Observation of a J / ψ Λ Resonance Consistent with a Strange Pentaquark Candidate in B - → J / ψ Λ p ¯ Decays

An amplitude analysis of Β - → J/ψ⁢Λ⁢$\overline{p}$ decays is performed using 4400 signal candidates selected on a data sample of pp collisions recorded at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 . A narrow resonance in the J/ψ⁢Λ system, consistent with a pentaquark candidate with strangeness, is observed with high significance. The mass and the width of this new state are measured to be 4338.2±0.7±0.4 MeV and 7.0±1.2±1.3 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The spin is determined to be 1/2 and negative parity is preferred. Because of the small Q-value of the reaction, the most precise single measurement of the B- mass to date, 5279.44±0.05±0.07 MeV, is obtained.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of $W$ Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in $\sqrt3$ = TeV $pp$ Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton ($\mathscr{N}$) in 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt3$ = TeV $pp$ collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The $\mathscr{N}$ is produced via W → $\mathscr{N}$ μ or W → $\mathscr{N}$e and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The $\mathscr{N}$ mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. No signal is observed, and limits are set on the squared mixing parameters of the $\mathscr{N}$ with the left-handed neutrino states for the $\mathscr{N}$ mass range 3 GeV < $m$ $\mathscr{N}$ < 15 GeV. For the first time, limits are given for both single-flavor and multiflavor mixing scenarios motivated by neutrino flavor oscillation results for both the normal and inverted neutrino-mass hierarchies.

Observation of a Resonant Structure near the D s + D s - Threshold in the B + → D s + D s - K + Decay

An amplitude analysis of the B + → $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ ⁢K + decay is carried out to study for the first time its intermediate resonant contributions, using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as X⁡(3960), is observed in the $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ invariant-mass spectrum with significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width, and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be 3956 ± 5 ± 10 MeV, 43 ± 13 ± 8 MeV, and J P⁢C = 0 ++ , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state composed of c$\overline{c}$s$\overline{s}$ quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is found around 4140 MeV in the $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ invariant mass, which might be caused either by a new resonance with the 0 ++ assignment or by a J/ψ⁢Φ ↔ $D^{+}_{s}$ $D^{-}_{s}$ coupled-channel effect.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the $H→γγ$ and $H→ZZ$*→ 4⁢ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8, and 13 TeV $pp$ Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H → ZZ* → 4ℓ and H → γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140 fb –1 of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11 ± 0.09 (stat.) ± 0.06 (syst.) = 125.11 ± 0.11 GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09 % precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Measurement of C P Violation in B 0 → ψ ( → ℓ + ℓ − ) K S 0 ( → π + π − ) Decays

A measurement of time-dependent C P violation in the decays of B 0 and B ¯ 0 mesons to the final states J / ψ ( → μ + μ − ) K S 0 , ψ ( 2 S ) ( → μ + μ − ) K S 0 and J / ψ ( → e + e − ) K S 0 with K S 0 → π + π − is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. The C P -violation parameters are measured to be S ψ K S 0 = 0.717 ± 0.013 ( stat ) ± 0.008 ( syst ) and C ψ K S 0 = 0.008 ± 0.012 ( stat ) ± 0.003 ( syst ) . This measurement of S ψ K S 0 represents the most precise single measurement of the CKM angle β to date and is more precise than the current world average. In addition, measurements of the C P -violation parameters of the individual channels are reported and a combination with the LHCb Run 1 measurements is performed. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Fraction of χ c Decays in Prompt J / ψ Production Measured in p Pb Collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The fraction of χ c 1 and χ c 2 decays in the prompt J / ψ yield, F χ c → J / ψ = σ χ c → J / ψ / σ J / ψ , is measured by the LHCb detector in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV . The study covers the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions, where y * is the J / ψ rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass system. Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 ± 0.3 and 20.8 ± 0.5 nb − 1 , respectively. The result is presented as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum p T , J / ψ in the range 1 < p T , J / ψ < 20 GeV / c . The F χ c → J / ψ fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in p p collisions at s = 7 TeV , whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 σ larger than in the forward region for 1 < p T , J / ψ < 3 GeV / c . The increase of F χ c → J / ψ at low p T , J / ψ at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the ψ ( 2 S ) contribution to the prompt J / ψ yield. The lack of in-medium dissociation of χ c states observed in this study sets an upper limit of 180 MeV on the free energy available in these p Pb collisions to dissociate or inhibit charmonium state formation. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Azimuthal Angle Correlations of Muons Produced via Heavy-Flavor Decays in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

