Extreme incompatibility of Pb during the crystallization of magmatic iron meteorites

The partitioning behavior of Pb in the three-phase system metal-troilite-sulfide liquid was investigated. Microscopic examination and electron microprobe analysis of a polished section showed three phases--Fe metal, troilite and an Fe-S-Pb-O metallic liquid. The Pb concentration of the metallic liquid was 1.4 wt.%; the Pb contents of both the troilite and the Fe metal were below the detection limit of the electron probe. To better define the Pb concentrations of the solid phases, the same sample was analyzed for Pb and Fe using the M.I.T., Harvard and Brown ion microprobe. Even at this level of precision, some conclusions and speculations are possible: (1) The D(Pb) (troilite/metallic liquid) is low (.01 to .001) and, contrary to expectation, troilite, like metal, excludes Pb very effectively during the crystallization of metallic liquids; (2) Pb in iron meteorites is conceivably concentrated in trace phases which are less susceptible to contamination than metal and troilite; and (3) taken at face value D(Pb)(metal/troilite) is 0.1, but given the Pb and Fe ion yields from simple endmember phases (Fe, FeS, Pb, PbS), this D is more likely to be 0.05 to 0.03.

The spatial evolution of t he directional wave spectrum in the Southern Ocean: Its relation to extreme waves in Agulhas Current

An experiment using the Shuttle Imaging Radar-B (SIR-B) to monitor certain properties of the ocean wave directional spectrum and to track the long swell systems as they propagate northward to encounter the Agulhas near the southeastern coast of Africa is discussed. The experiment is designed around the unique capability of SIR-B to overcome key limitations of the Seasat synthetic aperture radar data set, and to extend the existing Seasat results into new areas. Ocean wave systems will be tracked. The variable-incidence-angle capability to examine wave imaging quality will be utilized. Doppler current measurements will be attempted. An effort will be made to verify that the lower range-to-velocity ratio of SIR-B will lead to the improved response of azimuth-traveling wave systems.

Extreme Limb Profiles of the Sun at Far Infrared and Submillimeter Wavelengths

Limb intensity profiles at 30, 50, 100, and 200 microns, determined from Kuiper airborne observatory (KAO) observations of the occultation of the solar limb during the total eclipse of July 31, 1981, are presented. Significant but gradual limb brightening was found at the longer wavelengths consistent with the 6000 K temperature-plateau structure of the model chromospheres of Vernazza, Avrett, and Loeser. The 100 and 200 micrometers limbs are extended significantly further above the visible limb than the Vernazza, Avrett, and Loeser model predicts. These results show that the solar chromosphere is strongly perturbed from gravitational-hydrostatic equilibrium to heights as low as 1000 km. These profiles can serve as a powerful diagnostic for modeling the temperature and density of chromospheric structure free from the assumption of gravitational-hydrostatic equilibrium.

The role of silver in self-lubricating coatings for use at extreme temperatures

The advantages and disadvantages of elemental silver as a tribological material are discussed. It is demonstrated that the relatively high melting point of 961 deg C, softness, marked plasticity, and thermochemical stability of silver combine to make this metal useful in thin film solid lubricant coatings over a wide temperature range. Disadvantages of silver during sliding, except when used as a thin film, are shown to be gross ploughing due to plastic deformation under load with associated high friction and excessive transfer to counterface surfaces. This transfer generates an irregular surface topography with consequent undesirable changes in bearing clearance distribution. Research to overcome these disadvantages of element silver is described. A comparison is made of the tribological behavior of pure silver with that of silver formulated with other metals and high-temperature solid lubricants. The composite materials are prepared by co-depositing the powdered components with an airbrush followed by furnace heat treatment or by plasma-spraying. Composite coatings were formulated which are shown to be self-lubricating over repeated, temperature cycles from low temperature to about 900 deg C.

LSS 2018: A double-lined spectroscopic binary central star with an extremely large reflection effect

LSS 2018, the central star of the planetry nebulae DS1, was found to be a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 8.571 hours. Light variations with the same period were observed in U, B, and V; in the wavelength regions defined by the two IUE cameras; and in the strength of the CIII 4647 emission line. The light variations can be accurately predicted by a simple reflection effect, and an analysis of the light curves yields the angular diameter and effective temperature of the primary, the radii of the two stars in terms of their separation, and the inclination of the system. Analysis of the radial velocities then yields the masses of the two stars, their separation, the distance of the system, the absolute magnitude of the primary, and the size of the nebula.

