Kinetic inductance measured in a superconducting wire

Ultrasensitive technique to measure kinetic inductance has test specimen included as part of the inductance of a tank circuit of a tunnel diode oscillator. Frequency counter measures shift in frequency of oscillator, caused by changes in inductance. Frequency shift in tank circuit is proportional to change in kinetic inductance

Explosive bonded TZM-wire-reinforced C129Y columbium composites

Technique consists of positioning layers of TZM metal filaments between thin C129Y columbium sheets and joining multiple sheet stacks by single explosive joining operation. Metallurgical bonds are excellent, external heat is not required, process is relatively inexpensive, and resulting composites are considerably stronger than base alloy.

Hot wire measurements of freestream and shock layer disturbances.

Preliminary results of hypersonic helium tunnel investigations of whether disturbance measurements in the freestream alone are adequate to describe the model boundary-layer input disturbances, or whether the model shock wave changes the freestream disturbances before they reach the model boundary layer. It was found that the spectra in the freestream are typical of the wide band turbulence as it exists for sound radiated from a turbulent boundary layer. In the shock layer some redistribution of the spectra seems to occur, especially at the highest stagnation pressure, but the more interesting feature is the gradual development of a discrete component, around 70 kHz in the spectra. This feature is believed to be associated with boundary-layer transition.

Annealing effects in plated-wire memory elements. II - Recrystallization in Permalloy films.

Results of grain-size measurements in Permalloy platings suggest that recrystallization is possible at temperatures as low as 200 C, but that it is an extremely heterogeneous process. No worthwhile correlation was found to exist between observed grain size and magnetic dispersion in samples aged in the temperature range from 180 to 230 C. It is suggested that the magnetic aging which occurs under these conditions may be due to some other diffusion-controlled process than recrystallization; a process such as chemical homogenization is tentatively preferred.

Summary of attitude dynamic analysis for IMP-J wire antenna spacecraft

The work is reported in the determination of acceptable deployment sequences, simulation of EFM antenna deployment, and contingency analysis for the IMP-J S/C. The spacecraft, mission profile and deployment sequences are described along with the simulation of EFM deployment and deployment failure.

Stress-rupture strength and microstructural stability of W-HF-C wire reinforced superalloy composites

W-Hf-C/superalloy composites were found to be potentially useful for turbine blade applications on the basis of stress-rupture strength. The 100-and 1000-hour rupture strengths obtained for 70 volume percent fiber composites tested at 1090 C were 420 and 280 MN/sq m (61,000 and 41,000 psi). The investigation indicated that with better quality fibers, composites having 100- and 1000-hour rupture strengths of 570 and 370 MN/sq m (82,000 and 54,000 psi) may be obtained. Metallographic studies indicated sufficient fiber-matrix compatibility for long time applications at 1090 C for 1000 hours or more.