Angular correlations between heavy quarks provide a unique probe of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Results are presented of a measurement of the azimuthal angle correlations between muons originating from semileptonic decays of heavy quarks produced in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp collisions at the LHC. The muons are measured with transverse momenta and pseudorapidities satisfying p$^μ_T$ > 4 GeV and |η μ | < 2.4, respectively. The distributions of azimuthal angle separation Δ⁢Φ for muon pairs having pseudorapidity separation |Δη| > 0.8, are measured in different Pb +Pb centrality intervals and compared to the same distribution measured in pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. Results are presented separately for muon pairs with opposite-sign charges, same-sign charges, and all pairs. A clear peak is observed in all Δ⁢Φ distributions at Δ⁢Φ ~ π, consistent with the parent heavy-quark pairs being produced via hard-scattering processes. The widths of that peak, characterized using Cauchy-Lorentz fits to the Δ⁢Φ distributions, are found to not vary significantly as a function of Pb +Pb collision centrality and are similar for pp and Pb +Pb collisions. This observation will provide important constraints on theoretical descriptions of heavy-quark interactions with the quark-gluon plasma.

Limits on W R from Meson Decays

In this Letter we show that pseudoscalar meson leptonic decay data can be used to set stringent limits on the mass $m$ W$_{R}$ of a right-handed vector boson, such as the one that appears in left-right symmetric models. We have shown that for a heavy neutrino with a mass $m_N$ in the range 50 < $m_N$/MeV < 1900 one can constraint $m$ W$_{R}$ ≳ (4–19) TeV at 90% CL. This provides the most stringent experimental limits on the $W_R$ mass to date for this heavy neutrino mass range.

Search for the Z Boson Decay to τ τ μ μ in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The first search for the Z boson decay to τ τ μ μ at the CERN LHC is presented, based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . The data are compatible with the predicted background. For the first time, an upper limit at the 95% confidence level of 6.9 times the standard model expectation is placed on the ratio of the Z → τ τ μ μ to Z → 4 μ branching fractions. Limits are also placed on the six flavor-conserving four-lepton effective-field-theory operators involving two muons and two tau leptons, for the first time testing all such operators. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Evidence of h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) η Decay and Search for h b ( 1 P , 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 with the Belle Detector

We report the first evidence for the h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) η transition with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations. The decay branching fraction is measured to be B [ h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) η ] = ( 7.1 − 3.2 + 3.7 ± 0.8 ) × 10 − 3 , which is noticeably smaller than expected. We also set upper limits on π 0 transitions of B [ h b ( 2 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 − 3 , and B [ h b ( 1 P ) → ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 − 3 , at the 90% confidence level. These results are obtained with a 131.4 fb − 1 data sample collected near the ϒ ( 5 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. Observation of an Axial-Vector State in the Study of the Decay ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′

Using ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, a partial wave analysis of the decay ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′ is performed with the covariant tensor approach. In addition to the established states h 1 ( 1900 ) and ϕ ( 2170 ) , an axial-vector state with a mass near 2.3 GeV / c 2 is observed for the first time. Its mass and width are measured to be 2316 ± 9 stat ± 3 0 syst MeV / c 2 and 89 ± 1 5 stat ± 2 6 syst MeV , respectively. The product branching fractions of B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → X ( 2300 ) η ′ ] B [ X ( 2300 ) → ϕ η ] and B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → X ( 2300 ) η ] B [ X ( 2300 ) → ϕ η ′ ] are determined to be ( 4.8 ± 1.3 stat ± 0.7 syst ) × 10 − 6 and ( 2.2 ± 0.7 stat ± 0.7 syst ) × 10 − 6 , respectively. The branching fraction B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′ ] is measured for the first time to be ( 3.14 ± 0.1 7 stat ± 0.2 4 syst ) × 10 − 5 . Noncommutative field theory of the Tkachenko mode: Symmetries and decay rate