Extreme Precision Antenna Reflector Study Results

Thermal and mechanical distortion degrade the RF performance of antennas. The complexity of future communications antennas requires accurate, dimensionally stable antenna reflectors and structures built from materials other than those currently used. The advantages and disadvantages of using carbon fibers in an epoxy matrix are reviewed as well as current reflector fabrications technology and adjustment. The manufacturing sequence and coefficient of thermal expansion of carbon fiber/borosilicate glass composites is described. The construction of a parabolic reflector from this material and the assembling of both reflector and antenna are described. A 3M-aperture-diameter carbon/glass reflector that can be used as a subassembly for large reflectors is depicted. The deployment sequence for a 10.5M-aperture-diameter antenna, final reflector adjustment, and the deployment sequence for large reflectors are also illustrated.

Extremely high energy hadron and gamma-ray families(3). Core structure of the halo of superfamily

The study of the core structure seen in the halo of Mini-Andromeda 3(M.A.3), which was observed in the Chacaltaya emulsion chamber, is presented. On the assumption that lateral distribution of darkness of the core is exponential type, i.e., D=D0exp(-R/r0), subtraction of D from halo darkness is performed until the cores are gone. The same quantity on cores obtained by this way are summarized. The analysis is preliminary and is going to be developed.

Layered synthetic microstructure technology considerations for the extreme ultraviolet

It is demonstrated that layered synthetic microstructures (LSMs) can provide mirrors with enhanced normal incidence reflectance in the 300-A spectral region. Experimental results are presented for Pt-Si and Ir-Si structures fabricated by electron-beam deposition at pressures of about 10 to the -6th Torr, and it is shown that the enhancement is realized over a limited bandwidth of 75 A. One potential application of LSMs is their use as coatings on diffraction gratings to enhance normal incidence reflection efficiencies. Preliminary results for the Ir-Si combination on a diffraction grating show that LSMs enhance grating efficiencies in the EUV by a factor of about 3.

A generalized sine condition and performance comparison of Wolter type II and Wolter-Schwarzschild extreme ultraviolet telescopes

An equation similar to the Abbe sine condition is derived for a Wolter type II telescope. This equation and the sine condition are then combined to produce a so called generalized sine condition. Using the law of reflection, Fermat's principle, the generalized sine condition, and simple geometry the surface equations for a Wolter type II telescope and an equivalent Wolter-Schwarzschild telescope are calculated. The performances of the telescopes are compared in terms of rms blur circle radius at the Gaussian focal plane and at best focus.

Molybdenum-silicon multilayer mirrors for the extreme ultraviolet

Multilayer structures of molybdenum and silicon have been synthesized by sputter deposition onto flat silicon single-crystal silicon substrates and spherically ground (0.5and 22.0-m radii) fused silica substrates; and the reflectivities for 170.4-A (72.8-eV), 160.1-A (77.4-eV), and 228-A (54.4-eV) light measured at near normal incidence. Observed peak values ranged from 26.2 to 78 percent, the highest reflectivities occurring closest to normal incidence. Energy resolutions were about 10 in all cases. Model calculations were performed using optical constants and experimentally determined multilayer structural parameters. In all cases the measured reflectivities were equal to or larger (by up to a factor of 2) than the calculated values, a result attributed to uncertainty in the optical constants used in the calculations. Experimental and calculated angular-peak positions and energy resolutions were in good agreement. The high reflectivities of these molybdenum-silicon structures will make possible application of traditional optics approaches in the EUV and support new developments including free-electron lasers.

Evidence for extreme Ti-50 enrichments in primitive meteorites

The results of the first high mass resolution ion microprobe study of Ti isotopic compositions in individual refractory grains from primitive carbonaceous meteorites are reported. One hibonite from the Murray carbonaceous chondrite has a 10 percent excess of Ti-50, 25 times higher than the maximum value previously reported for bulk samples of refractory inclusions from carbonaceous chondrites. The variation of the Ti compositions between different hibonite grains, and among pyroxenes from a single Allende refractory inclusion, indicates isotopic inhomogeneities over small scale lengths in the solar nebula and emphasizes the importance of the analysis of small individual phases. This heterogeneity makes it unlikely that the isotopic anomalies were carried into the solar system in the gas phase.

