Manufacture of bulk superconducting YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) by a continuous process

The development of a continuous process for fabricating large bulk superconductors with a predetermined grain orientation is reported. A bar of the 123 compound with dimensions 5 x 0.5 x about 0.3 cm with excellent grain alignment has been fabricated continuously. The bulk 123 thus obtained has magnetically determined J(c)s of about 30,000 and 12,000 A/sq cm at 0 and 1 T, respectively, and transport J(c)s of 20,000, 11,000, and 7500 A-sq cm at 0, 0.54, and 0.83 T.

Near-edge study of gold-substituted YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)

The valence of Cu and Au in YBa2Au0.3Cu2.7O7-delta was investigated using x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). X-ray and neutron diffraction studies indicate that Au goes on the Cu(1) site and Cu K-edge XANES shows that this has little effect on the oxidation state of the remaining copper. The Au L3 edge develops a white line feature whose position lies between that of trivalent gold oxide and monovalent potassium gold cyanide, and whose height relative to the edge step is smaller than in the two reference compounds. The appearance of the Au L3 edge suggests that fewer Au 3d states are involved in forming the Au-O bond in YBa2Au0.3Cu2.7O7-delta than in trivalent gold oxide.

Unsteady surface pressure measurements on a slender delta wing undergoing limit cycle wing rock

An experimental investigation of slender wing limit cycle motion known as wing rock was investigated using two unique experimental systems. Dynamic roll moment measurements and visualization data on the leading edge vortices were obtained using a free to roll apparatus that incorporates an airbearing spindle. In addition, both static and unsteady surface pressure data was measured on the top and bottom surfaces of the model. To obtain the unsteady surface pressure data a new computer controller drive system was developed to accurately reproduce the free to roll time history motions. The data from these experiments include, roll angle time histories, vortex trajectory data on the position of the vortices relative to the model's surface, and surface pressure measurements as a function of roll angle when the model is stationary or undergoing a wing rock motion. The roll time history data was numerically differentiated to determine the dynamic roll moment coefficient. An analysis of these data revealed that the primary mechanism for the limit cycle behavior was a time lag in the position of the vortices normal to the wing surface.

Deposition of high quality YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films over large areas by pulsed laser ablation with substrate scanning

The paper describes thin films deposited in a system where substrates are scanned over areas up to 3.5 x 3.5 cm through the stationary plume of an ablated material defined by an aperture. These YBCO films are deposited on LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates with the thickness of 90 and 160 nm. Attention is focused on the main features of the deposition system: line focusing of the laser beam on the target; an aperture defining the area of the plume; computerized stepper motor-driven X-Y stage translating the heated sampler holder behind the plume-defining aperture in programmed patterns; and substrate mounting block with uniform heating at high temperatures over large areas. It is noted that the high degree of uniformity of the properties in each film batch illustrates that the technique of pulsed laser deposition can be applied to produce large YBCO films of high quality.

The Carlisle Lakes-type chondrites - A new grouplet with high Delta(17)O and evidence for nebular oxidation

The petrogenesis of the Carlisle Lakes-type chondrites and their relationship to other chondrites are studied using new petrologic data, especially on mineralogical zoning patterns, and oxygen isotopic analyses of the whole chondrites and some of chondrules. Detailed zoning profiles of mafic silicates are measured in order to determine the environment(s) in which their oxidation states are established. It is concluded that the zoning did not form during crystallization from a melt droplet chondrule but post-dated chondrule formation. Parent-body thermal metamorphism and nebular gas-solid exchange reactions accompanied by condensation of new FeO-rich olivine, utilizing existing olivine surfaces as nucleation sites are considered as hypotheses explaining the zoning. The occurrence of zoned grains in a host that is mainly equilibrated suggests that the equilibration of the Carlisle Lakes-type chondrites occurred prior to final lithification.

Delta-Doped Buried Channels In Charge-Coupled Device

Buried-channel charge-couple devices (CCD's) of proposed new type contain multiple thin, highly-doped channel layers instead of single relatively thick channel layers. Benefits: better performance at low temperature and less sensitivity to damage by radiation.

Use of Taguchi Design of Experiments to Determine ALPLS Ascent Delta-5 Sensitivities and Total Mass Sensitivities to Release Conditions and Vehicle Parameters

The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of Taguchi's Design of Experiment Methods to improve the effectiveness of this and future parametric studies. Taguchi Methods will be applied in addition to the typical approach to provide a mechanism for comparing the results and the cost or effort necessary to complete the studies. It is anticipated that results of this study should include an improved systematic analysis process, an increase in information obtained at a lower cost, and a more robust, cost effective vehicle design.

Final design proposal: Delta Group-Nood Rider 821(tm)

The Nood Rider 821 (trademark) twin-engine, prop passenger aircraft is described. It is argued that the aircraft is very economical to operate and maintain, offering competitive advantages in the air travel marketplace. The aircraft was designed to operate in 'Aeroworld', a fictional world where the passengers are ping pong balls and the distances between cites are on the order of thousands of feet.

Flow field over the wing of a delta-wing fighter model with vortex control devices at Mach 0.6 to 1.2

As part of a cooperative research program between NASA, McDonnell Douglas Corporation, and Wright Research and Development Center, a flow field investigation was conducted on a 7.52 percent scale windtunnel model of an advanced fighter aircraft design. The investigation was conducted in the Langley 16 ft Transonic Tunnel at Mach numbers of 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2. Angle of attack was varied from -4 degrees to 30 degrees and the model was tested at angles of sideslip of 0, 5, and -5 degrees. Data for the over the wing flow field were obtained at four axial survey stations by the use of six 5 hole conical probes mounted on a survey mechanism. The wing leading edge primary vortex exerted the greatest influence in terms of total pressure loss on the over the wing flow field in the area surveyed. A number of vortex control devices were also investigated. They included two different apex flaps, wing leading edge vortex flaps, and small large wing fences. The vortex flap and both apex flaps were beneficial in controlling the wing leading edge primary vortex.
