Malfunction of Television Camera Monitor on Command Module

The command module television camera monitor exhibited loss of horizontal synchronization during the initial usage. This condition cleared and performance of the monitor was normal until the press conference telecast during the transearth coast phase. At that time, the monitor had the same horizontal synchronization problem reported during the initial usage. The horizontal hold control adjustment would not correct the condition. The monitor was turned off for approximately 5 minutes, then turned back on, after which the monitor's picture was normal. The loss of horizontal synchronization was most likely caused by either an intermittent condition in the precision voltage regulator circuit assembly in the low voltage power supply, or the shift of the stable range of the horizontal potentiometer setting when warming up after turn-on.

Transient analysis of phase-locked tracking systems in the presence of noise.

This paper is concerned with the problem of obtaining time-dependent solutions to a class of Fokker-Planck equations that arise in the analysis and synthesis of a variety of first-order synchronization systems employing the phase-lock principle. These include the classical sinusoidal phase-locked loop, squaring and Costas loops, data-aided loops, hybrid loops, various symbol synchronizer mechanizations, and tunnel-diode oscillators. By analyzing the spectral properties of the associated time-dependent Fokker-Planck boundary value problem, eigenfunction expansions of the reduced modulo-2-pi phase-error-transition probability-density function are developed for a class of first-order synchronization systems.

Operations analysis (study 2.1). Program SEPSIM (solar electric propulsion stage simulation)

Program SEPSIM is a FORTRAN program which performs deployment, servicing, and retrieval missions to synchronous equatorial orbit using a space tug with a continuous low thrust upper stage known as a solar electric propulsion stage (SEPS). The SEPS ferries payloads back and forth between an intermediate orbit and synchronous orbit, and performs the necessary servicing maneuvers in synchronous orbit. The tug carries payloads between the orbiter and the intermediate orbit, deploys fully fueled SEPS vehicles, and retrieves exhausted SEPS vehicles when, and if, required. The program is presently contained in subroutine form in the Logistical On-orbit VEhicle Servicing (LOVES) Program, but can also be run independently with the addition of a simple driver program.

Propeller modulation effects on a scanning-beam microwave landing system

The results of a systems study and ground test of the effects of propeller modulation on a time-multiplexed, scanning-beam microwave landing system (MLS) are presented. Propeller modulation effects are analyzed in terms of spacing between receiving antenna and propeller, propeller blade width, and propeller speed. Principal study conclusions: (1) scanning beam MLS is susceptible to errors due to synchronous propeller modulation; (2) the number of synchronous interference multiples increases as the number of propeller blades increases and as the data rate decreases; (3) the probability of synchronous interference decreases at higher data rates; and (4) MLS receiver susceptibility to propeller modulation depends upon the dynamic response of the receiver automatic gain control and the respective tracking loops.

On the effect of timing errors in run length codes

Many redundancy removal algorithms employ some sort of run length code. Blocks of timing words are coded with synchronization words inserted between blocks. The probability of incorrectly reconstructing a sample because of a channel error in the timing data is a monotonically nondecreasing function of time since the last synchronization word. In this paper we compute the 'probability that the accumulated magnitude of timing errors equal zero' as a function of time since the last synchronization word for a zero-order predictor (ZOP). The result is valid for any data source that can be modeled by a first-order Markov chain and any digital channel that can be modeled by a channel transition matrix. An example is presented.

Utility of Space Transportation System to Space Communication Community

A potentially cost effective technique was investigated of launching operational satellites into synchronous orbit using the space transportation system (STS). This technique uses an unguided spinning solid rocket motor as the means for boosting a satellite from a low altitude shuttle parking orbit into a synchronous transfer orbit. The spacecraft is then injected into a geosynchronous orbit by an apogee kick motor fired at transfer orbit apogee. The approach is essentially that used on all Delta and Atlas-Centaur launches of synchronous satellites with the shuttle orbiter performing the function of the first two stages of the Delta three stage launch vehicle and the perigee kick motor performing the function of the Delta third state. It is concluded that the STS can be useful to the space communication community as well as to other geostationary satellite system users if the recommended actions are implemented.

