes called emphanisis. Interestingly, the emphanitic response is smaller in PbSe than in both PbS and PbTe indicating a nonmonotonic response with chalcogen atomic number in the PbQ (Q = S, Se, Te) series. The DFT calculations indicate a correlation between band gap and the amplitude of [100] dipolar distortion, suggesting that emphanisis may be behind the anomalous composition and temperature dependencies of the band gaps in this series.

Magnetization Process of Atacamite: A Case of Weakly Coupled S = 1/2 Sawtooth Chains

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the mineral atacamite Cu 2 Cl(OH) 3 . Density-functional theory yields a Hamiltonian describing anisotropic sawtooth chains with weak 3D connections. Experimentally, we fully characterize the antiferromagnetically ordered state. Here, magnetic order shows a complex evolution with the magnetic field, while, starting at 31.5 T, we observe a plateaulike magnetization at about M sat /2. Based on complementary theoretical approaches, we show that the latter is unrelated to the known magnetization plateau of a sawtooth chain. Instead, we provide evidence that the magnetization process in atacamite is a field-driven canting of a 3D network of weakly coupled sawtooth chains that form giant moments.

Geometric Frustration on the Trillium Lattice in a Magnetic Metal-Organic Framework

In the dense metal-organic framework Na [ Mn ( HCOO ) 3 ] , Mn 2 + ions ( S = 5 2 ) occupy the nodes of a “trillium” net. In this work, we show that the system is strongly magnetically frustrated: the Néel transition is suppressed well below the characteristic magnetic interaction strength; short-range magnetic order persists far above the Néel temperature; and the magnetic susceptibility exhibits a pseudo-plateau at 1 3 -saturation magnetization. A simple model of nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnetic and dipolar interactions accounts quantitatively for all observations, including an unusual 2- k magnetic ground state. We show that the relative strength of dipolar interactions is crucial to selecting this particular ground state. Geometric frustration within the classical spin liquid regime gives rise to a large magnetocaloric response at low applied fields that is degraded in powder samples as a consequence of the anisotropy of dipolar interactions.

Electron Glass Phase with Resilient Zhang-Rice Singlets in LiCu 3 ⁢O 3

LiCu 3 ⁢O 3 is an antiferromagnetic mixed valence cuprate where trilayers of edge-sharing Cu(II)O (3⁢d 9 ) are sandwiched in between planes of Cu(I) (3⁢d 10 ) ions, with Li stochastically substituting Cu(II). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory reveal two insulating electronic subsystems that are segregated in spite of sharing common oxygen atoms: a Cu d z 2 /O p z derived valence band (VB) dispersing on the Cu(I) plane, and a Cu 3⁢d x 2 -y 2 /O 2⁢p x,y derived Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) band dispersing on the Cu(II)O planes. First-principle analysis shows the Li substitution to stabilize the insulating ground state, but only if antiferromagnetic correlations are present. Li further induces substitutional disorder and a 2D electron glass behavior in charge transport, reflected in a large 530 meV Coulomb gap and a linear suppression of VB spectral weight at E F that is observed by ARPES. Surprisingly, the disorder leaves the Cu(II)-derived ZRS largely unaffected. Finally, this indicates a local segregation of Li and Cu atoms onto the two separate corner-sharing Cu⁡(II)⁢O 2 sub-lattices of the edge-sharing Cu(II)O planes, and highlights the ubiquitous resilience of the entangled two hole ZRS entity against impurity scattering.

High-pressure phase of CrS b 2 : A new quasi-one-dimensional itinerant magnet with competing interactions

We have synthesized the high-pressure form of CrSb 2 with CuAl 2 -type structure under 7 GPa and 700 °C, and characterized its structural, transport, and magnetic properties by a suite of measurement techniques over a broad range of temperature, magnetic field, and pressure. In addition to previously reported ferromagnetic (FM) transition at T C ≈160 K, we determine another antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (SDW) transition at T s ≈90 K, which is characterized by FM sheets of spins in the ab plane that vary along the c axis as determined by neutron powered diffraction. Pronounced anomalies around these two magnetic transitions are visible only in the lattice parameter c, signaling a strong spin-lattice coupling along the -Cr-Cr-Cr- infinite linear chain. We infer that the application of magnetic field can suppress the SDW phase and stabilize the FM state down to the lowest temperature above μ 0 H c ≈3 T, around which a peculiar non-Fermi-liquid behavior with reduced effective mass emerges. However, the application of high pressure induces complex evolution of the magnetic states, i.e., the FM order is lowered while the SDW order is enhanced quickly until they merge together into a single antiferromagnetic transition, which is suppressed completely at P c ≈9 GPa. We observe near Pc non-Fermi-liquid behavior and enhancement of effective mass, which indicates the possible occurrence of magnetic quantum critical point. No superconductivity was observed down to 2 K around Pc.

