Laser system design and critical technologies for the NSF OPAL project

The three-year NSF OPAL project is completing the preliminary design of a 2 x 25-PW all-optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) system capable of delivering 500-J, 20-fs pulses. The design includes two Alpha beamlines that can be co-timed and pointed into two experimental areas for high-intensity research in several configurations. Additionally, a more flexible 2-PW Beta beam can be used in place of one Alpha beam to allow a wider range of focusing geometries and synchronized electron-beam generation for diverse experimental applications. Here, building on the development of the mid-scale MTW-OPAL prototype system, the NSF OPAL project also focuses on advancing essential technologies, such as large-grating fabrication techniques and actively-cooled disk amplifiers.

Semiconductor quantum dots: Technological progress and future challenges

In quantum-confined semiconductor nanostructures, electrons exhibit distinctive behavior compared with that in bulk solids. This enables the design of materials with tunable chemical, physical, electrical, and optical properties. Zero-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) offer strong light absorption and bright narrowband emission across the visible and infrared wavelengths and have been engineered to exhibit optical gain and lasing. These properties are of interest for imaging, solar energy harvesting, displays, and communications. Here, we offer an overview of advances in the synthesis and understanding of QD nanomaterials, with a focus on colloidal QDs, and discuss their prospects in technologies such as displays and lighting, lasers, sensing, electronics, solar energy conversion, photocatalysis, and quantum information.

Engineered Wood: Sustainable Technologies and Applications

Natural wood has been used for construction, fuel, and furniture for thousands of years because of its versatility, renewability, and aesthetic appeal. However, new opportunities for wood are arising as researchers have developed ways to tune the material's optical, thermal, mechanical, and ionic transport properties by chemically and physically modifying wood's naturally porous structure and chemical composition. Such modifications can be used to produce sustainable, functional materials for various emerging applications such as automobiles, construction, energy storage, and environmental remediation. In this review, we highlight recent advancements in engineered wood for sustainable technologies, including thermal and light management, environmental remediation, nanofluidics, batteries, and structural materials with high strength-to-weight ratios. Additionally, the current challenges, opportunities, and future of wood research are discussed, providing a guideline for the further development of next-generation, sustainable wood-based materials.

Next-generation geospatial-temporal information technologies for disaster management

Traditional geographic information systems (GIS) have been disrupted by the emergence of Big Data in the form of geo-coded raster, vector, and time-series Internet-of-Things data. This article discusses the application of new scalable technologies that go far beyond relational databases and file-based storage on spinning disk or tape to incorporate both storage and processing data in the same platform. The roles of the Apache Hadoop Distributed File Systems and NoSQL key-value stores such as the Apache Hbase are discussed, along with indexing schemes that optimally support geospatial-temporal use. Here, we highlight how this new approach can rapidly search multiple GIS data layers to obtain insights in the context of early warning, impact evaluation, response, and recovery to earthquake and wildfire disasters.

HIPSTER (Harmonized Impacts across Products, Scenarios, and Technologies for Environmental and Resource metrics) [SWR-24-17]

Development of a prototype, code-based life cycle assessment framework, the Harmonized Impacts across Products, Scenarios, and Technologies for Environmental and Resource metrics (HIPSTER), to coherently assess outputs of prospective NREL models across environmental and resource use metrics. Eventually, HIPSTER is aimed to also cover socioeconomic and justice metrics. At present, NREL model scenario impact assessments are performed incoherently, as they as based on varying assumptions and inputs, specifically life cycle inventories, and cover different system boundaries. HIPSTER was created to align the assumptions and boundaries with those of cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment. In FY22, HIPSTER was successfully applied using scenarios from the ReEDS™ model, NREL's flagship capacity expansion model resulting in cradle-to-grace time-series life cycle impacts across LCA midpoints and resource use metrics.

Norms, Norm Sets, and Reference Groups: Implications for Household Interest in Energy Technologies

Household adoption of rooftop solar panels and battery storage can potentially reduce the negative environmental impacts of the electric grid. We argue that the number of socially close (friends and family) and geographically close (neighbors) others who have rooftop solar panels will affect norm expectations regarding how much others approve of solar panels and battery storage and expectations about how personally beneficial those technologies are likely to be. We test our hypotheses using survey data collected from California homeowners and find partial support. We find evidence for the significance of socially close others (rather than neighbors), highlighting the importance of identifying the appropriate reference groups when studying norms. Our results also provide insight into how one category of behavior (adoption of solar panels) can influence norm expectations about another less visible behavior (battery storage), suggesting a mechanism that may contribute to norms regulating private behaviors.