Renal electrolyte circadian rhythms - Independence from feeding and activity patterns

Experiments were conducted on six unanesthetized chair-acclimatized adult male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) weighing 600-900 g to determine whether internal synchronization is the result of simple passive dependence of renal excretory rhythms on endogenous rhythms of those variable that influence electrolyte excretion such as dietary intake and muscular activity. Independence of the urinary rhythms from diurnal variations in feeding, drinking, and activity was secured by depriving the animals of food, water, and training them to perform a two-hourly schedule of feeding, drinking, and activity throughout day and night. Results indicate that the internal synchronization which is normally observed between the behavioral and urinary rhythms cannot be explained by any direct dependence of renal function on behavioral patterns. The most probable mechanism for circadian internal synchronization is that the various behavioral and renal rhythms are controlled by potentially independent separate oscillators which are normally kept in synchrony with one another.

The Space Shuttle Main Engine High-Pressure Fuel Turbopump rotordynamic instability problem

The SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engine) HPFTP (High-Pressure Fuel Turbopump) has been subject to a rotordynamic instability problem, characterized by large and damaging subsynchronous whirling motion. The original design of the HPFTP (from a rotordynamic viewpoint) and the evolution of the HPFTP subsynchronous whirl problem are reviewed. The models and analysis which have been developed and utilized to explain the HPFTP instability and improve its stability performance are also reviewed. Elements of the rotordynamic model which are discussed in detail include the following: (a) hydrodynamic forces due to seals, (b) internal rotor damping, (c) bearing and casing support stiffness asymmetry, and (d) casing dynamics. The stability and synchronous response characteristics of the following two design alternatives are compared: (a) a 'stiff' symmetric bearing support design and (b) a damped asymmetric stiffness design. With appropriate interstage seal designs, both designs are shown, in theory to provide substantially improved stability and synchronous response characteristics in comparison to the original design. The asymmetric design is shown to have better stability and synchronous response characteristics than the stiffly supported design.

Micropulsations in the morning sector. III - Simultaneous ground-satellite observations of 10- to 45-s period waves near L = 6.6

A search for simultaneous 10- to 45-s waves at the synchronous orbit at the location of ATS 1 and at Tungsten, Northwest Territories, Canada (near the foot of the ATS 1 field line), during 1969 resulted in the identification of only one event. This event occurred near 0900-1000 LT and was identified as a Pc 3 event. By combining 1967 data from College, Alaska (near the same L shell as ATS 1), with ATS 1 data, 90 simultaneous events were identified. Analysis of 60 of these events led to the conclusion that Pi 1 are rarely, if ever, observed on the magnetic equator at synchronous orbit, even when Pi 1 activity is present on the ground near the conjugate point. Pc 3, on the other hand, are common at synchronous orbit. A statistical study of the Pc 3 occurring at ATS 1 during simultaneous College wave activity indicated characteristics similar to those observed at ATS 6.

Interleaving of Reed-Solomon Viterbi concatenated coding channel

Two interleaving schemes are presented for R-S Viterbi concatenated coding channels and several R-S code array synchronization configurations are investigated. A procedure for obtaining synchronization sequences for the R-S code array under specified conditions is developed and used to identify sequences with desirable properties. The two interleaving schemes are found to be comparable in terms of array synchronization.

Simultaneous ground-satellite observations of Pi 2 magnetic pulsations and their high frequency enhancement

Pi 2 magnetic pulsations are a frequent occurrence at the earth's surface and have been shown to be clearly correlated with substorm expansion onset. These pulsations are also observed in space at synchronous orbit at the same time as they are seen on the ground at the satellite conjugate point. This brief report describes three days in 1969 on which Pi 2 magnetic pulsations were simultaneously observed at the synchronous satellite ATS 1 and at Tungsten, N.W.T., Canada, near the foot of the ATS 1 magnetic field line. These Pi 2 bursts all exhibit the characteristic waveform and frequency, as well as an 0.3 Hz enhancement, at both locations. This high frequency enhancement appears to be an integral part of Pi 2 bursts both on the surface and at synchronous orbit and should be considered in the development of models of generation mechanisms.