Textured carbon on copper: A novel surface with extremely low secondary electron emission characteristics

Experimentally determined values of true secondary electron emission and relative values of reflected primary electron yield for a range of primary electron beam energies and beam impingement angles are presented for a series of novel textured carbon surfaces on copper substrates. (All copper surfaces used in this study were oxygen-free, high-conductivity grade). The purpose of this investigation is to provide information necessary to develop high-efficiency multistage depressed collectors (MDC's) for microwave amplifier traveling-wave tubes (TWT's) for communications and aircraft applications. To attain the highest TWT signal quality and overall efficiency, the MDC electrode surface must have low secondary electron emission characteristics. While copper is the material most commonly used for MDC electrodes, it exhibits relatively high levels of secondary electron emission unless its surface is treated for emission control. The textured carbon surface on copper substrate described in this report is a particularly promising candidate for the MDC electrode application. Samples of textured carbon surfaces on copper substrates typical of three different levels of treatment are prepared and tested for this study. The materials are tested at primary electron beam energies of 200 to 2000 eV and at direct (0 deg) to near-grazing (85 deg) beam impingement angles. True secondary electron emission and relative reflected primary electron yield characteristics of the textured surfaces are compared with each other and with those of untreated copper. All the textured carbon surfaces on copper substrate tested exhibited sharply lower secondary electron emission characteristics than those of an untreated copper surface.

Extremely metal-deficient red giants. IV - Equivalent widths for 36 halo giants

Further work on a study of 36 metal-poor field red giants is reported. Chemical abundances previously determined were based on model stellar atmosphere analyses of equivalent widths from photographic image-tube echelle spectrograms obtained with with 4-m reflectors at Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo. A tabulation of the equivalent-width data (a total of 18, 275 equivalent widths) is presented.

An extreme clear air turbulence incidence associated with a strong downslope windstorm

The meteorological conditions present during an occurrence of clear-air turbulence (CAT) associated with the presence of a mountain wave are documented. The incident caused severe vertical accelerations of two passenger aircraft travelling at 33,000 ft altitude. Satellite, pilot report and surface and upper air meteorological data were examined to characterize the situation. The CAT was apparently produced by an unusually strong westerly flow over the Rocky Mountains, causing a lee wave over the foothill regions where the turbulence was experienced. A downslope windstorm formed at the same time as wave activity on three scales: 60 nm, 17 nm and 1 nm in the troposphere. The data suggest that surface observations of severe windstorms in the mountain foothill regions could be used to predict the presence of CAT conditions, especially if combined with available data on lee waves.

Crystal/liquid partitioning of REE in basaltic systems Extreme fractionation of REE in olivine

The calculation of partial coefficients for Nd, Sm, Gd, and Yb between olivine and synthetic basaltic melts using the percent level doping technique and microprobe analytical techniques is examined. The experimental and analytical procedures are described. The relationship between rare earth elements (REEs) concentrations and crystal margins caused by Rees X-rays from surrounding glass is discussed. Average olivine/liquid distribution coefficients for Nd, Sm, Gd, and Yb for mare and highlands basaltic melts are presented. The data reveal that the distribution coefficients for light REEs are lower than those obtained in previous studies, and the slope of the olivine/liquid distribution coefficient pattern is steeper; potential sources of error in the previous and present studies which could explain the differences in distribution coefficients and slope are investigated.

H 0323 + 022 - A new BL Lacertae object with extremely rapid variability

Results of a multiband, multiepoch series of observations are reported, demonstrating beyond reasonable doubt that H 0323 + 022 is a remarkably variable BL Lac object. The optical nebulosity around the stellar object is confirmed, the stellar optical radiation is polarized, the radio characteristics and the overall electromagnetic spectrum resemble those of other BL Lac objects. Variability is seen in all bands, including radio and broad-band optical variations in days, optical polarization changes on time scales of tens of minutes, and X-ray changes on time scales of about 30 s. H 0323 + 022 is an active galactic nucleus with much of the observed emission emerging from a region less than about 10 to the 12th to 10 to the 14th cm in size.
