Sodium-22 was studied as a tracer for bone mineral metabolism in rats and dogs. When incorporated into bone during growth from birth to adulthood, the bone becomes uniformly tagged with (22)Na which is released through the metabolic turnover of the bone. The (22)Na which is not incorporated in the bone matrix is rapidly excreted within a few days when animals are fed high but nontoxic levels of NaCl. The (22)Na tracer can be used to measure bone mineral loss in animals during space flight and in research on bone disease.
The Task 1 (thirty-six-month) and Task 2 (twelve-month) exposure of composite materials to fuel and fluid environments are reported. Narmco T300/5209 (Task 1) shows no significant degradation. Slightly lower mechanical properties were obtained from fuel/water immersion exposure of this material. Kevlar 49/2544 (also Task 1) exhibits significant drop in short-beam shear when exposed to fuel/water immersion. Task 2 materials (T300/5208, Kevlar 49 fabric/5209, and Kevlar 49 fibers) have not shown any significant mechanical property degradation to date.
An existing, three-dimensional, Eulerian-Lagrangian finite-difference model was modified and used to examine the transport processes of dumped sewage sludge in the New York Bight. Both in situ and laboratory data were utilized in an attempt to approximate model inputs such as mean current speed, horizontal diffusion coefficients, particle size distributions, and specific gravities. The results presented are a quantitative description of the fate of a negatively buoyant sewage sludge plume resulting from continuous and instantaneous barge releases. Concentrations of the sludge near the surface were compared qualitatively with those remotely sensed. Laboratory study was performed to investigate the behavior of sewage sludge dumping in various ambient density conditions.
The magnetic sector boundaries on the sun and in the solar wind are shown to have a high correlation with winter low pressure systems on earth. The vorticity-area index typically declines by about 10% during several days centered on the time when a sector boundary sweeps past the earth. Evidence that both the sector structure and solar activity levels can be understood as being under the influence of the same regular, internal solar mechanism is presented.
The three bright 3-6 keV X-ray sources in Cygnus are examined for regular temporal variability with a 1300-day record from the Ariel 5 All Sky Monitor. The only periods consistently observed are 5.6 days for Cyg X-1, 11.23 days for Cyg X-2, and 4.8 hours for Cyg X-3.
A quantitative approach to modeling human physiological function, with a view toward ultimate application to long duration space flight experiments, was undertaken. Data was obtained on the effect of weightlessness on certain aspects of human physiological function during 1-3 month periods. Modifications in the Guyton model are reviewed. Design considerations for bilateral interface models are discussed. Construction of a functioning whole body model was studied, as well as the testing of the model versus available data.
Modifications were made of the circulatory, fluid, and electrolyte control model which was based on the model of Guyton. The modifications included separate leg compartments and the addition of gravity dependency. It was found that these modifications allowed for more accurate bed rest simulation by simulating changes in the orthostatic gradient and simulating the response to the fluid shifts associated with bed rest.
The TDRS was modeled as a combination of a sun-pointing solar panel and earth-pointing plate. Based on this model, explanations are given for the following orbit determination error characteristics: inherent limits in orbital accuracy, the variation of solar pressure induced orbital error with time of the day of epoch, the insensitivity of range-rate orbits to GM error, and optimum bilateration baseline.
Back-to-back performance tests were run on seven airline low pressure turbine (LPT) modules and four new CF6-6D modules. Back-to-back test cell runs, in which an airline LPT module was directly compared to a new production module, were included. The resulting change, measured in fuel burn, equaled the level of LPT module deterioration. Three of the LPT modules were analytically inspected followed by a back-to-back test cell run to evaluate current refurbishment techniques.
The test procedures and the results obtained during the evaluation of a single-covered liquid solar collector are presented. The tests were performed under outdoor natural conditions. The collector was under stagnation conditions for a total of approximately ten months. The solar collector is a liquid, single-glazed, flat plate collector, and is about 240 inches long, and 3.8 inches in depth.
Several potential calibration updating techniques for satellite-borne instruments for monitoring the stratosphere are reviewed. The Nimbus 4 BUV instrument was checked against an Atmosphere Explorer 5 BUV launched in November 1975. The problems encountered in this exercise are discussed and generalized to establish an initial checklist for future calibration experiments of satellite sensors using Shuttle-borne sensors.
Total ozone observations in the international network have been used as a basis for the analysis of the mean monthly ozone distribution over the globe for the period 1957-1975. It has been found that during the period 1961-1970 the total ozone amount increased in the Northern Hemisphere by about 12 percent and that this increase seems to be significant at all latitudes. Although the data were sparse for the Southern Hemisphere, there did not appear to be any significant ozone changes during the 10 year period. Relatively large geographic variations were found in the ozone trends and it is suggested that these variations are related to large scale changes in the atmospheric circular pattern.
The vertical structure of the nighttime thermosphere and exosphere of Venus was discussed. A comparison of the day and nighttime profiles indicates, contrary to the model of Dickinson and Riley (1977), that densities (principally atomic oxygen) dropped sharply from day to night. It was suggested either that the lower estimates were related to cooler exospheric temperatures at night or that the atomic bulge was flatter than expected at lower altitudes. Large periodic oscillations, in both density and inferred exospheric temperatures, were detected with periods of 5 to 6 days. The possibility that cyclic variations in the thermosphere and stratosphere were caused by planetary-scale waves, propagated upward from the lower atmosphere, was investigated using simultaneous temperature measurements obtained by the Venus radiometric temperature experiment (VORTEX). Inferred exospheric temperatures in the morning were found to be lower than in the evening as if the atmosphere rotated in the direction of the planet's rotation, similar to that of earth. Superrotation of the thermosphere and exosphere was discussed as a possible extension of the 4-day cyclic atmospheric rotation near the cloud tops.

Photometric measurements of the color and albedo of Io during the last 50 years are examined in order to determine the stability of the Ionian surface. Brightness measurements of Io relative to Ganymede show a slight, however inconclusive, increase with time, while light curve amplitudes and shapes are found to agree well during this period. The extent of volcanic activity observed by Voyager 1, however, is shown to be undetectable with the precision attainable by earth-based albedo determinations, and just barely detectable as color changes, which explains the observed photometric stability. Possible mechanisms for the preservation of the observed longitudinal distribution of color on Io are also discussed.
Proton collisional excitation cross sections and rate constants are presented for transitions between the 3P(J) fine-structure levels of the lowest-lying sp configurations in a number of astrophysically important ions belonging to the Be and Mg isoelectronic sequences. The calculations were made by direct integration of the Schroedinger equation resulting from semiclassical Coulomb excitation theory. The cross sections and rate constants for the 3P(J) transitions in the lowest-lying P(2) configurations are expected to be similar to those for the corresponding sp configuration transitions, and this is illustrated for C III. For the high-temperature ion Ca XVII alpha particle excitation is shown to be unimportant for situations involving ordinary values of the He/H abundance ratio. A simple, but apparently accurate method for determining certain radial integrals for low-lying excited configurations is proposed.
