IR Spectra and Bond Energies Computed Using DFT

The combination of density functional theory (DFT) frequencies and infrared (IR) intensities and experimental spectra is a very powerful tool in the identification of molecules and ions. The computed and measured isotopic ratios make the identification much more secure than frequencies and intensities alone. This will be illustrated using several examples, such as Mn(CO)n and Mn(CO)n-. The accuracy of DFT metal-ligand bond energies will also be discussed.

Joint influence of γ–irradiation and high temperature shear grinding on the IR spectra and surface–energy properties of polyethylene

The optical and surface-energy properties of polyethylene (PE) subjected to γ-irradiation and post-radiation, high temperature, shear grinding are presented. Comparison of the IR spectra of the initial and γ-irradiated PE shows that oxygen-containing groups and unsaturated bonds in the polymer macromolecules are formed and accumulate during their radiolysis in air, increasing with γ-irradiation dose. A redistribution of the products of radiation-chemical conversion on the surface of the polymer granules throughout the entire volume of the powder occurs after high-temperature shear milling to a powder as observed in the IR spectrum. Polar functional groups due to oxidation reactions are observed on the surface layer of the sample after post-radiation grinding. Furthermore, the initial polymer surface is weakly basic with an acidity parameter of -0.34. The value of the acidity parameter of the sample made of ground irradiated PE has an acidic surface with an acidity parameter of 0.65. γ irradiation of the secondary processing of PE waste with high-temperature shear grinding is a promising approach to obtain a secondary PE powder with specified parameters and different degrees of functionalization.

Further comparison of theory and experiment for decay of homogeneous turbulence.

An analysis of the decay of homogeneous turbulence from a given initial state is compared with the experiment of Lin and Huang (1970). Comparisons were made for decay of turbulent energy, decay of energy-transfer spectra, decay of three-dimensional turbulent-energy spectra, and decay of higher-order spectral quantities V, R, and S, where these respectively represent functionals of three-, four-, and five-point spectral quantities. Good agreement between theory and experiment is noted.

Solar Modulation of Low-Energy Antiproton and Proton Spectra Measured by BESS

The spectra of low-energy cosmic-ray protons and antiprotons have been measured by BESS in nine high-latitude balloon flights between 1993 and 2004. These measurements span a range of solar activity from the previous solar minimum through solar ma>:im%am and the onset of the present solar minimum, as well as a solar magnetic field reversal from positive to negative in 2000. Because protons and antiprotons differ only in charge sign, these simultaneous measurements provide a sensitive probe of charge dependent solar modulation. The antiproton to proton ratio measured by BESS is consistent with simple spherically symmetric models of solar modulation during the Sun's positive polarity phase, but favor charge-sign-dependent drift models during the negative phase. The BESS measurements will be presented and compared to various models of solar modulation.

Detection of molecular infrared spectra

Total energy distribution measurements of field emitted electrons detect molecular infrared spectra of adsorbed molecules. Tunneling electron gives up energy to excite various modes of adsorbed molecule. These electrons, when energy-analyzed, show up on the collector and exhibit the spectra of various modes excited by tunneling electrons.

Survey of quantitative data on the solar energy and its spectra distribution

This paper presents a survey of available quantitative data on the total and spectral solar irradiance at ground level and outside the atmosphere. Measurements from research aircraft have resulted in the currently accepted NASA/ASTM standards of the solar constant and zero air mass solar spectral irradiance. The intrinsic variability of solar energy output and programs currently under way for more precise measurements from spacecraft are discussed. Instrumentation for solar measurements and their reference radiation scales are examined. Insolation data available from the records of weather stations are reviewed for their applicability to solar energy conversion. Two alternate methods of solarimetry are briefly discussed.

Analysis of observational spectra

The first step in the analysis of gamma ray energy loss spectra is their conversion to differential energy and differential angular photon spectra. This conversion can be carried out if the detector response and the background are both known. Once these parameters are known, there are many techniques that can be used to convert pulse height spectra to photon spectra. These techniques are discussed and background problems are considered. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of energy loss spectra in the lower gamma ray energy domain. Problems of transportations from pulse height to photon space are most complex in this domain and the methods shown illustrate many of the problems which arise in the general analysis of energy loss spectra.

Effects of recoil spectra and electronic energy dissipation on defect survival in 3C-SiC

The coincidence of electronic and damage energy dissipation from energetic ions to an atomic lattice can significantly affect damage production along the ion trajectory due to spatial overlap of inelastic and elastic processes. Damage production and disordering in single crystal 3C-SiC from 5 MeV Si and 10 MeV Au ions is investigated using ion-channeling experiments. While defects are created by damage energy dissipation via elastic scattering, electronic energy dissipation via electron-phonon coupling decreases defect survival along the ion trajectory for Si ions. Finally, the more energetic recoil spectrum for 10 MeV Au ions leads to weaker spatial coupling of electronic and damage energy dissipation processes, and damage production is only weakly affected.

Vibrationally inelastic low-energy CO/+/ - Ar collisions.

Examination of relative differential cross sections for inelastic scattering of CO(+) by Ar with a high-resolution ion-beam apparatus in which a CO(+) beam interacts with a neutral-Ar beam, and the energy, mass, and angular distribution of scattered ions are measured. Maxima in the inelastic energy-loss spectra occur at energies corresponding to CO(+) spectroscopic vibrational spacings. Weakly inelastic processes are observed below the threshold for vibrational energy loss, corresponding to rotational excitation with the relative importance of rotational transitions increasing with decreasing energy and scattering angle.

Spectral feature of 31 December 1981 gamma-ray burst not confirmed

Measurements of a gamma ray burst at 01:37 UT on December 31, 1981 using the SMM gamma ray spectrometer (GRS) are compared with those made by the Konus instruments on Veneras 11-14. Burst time profiles, photon spectra, and detector energy loss spectra for three time intervals are compared for the GRS and the Konus instruments. It is concluded that the SMM spectra exhibit no evidence for the presence of emission features reported by the Konus group.

Dual spectra and mixed energy cascade of turbulence in the wavelet representation

The wavelet-transformed Navier-Stokes equations are used to define quantities such as the transfer of kinetic energy and the flux of kinetic energy through scale r at position x. Direct numerical simulations of turbulent shear flow reveal that although their mean spatial values agree with their traditional counterparts in Fourier space, their spatial variability at every scale is very large, exhibiting non-Gaussian statistics. The local flux of energy involving scales smaller than some r also exhibits large spatial intermittency, and it is negative quite often, indicative of local inverse cascades.

The disks of T Tauri stars with flat infrared spectra

The energy distributions of T Tauri stars with flat infrared spectra is modeled by assuming that they have spatially thin disks with unorthodox radial gradients of temperature. Derived model parameters show that the disks associated with the flat-spectrum sources must contain intrinsic luminosity in addition to the energy intercepted and reprocessed from the central star, i.e., the disks must be active. Self-gravity may provide a possible source for this activity.

Electron impact excitation of coronene

A preliminary study of the electron-impact excitation of thermally evaporated coronene at 550 C was carried out using electron-energy-loss spectroscopy. Measurements of the energy-loss spectra of coronene at high (100 eV) and low (5-20 eV) impact energies are presented. One of the high-energy spectra was converted to an apparent generalized oscillator strength spectrum and compared to the photoabsorption spectrum of coronene. Observations concerning vibrational excitation of coronene by electron impact are also presented and discussed.