Groundwater Remediation with Pump-and-Treat Technology

Pump-and-treat (P&T) is a widely used remediation technology that involves pumping groundwater from extraction wells in the subsurface, removing contaminants of concern from the groundwater in an aboveground treatment system, reintroducing treated water into the environment – often by injection back into the groundwater aquifer or by discharge to the surface–, and groundwater monitoring to evaluate performance. In this chapter we explore how the Hanford Site uses the P&T remediation approach to treat contaminated groundwater. Six P&T facilities currently operate at the Hanford Site; however, this chapter uses the 100 Area DX and HX P&T facilities' treatment of hexavalent chromium as a case study to discuss this remediation approach. Located in the River Corridor, HX and DX P&T facilities are much closer to reaching closure than the younger 200W P&T facility located in the Central Plateau’s 200W Area. As such, one can follow the historical design, operation, and optimization steps that have led these facilities closer to closure.

Digital-Twin-Enabling Technologies for Online Condition Monitoring of Nuclear Power Plant Components

Online condition monitoring is an area of active research that may enable optimized scheduling, maintenance, and safety of nuclear power plant components, reducing unnecessary derates while simultaneously improving operational capacity. Digital twins (DTs) are one avenue to conduct online condition monitoring and are currently being explored by national laboratories and universities alike. DTs for online condition monitoring are, in essence, state concurrent models that emulate a physical process which predicts a parameter and compares it against a measured value. A DT’s goal is to provide additional insights by combining and interpreting various sources of information for preventative maintenance scheduling optimization or early fault detection. DTs for condition monitoring are projected to be valuable for meeting requirements under 10 CFR 50.55a, “Codes and Standards,” and 10 CFR 50.65, “Requirements for Monitoring the Effectiveness of Maintenance at Nuclear Power Plants”. However, DT technologies are still under significant development, and the process for developing a DT for condition monitoring has not been formalized. Therefore, in this work, we present an initial framework for developing a DT, discuss and review the various challenges and considerations for DT deployment, and identify the opportunities that a DT can improve. The presented framework is intended to help developers formulate a strategy when approaching DT development for condition monitoring. In conclusion, a DT use case for a reactor coolant pump is presented to demonstrate the proposed framework.

INTREPID program: technology and architecture for next-generation, energy-efficient, hyper-scale data centers [Invited]

The INTREPID program is developing power-efficient coherent optics for package-level integration with future switch integrated circuits as a path to realizing higher-radix switches for flatter networks. The link architecture is underpinned by coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) polarization-multiplex transceivers at 200 Gb/s per λ <#comment/> , further enhanced with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to enable energy-efficient 800 or 1600 Gb/s inter-switch fiber connections. The technology is compatible with conventional three-level data center designs as well as a two-level data center design introduced here, which includes an added layer of passive, arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGRs) or WDM circuit switches to further improve the cost, energy efficiency, and latency of the network.

Microhole drilling technology utilizing a golden section search algorithm

A fundamental issue in microhole drilling is that delivering high weight-on-bit (WOB), high torque rotational horsepower to a conventional drill bit does not scale down to the hole sizes necessary to realize the envisioned cost savings An optimization algorithm called a golden section search (GSS) was used to systematically identify the preferred WOB for a given set of conditions. This research focused on implementing and evaluating two low WOB drilling technologies for microhole drilling: - Laser-assisted mechanical drill, which was tested in the laboratory - Lightly modified commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) percussive hammer, which was tested in a limited field test. Data were collected for microhole GSS using WOB optimization via simulation as well as at the Blue Canyon Dome Site in Socorro, NM. Information on the attached files and folders are as follows: - the .tdms files are LabView data files, which can be opened within Excel using a .tdms add-in or using a Matlab .tdms converter - the .tdms_index files are part of the .tdms file structure - sampling rate, column headers, and length data within the .tdms files follow SOP when utilizing Excel and/or Matlab as described above

Thin Film Characterization on Cu/SnAg Solder Interface for 3D Packaging Technologies

Copper is a commonly used interconnect metal in microelectronic interconnects due to its exceptional electrical and thermal properties. Particularly in applications of the 2.5 and 3D integration, Cu is utilized in through-silicon-vias (TSVs) and flip chip interconnects between microelectronic chips for providing miniaturization, lower power and higher performance than current 2D packaging approaches. Furthermore, SnAg capped Cu pillars are a common high-density interconnect technology for flip chip bonding. For these interconnects, specific properties of the Cu surface, such as roughness and cleanliness, are an important factor in the process to ensure quality solder bumps. During electroplating, tight processing parameters must be met so that defects are avoided, and high bump uniformity is achieved. An understanding of the interactions at the solder and Cu pillar interface is needed, based on the electroplating parameters, to determine the best method for populating solder on the wafer surface. In this study, surface treatment techniques such as oxygen plasma cleaning were performed on the Cu surfaces and the SnAg plating chemistry for depositing the solder were evaluated through hull cell testing to qualitatively determine the range of current densities to investigate. It was observed that current density while plating played a large role in solder bump deposition morphology. At the higher current densities greater than 60 mA/cm 2 , bump height non-uniformity and dendritic growth are observed and at lower current densities, less than or equal to 60 mA/cm 2 , uniform, continuous bump height occurred.