Steplike metamagnetic transitions in a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9

Single crystals of a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet, Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9 , were synthesized, and the physical properties have been studied. From magnetometry, a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at ≈12.5 K with highly anisotropic magnetic behavior was found. Neutron powder diffraction confirms that the Tb spins lie along the a-axis, parallel to the shortest Tb-Tb contact. Two field-induced spin-flip transitions are observed when the field is applied parallel to this axis, separated by a plateau corresponding roughly to M ≈ M s /2. Transport measurements show the resistivity to be metallic with a discontinuity at the onset of Néel order. Heat capacity shows a λ-like transition confirming the bulk nature of the magnetism. We propose a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian that describes the magnetization plateau as a result of strong Ising character arising from a quasidoublet ground state of the Tb 3+ ion in a site of C s symmetry and expressing a significant bond-dependent anisotropy.

Complex magnetic properties in the mixed 4 f - 5 d double perovskite iridates X 2 ZnIrO 6 ( X = Nd , Sm , Eu , Gd )

Here in this paper, we report on the synthesis and magnetic properties of a series of double perovskites Ln 2 ZnIrO 6 with Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd. These compounds present examples of the rare case of double perovskites (general formula A 2 BB'O6) with a magnetic 4ƒ-ion on the A site in combination with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d transition-metal ion Ir 4+ on the B sublattice. We discuss the impact of different rare earths on the macroscopic magnetic properties. Gd 2 ZnIrO 6 and Eu 2 ZnIrO 6 show ferrimagnetic or canted antiferromagnetic order below T N = 23 and 12 K, respectively. Sm 2 ZnIrO 6 orders antiferromagnetically at T N = 13 K. Nd 2 ZnIrO 6 exhibits more complex magnetic properties with a strong field dependence ranging from a two-step spin reorientation at μ 0 H = 0.01 T to an antiferromagnetic ground state at intermediate external fields to a spin-flop phase for 0H ≥ 4 T. This unique behavior suggests an interesting interplay between Nd 3+ and Ir 4+ . To further shed light on the relevant magnetic interaction, the zero-field magnetic ground state of Nd 2 ZnIrO 6 is examined via neutron powder diffraction. In general, the magnetic properties of Ln 2 ZnIrO 6 hint towards a substantial contribution of the rare-earth ions and a significant correlation between 5d and 4ƒ magnetism.

Competing magnetic states in multiferroic BaYFeO 4 : A high magnetic field study

Spin-driven ferroelectricity phenomena have drawn great interest in the scientific community due to potential application in spintronics and their complex physical mechanisms. A noticeable example of this is multiferroic BaYFeO 4 that exhibits an unconventional magnetoelectric (ME) coupling due to the uncorrelated behavior of the ferroelectric and cycloidal states under an applied magnetic field. To shed more light on this spin-driven ME effect, a high-quality sample of BaYFeO 4 was synthesized by a standard solid-state reaction method, and its high-field (up to 9 T) magnetic properties have been systematically investigated by means of magnetometry, magnetocaloric effect, and Mössbauer measurements over a wide temperature range (5–400 K). In addition, its crystal and magnetic structures have been studied using x-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Results obtained in this work indicate that Fe spins form a long-range spin density wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at $T_{\text{N1}}$ ~ 50K, which transforms into the cycloidal AFM order at $T_{\text{N2}}$ ~ 35K. A spin-glass-like state emerges below $T^\ast$ ~ 17K, and coexists with the long-range cycloidal AFM one in this temperature range. Magnetocaloric and Mössbauer measurements consistently confirm the robustness of both the long-range SDWand cycloidal AFM orders under applied magnetic fields up to 6 T, whereas the spin-glass state is converted into the ferromagnetic (FM) state when the applied magnetic field exceeds 1 T. These findings pinpoint the fact that the magnetic field evolution of spin correlations from the AFM to FM character in the spin-glass state is responsible for the magnetic field dependence of ferroelectricity in BaYFeO 4 .

Helical versus collinear antiferromagnetic order tuned by magnetic anisotropy in polar and chiral (Ni,Mn) 3 TeO 6

In this work, polar and chiral Ni 3 TeO 6 was found to exhibit a colossal magnetoelectric (ME) effect associated with collinear antiferromagnetic order. We have investigated the evolution of its magnetic state with the substitution of the Ni 2+ spins by isotropic Mn 2+ spins, namely (Ni, Mn) 3 TeO 6 (NMTO). The ground state of NMTO maintains an Ising nature, but a new phase with XY-type magnetic anisotropy is discovered at an intermediate temperature range. Neutron powder diffraction experiments reveal that (1) Mn ions tend to occupy a specific transition-metal site, consistent with the first-principle calculation, and (2) the intermediate phase is an incommensurate (IC) helical magnetic state propagating along the $\textit{c}$ axis with $\vec q_{\text{IC}}$ = (0, 0, 1.5 ± δ). We also found that the balance between these two magnetic states can be readily manipulated with magnetic fields, which results in significant ME effects. This selective site occupancy of NMTO allows for a unique competition between collinear and helical magnetic structures with minimal chemical disorder. Thus, NMTO serves as a model system to study site-specific chemical control of noncollinear magnetism and ME coupling.