We construct an effective field theory describing the collective Tkachenko oscillation mode of a vortex lattice in a two-dimensional rotating Bose-Einstein condensate in the long-wavelength regime. The theory has the form of a noncommutative field theory of a Nambu-Goldstone boson, which exhibits a noncommutative version of dipole symmetry. From the effective field theory, we show that, at zero temperature, the decay width Γ of the Tkachenko mode scales with its energy E as Γ ∼ E 3 in the low-energy limit. We also discuss the width of the Tkachenko mode at a small temperature. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the Alfvén Wave Parametric Decay Instability Growth Rate

Alfvén waves, a fundamental mode of magnetized plasmas, are ubiquitous in space and laboratory plasmas. The nonlinear behavior of these modes is thought to play a key role in important problems in space plasma, such as the heating of the solar corona and solar wind turbulence. In particular, theoretical predictions show that these Alfvén waves may be unstable to various parametric instabilities, but space observations of these processes are limited. We demonstrate the first measurement of the Alfvén wave parametric decay instability (PDI) growth rate. Experiments are conducted on the Large Plasma Device at UCLA in which a high amplitude 𝛿⁢𝐵/𝐵 0 ∼ 0.7% pump Alfvén wave is launched from one end of the device and a smaller seed Alfvén wave is launched from the other side. When the frequency of the seed wave is chosen to match the backward wave expected from PDI, damping of the seed wave is reduced. We compare this reduction in damping to the theoretically expected PDI growth rate while accounting for acoustic mode damping. Results show agreement between measurements and theoretical predictions. As a result, this not only provides critical validation for PDI theories and simulations that could help interpret future space observations but also suggests a new way of studying similar nonlinear wave phenomena.

Quantum imaging with positronium-decay-emitted gamma rays

The use of entangled gamma rays from positronium decay for quantum-enhanced imaging of dense materials is demonstrated. Quantum ghost images, where only one of the entangled 511-keV photons interacts with the object, are obtained for tantalum samples of varying density using a 210-ps time-resolution dual detector system and a Na-22 positron source. An analysis comparing both classical and quantum imaging modalities is employed to isolate true 511-keV events from background noise. Image quality is quantitatively assessed using transmission ratios and the Michelson contrast. Quantum-correlated images are found to exhibit superior (up to approximately 1.7x, from 0.49 to 0.83 in the thickest sample measured) contrast compared to classical methods and align well with theoretical expectations. These results suggest that quantum ghost imaging with positronium-based entangled gamma rays could significantly enhance noninvasive imaging of high-density objects, with potential applications in areas such as cargo inspection and security screening.

Decaying scalar dark matter in the minimal left-right symmetric model

In the minimal left-right symmetric theory, the dark matter candidate is usually ascribed to the lightest right-handed neutrino. Here we present an alternative decaying dark matter candidate in this model in terms of the lightest neutral scalar from the 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝑅 -triplet field. This setup requires a vast hierarchy between the scalar mass and the left-right symmetry breaking scale, which renders the scalar dark matter sufficiently stable on cosmological time scales. The stability of the dark matter imposes constraints on the right-handed neutrino mass, which has consequences for the neutrino mass generation, as well as for leptogenesis. Although somewhat fine-tuned, it provides a very economical scenario wherein the minimal left-right model can simultaneously explain dark matter, neutrino masses, and the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe.

Capacitance Transients, Photoconductive Decay, and Impedance Spectroscopy on 19% to 22% Efficient Silicon Solar Cells

High efficiency silicon solar cells are characterized using current-voltage curves, electroluminescence imaging, impedance spectroscopy, capacitance transients, microwave photoconductive decay, and time-resolved photoluminescence imaging. The sample set is composed of cells from different manufacturers and includes an n-type silicon heterojunction (SHJ), an n-type passivated emitter rear totally diffused (PERT), and five different p-type passivated emitter rear contact (PERC) cells. Carrier lifetimes, both photoconductivity and photoluminescence, are measured co-located with the light excitation pulse and within the cell but away from the light spot. Luminescence intensity and excess carrier lifetimes correlate to cell voltage. The capacitance transient time constants correlate to the capacitance values extracted from impedance spectroscopy.