Tests of an overrunning clutch in a wind turbine

An overrunning clutch that slipped freely under reverse torque was tested in the drive train of the Mod-0 wind turbine. In low variable wind conditions, the clutch engaged and disengaged smoothly without perturbation or oscillations. The clutch permitted the generator to be connected to the line using a relay instead of an automatic synchronizer. The alternator was connected to the line when the rpm reached 95% of synchronous speed and it motored to synchronous speed in about 0.15 seconds with a momentary power spike of 50 kW. The performance of the clutch was the same with and without the fluid coupling. The ideal power with the clutch was 5 to 7 kW compared to up to 50 kW without the clutch. The overrunning clutch merits consideration in future wind turbine designs as a means of simplifying the control system, increasing energy capture, and increasing the life of blades and electrical switch gear.

Timing performance of phased-locked loops in optical pulse position modulation communication systems

An optical digital communication system requires that an accurate clock signal be available at the receiver for proper synchronization with the transmitted signal. Phase synchronization is especially critical in M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) systems where the optimum decision scheme is an energy detector which compares the energy in each of M time slots to decide which of M possible words was sent. Timing errors cause energy spillover into adjacent time slots (a form of intersymbol interference) so that only a portion of the signal energy may be attributed to the correct time slot. This effect decreases the effective signal, increases the effective noise, and increases the probability of error. A timing subsystem for a satellite-to-satellite optical PPM communication link is simulated. The receiver employs direct photodetection, preprocessing of the detected signal, and a phase-locked loop for timing synchronization. The variance of the relative phase error is examined under varying signal strength conditions as an indication of loop performance, and simulation results are compared to theoretical calculations.

Comparison of longwave diurnal models applied to simulations of the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment

The Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) is a multisatellite experiment which is to be implemented in the mid 1980s. The experiment involves a utilization of instruments on one or more sun-synchronous satellites in the NOAA series, and the employment of a dedicated spacecraft, the ERBS, in a 57 deg orbit. One of the objectives of ERBE is related to an improvement of knowledge regarding the diurnal variability in the earth's radiation balance. In the present investigation, satellite samples of longwave (LW) radiation over land are simulated for both sun-synchronous and non-sun-synchronous orbits. Three different LW diurnal models are then applied to the sampled data, and the resulting modeled monthly net LW radiant exitances are compared against reference values based on complete hourly sampling of the area for a month. The results demonstrate the general usefulness of a trigonometric diurnal LW model for land regions with daytime heating trends.

Basic principles of coaxial launch technology

Already in the 1930s, a discrete-coil mechanically synchronized launcher was built. At the present time, research is almost entirely directed towards railguns. However, although coaxial accelerators are more complex than railguns, they have certain unique advantages. Some of these advantages are related to the absence of physical contact requirements with the projectile, the possibility of a scale-up to very large projectile size, and the availability of up to 100 times more thrust for a given current. The price of the advantages is the need for a drive current in the form of pulses synchronized precisely with transit of each projectile coil through each drive coil. At high velocities, high voltages are required, and high voltage switching represents the technology limit on launch velocity. Attention is given to inductance gradients, the double hump, methods of excitation, methods of synchronization, projectile configuration, energy supply, fundamental limits, trends, and research needs.

A means for stationing additional geosynchronous satellites and space ladder

A practical method is analytically shown for multiplying the number of orbital slots for synchronous satellites. This is by radially tethering satellites above the synchronous orbit (forces outwards) balanced to satellites below this orbit (forces inwards). The term practical applies because the tether tension force is of second order smallness. Thus, several thousand miles of synchronous satellites can be radiated along a small tether line sized for tension of about one percent of a satellite weight. A vertical tether line also provides a track for transport, that is, a ladder or elevator. Analysis for an optimized diameter tether line is developed which is particularly effective when the tether, line is extended to the ground, thus, making a space ladder. Mars is the best candidate for a space ladder. With the optimized tether the total system mass is minimum when the outer satellite is far out. Tethered satellites have G-forces.

Orbiting hydrogen-maser clock and frequency standard communicate by microwave links with Earth stations using hydrogen masers as local clocks. Pulsed-laser time-transfer sub-system also operated concurrently, either synchronized or unsynchronized with microwave subsystems.

A Note on Jupiter's Gossamer Ring

The newly discovered gossamer ring of Jupiter, composed largely of micron-sized grains, exhibits a significant peak very near the synchronous radius. It is believed that this peak is associated with an unobserved source consisting of large bodies that straddle the synchronous orbit. An alternative evolutionary mechanism is offered, which is the gyrophase drift towards the synchronous orbit, of fine grains, which necessarily are electrostatically charged within the Jovian magnetosphere.