Exploring the impact of Cr-doping on the crystallographic and magnetic structure of Mn 5 Si 3 antiferromagnetic alloy

Here, the role of Cr-doping on the structural and magnetic ground states of Mn 5 Si 3 alloy has been investigated through temperature-dependent neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) techniques. All the Cr-doped alloys of nominal composition Mn 5-x Cr x Si 3 (for x = 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2) undergo two first-order magneto-structural phase transitions from hexagonal (space group: P6 3 /mcm) paramagnetic → orthorhombic (space group: Ccmm) collinear antiferromagnetic → orthorhombic (space group: Cc2m) non-collinear antiferromagnetic phase on cooling from room temperature. NPD studies at different constant temperatures indicate that both anti ferromagnetic phases are commensurate in nature and can be represented by q = (0,1,0) magnetic propagation vector for all the Cr-doped alloys. Such doping at the Mn-site results in a significant modification of the non-collinear antiferromagnetic structure (both moment size and orientation) and hence affects the unusual magnetic properties, like inverted hysteresis loop, thermomagnetic irreversibility, etc. The XAFS measurements were performed to interpret the local environment of doped Cr atoms in detail, which is critical for a microscopic understanding of the unusual properties of this class of Cr-doped Mn 5 Si 3 alloys. The analysis confirms the elemental state of Cr in the doped alloys and indicates a high degree of preservation of local crystallographic structure with varying Cr concentration and sample temperature. Doping induces intriguing changes in XAFS patterns, elucidated through different types of scattering mechanisms associated with the central absorbing Cr atom.

Cleavable quaternary oxychlorides with high magnetic ordering temperatures

Quaternary oxychlorides derived from Ruddlesden–Popper 3d transition metal oxides offer a route to cleavable crystals with bulk antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures reaching at least 550 K. Here, we study the magnetic, optical, and mechanical behavior of Sr 2 FeO 3 Cl, Ca 2 FeO 3 Cl, Ca 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 , and Sr 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 . Through optical absorption measurements, we show that these antiferromagnetic semiconductors have optical band gaps of ≈2.1(1) eV. The magnetic ordering symmetries and temperatures were probed by neutron powder diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy on polycrystalline samples, demonstrating Néel temperatures (T N ) near room temperature in the single layer Sr 2 FeO 3 Cl (T N ≈ 311 K) and Ca 2 FeO 3 Cl (T N ≈ 360 K), and the double-layer compound Sr 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 has T N ≈ 545 K. The high-spin moments of Fe 3+ lie within the basal plane and the magnetic structures are compensated within each magnetic layer and characterized by magnetic propagation vectors k = ($\frac{1}{2}$ $\frac{1}{2}$ 0). Magnetization results demonstrate the quasi-2D nature of the magnetism, with a broad maximum in the susceptibility near 2T N for Sr 2 FeO 3 Cl. Scotch tape tests and mechanical exfoliation onto SiO 2 confirm the micaceous nature of these crystals with cleavage down to a single unit cell (two magnetic layers) achieved for Sr 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 . In conclusion, this paper highlights strong antiferromagnetic interactions, semiconducting band gaps, and cleavability of quaternary Fe-based oxychlorides and motivates future work on crystals and exfoliated flakes of these and related oxyhalide systems.

Dynamics and thermodynamics of the 𝑆 = $\frac{5}{2}$ almost Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet K 2⁢ Mn⁢(SeO 3 ) 2

Here, we report calorimetric, magnetic, and neutron scattering studies on an 𝑆 = 5/2, nearly Heisenberg triangular-lattice antiferromagnet K 2 ⁢Mn⁢(SeO 3 ) 2 with weak XXZ easy-axis anisotropy. Multiple magnetic phases are identified, including a noncollinear Y phase in zero field, a field-induced collinear 𝑚 = 1/3 magnetization plateau, and a high-field V phase. In the Y phase, the magnetic excitation spectrum exhibits both single-magnon excitations and an extended high-energy continuum. Both features are well described by nonlinear spin wave theory. In the field-induced phases, complex effects of the spectrum renormalization even for large 𝑆 = 5/2 material are clearly detectable. These results underscore the essential role of magnon-magnon interactions in the dynamics of large-𝑆 Heisenberg spin systems on a triangular lattice.
