Survival of E. Coli in the Rhizosphere and Phyllosphere of Leafy Greens Grown in Controlled Environment Chambers Under International Space Station Conditions

NASA's mission for manned long- duration space exploration drives the research for crop selection to provide a nutritious and safe supplement to an astronaut's diet. Understanding plant growth, health, and the associated microbial communities in closed environments will be critical to the success of this mission. Cultivation of crops in closed controlled environment agricultural systems may limit microbial colonization and reduce diversity of the microbial communities. Furthermore, practices like seed and growth medium sanitization may impact microbial communities in the mature plant and the capacity to limit the growth of food borne pathogens through competition.

Apolipoprotein A5 reduces clearance of VLDL by altering apolipoprotein E content

Apolipoprotein A-V (APOA5) is a critical regulator of circulating triglyceride (TG) levels. Its deletion leads to elevated plasma TG concentrations by altering the metabolism of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles in vivo. One way APOA5 exerts its effects is through modulation of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity, specifically by disrupting inhibitory interactions between LPL and angiopoietin-like proteins (ANGPTLs). However, the impact of APOA5 on VLDL composition and its potential to alter VLDL metabolism in other ways remains poorly understood. To address this, we investigated the influence of APOA5 on the VLDL proteome, LPL activation, and hepatic remnant uptake. Using VLDL from Apoa5 knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice, we found no evidence that APOA5 directly enhances LPL activity in purified or plasma systems. However, VLDL from Apoa5 K mice was cleared significantly more slowly by cultured hepatocytes. Proteomics experiments from two independent laboratories identified consistent depletion of 17 proteins involved in lipoprotein metabolism, inflammation, and immune response in Apoa5 KO VLDL, including APOE and serum amyloid A1 (SAA1). Remarkably, reintroduction of recombinant mouse APOA5 to the KO plasma partially restored the WT VLDL proteome, including APOE, and normalized VLDL uptake by hepatocytes without altering LPL lipolysis. These findings reveal that APOA5 influences hepatic clearance of VLDL remnants by modulating particle composition, particularly APOE content. This study expands the functional scope of APOA5 in TG metabolism and underscores its role in VLDL remodeling and remnant clearance, offering new insights with implications for understanding hypertriglyceridemia and its roles in inflammation and immune response.

Stopping Force Analysis of 235 U Elemental Fission Product Yields for $E_n$ = 0.11–92.4 MeV

We report most evaluated elemental fission product yield distributions are not experimentally measured. Instead, the majority of evaluated distributions are based on analytic expressions of the Zp-model for relevant cumulative yields. Here we report independent elemental fission product yield distributions of a 235 U target for incident neutron energies ranging from 0.11 MeV through 92.4 MeV. Atomic numbers are calculated by an approach that combines a 2E analysis with a stopping force analysis method, developed within this paper. These analyses are applied to more than 6.1 × 10 6 fission fragment ionization tracks captured within the NIFFTE (Neutron Induced Fission Fragment Tracking Experiment) collaboration fission time projection chamber (fissionTPC). A 3-Z resolution was obtained with the fissionTPC spatial and energy resolutions. Tabulated results are presented for the atomic yield and experimentally derived Zp values as a function of pre-neutron-emission fragment masses for the complete range of incident neutron energies. The stopping-force-derived Zp values tend to support the unchanged charge distribution theory within uncertainty.

Comparison of effects from gamma, e-beam and X-ray radiation on multilayer polymer films used in biopharmaceutical devices by chemometric treatment of spectroscopic data

The present study investigated the effects of gamma-ray, electron beam, and X-ray radiation on polymers in EVA/EVOH/EVA multilayer films. Spectroscopic methods, including FTIR and UV–Vis, were employed in conjunction with chemometric treatments such as PCA, SIMPLISMA treatments, and PLS models. The feasibility of dose prediction on multilayer film, given a known dose, is attainable across various irradiation technologies. Both gamma ray and X-ray exhibit comparable effects on the multilayer film, and it is feasible to anticipate the dose released on the film by utilizing UV–Vis spectra or infrared spectra for gamma ray or X-ray of a predetermined dose.

Comparative study on the overall energy performance between photovoltaic and Low-E insulated glass units

In this report a novel semi-transparent building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) laminate was developed and introduced in this paper. It was produced by cutting standard mono-crystalline silicon solar cells into small strips and then making electrical connections between each strip before laminating the cells between two layers of glass. The overall energy performance and energy saving potential of the BIPV insulated glass unit (IGU) under real world conditions were identified through a side by side comparative study. Compared to the reference IGU, the BIPV IGU had lower solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) but much higher U-factor. The average HVAC electricity saving of the BIPV IGU was about 10% relative to the reference IGU. Daylighting measurement and analysis were carried out to evaluate the trade-offs associated with the BIPV IGU between daylight, glare, and lighting energy use. The results indicated that the BIPV IGU is better than the reference IGU in reducing discomfort glare. However, if the most conservative viewpoint near the window is used for the assessment, a lower transmittance BIPV IGU is required to bring the overall discomfort levels below the perceptible level. Lastly, the net energy saving potential associated with the novel BIPV IGU was identified based on the power, thermal and daylighting performance. On average, the BIPV IGU saved 16.8% of the total electricity use of the room. Further studies and improvement on the energy conversion efficiency of solar cells, the optimal transmittance as well as the thermal properties would make this technology more energy-efficient and affordable.
