Computer program documentation for the dynamic analysis of a noncontacting mechanical face seal

A computer program is presented which achieves a numerical solution for the equations of motion of a noncontacting mechanical face seal. The flexibly-mounted primary seal ring motion is expressed by a set of second order differential equations for three degrees of freedom. These equations are reduced to a set of first order equations and the GEAR software package is used to solve the set of first order equations. Program input includes seal design parameters and seal operating conditions. Output from the program includes velocities and displacements of the seal ring about the axis of an inertial reference system. One example problem is described.

Equivalent source modeling of the main field using Magsat data

A graphic software package was developed to plot the dipole positions for a particular model on a world map. An arrow is drawn at each dipole in the direction of the horizontal magnetization vector, with length proportional to the horizontal magnitude. A contouring package represents the radical component of the magnetization vector. Based on quiet Magsat data, several dipole models were derived. These are being verified against each other and against MGST (6/80) data set as to goodness of fit and stability of solution. The spatial power spectra computed from spherical harmonic expansions of the dipole models is being analyzed relative to crustal and core content. The power spectra for one of the dipole models and a spherical harmonic model based on Magsat data through degree and order 23 is presented.

The application of LANDSAT remote sensing technology to natural resources management. Section 1: Introduction to VICAR - Image classification module. Section 2: Forest resource assessment of Humboldt County.

A teaching module on image classification procedures using the VICAR computer software package was developed to optimize the training benefits for users of the VICAR programs. The field test of the module is discussed. An intensive forest land inventory strategy was developed for Humboldt County. The results indicate that LANDSAT data can be computer classified to yield site specific forest resource information with high accuracy (82%). The "Douglas-fir 80%" category was found to cover approximately 21% of the county and "Mixed Conifer 80%" covering about 13%. The "Redwood 80%" resource category, which represented dense old growth trees as well as large second growth, comprised 4.0% of the total vegetation mosaic. Furthermore, the "Brush" and "Brush-Regeneration" categories were found to be a significant part of the vegetative community, with area estimates of 9.4 and 10.0%.

Investigation of Antarctic crust and upper mantle using Magsat and other geophysical data

The compatibility of Univac-formatted tapes with the in-house computer was investigated and a decision was made to switch to IBM-formatted tapes. A NASA software package was adapted for use with data when they become available. Auxiliary geophysical and geological data and literature continue to be compiled and studied so that when data tapes arrive, real analysis may begin.

Solar Power Satellite antenna phase control system hardware simulation, phase 4. Volume 3: SOLARSIM users manual

Documentation of the interactive software package designed to predict the effect of certain electrical and mechanical imperfections on the performance of the SPS system is presented. The capabilities of the SOLARSIM program to quantify the spacetenna performance parameter values are described. The SOLARSIM package can compute the RMS pointing error, title effects, MPTX code tracking loop performance, MPTX carrier tracking loop performance, averaged power pattern, and the power transfer efficiency.

Documentation for the machine-readable character coded version of the SKYMAP catalogue

The SKYMAP catalogue is a compilation of astronomical data prepared primarily for purposes of attitude guidance for satellites. In addition to the SKYMAP Master Catalogue data base, a software package of data base management and utility programs is available. The tape version of the SKYMAP Catalogue, as received by the Astronomical Data Center (ADC), contains logical records consisting of a combination of binary and EBCDIC data. Certain character coded data in each record are redundant in that the same data are present in binary form. In order to facilitate wider use of all SKYMAP data by the astronomical community, a formatted (character) version was prepared by eliminating all redundant character data and converting all binary data to character form. The character version of the catalogue is described. The document is intended to fully describe the formatted tape so that users can process the data problems and guess work; it should be distributed with any character version of the catalogue.

Optimum shape of a Kirkpatrick-Baez X-ray reflector supported at discrete points for on-axis performance

A method is proposed for optimizing the on-axis resolution of a Kirkpatrick-Baez reflecting element. The proposed procedure provides a way to determine the location of each of the 11,200 support points (175 different points plus repeats) by using a computer-assisted structural-optical software package. This automated procedure will make it possible to determine the optical characteristics of an entire telescope module consisting of seventy mirrors.

Kinematic properties of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft in steady coordinated high-g turns

An analytical approach to the study of flight dynamics of aircraft operating in a high-angle-of-attack flight regime and of helicopters operating in extreme thrust conditions is presented. Steady coordinated high-g turns are used to establish the initial equilibrium flight conditions near stall angles of attack. The kinematic properties of the aircraft in steady coordinated turns are examined: in high-g turns, pitch rate (independent of the angle of attack) is of a much larger magnitude than roll and yaw rate; a substantial roll rate is found to develop in steep turns for all angles of attack; the angle of attack also has a significant effect on the pitch attitude, with decreasing influence as the normal load factor increases. The exact small disturbance equations of motion of the aircraft in general steady turns are also developed for application to both rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft in extreme conditions. These equations are in a first-order, vector-matrix format, and are thus compatible with many efficient software packages developed in modern system theory.

Track train dynamics analysis and test program: Methodology development for the derailment safety analysis of six-axle locomotives

The operational safety of six axle locomotives is analyzed. A locomotive model with corresponding data on suspension characteristics, a method of track defect characterization, and a method of characterizing operational safety are used. A user oriented software package was developed as part of the methodology and was used to study the effect (on operational safety) of various locomotive parameters and operational conditions such as speed, tractive effort, and track curvature. The operational safety of three different locomotive designs was investigated.

Dynamics Explorer Science Data Processing System

The Dynamics Explorer project has acquired the ground data processing system from the Atmosphere Explorer project to provide a central computer facility for the data processing, data management and data analysis activities of the investigators. Access to this system is via remote terminals at the investigators' facilities, which provide ready access to the data sets derived from groups of instruments on both spacecraft. The original system has been upgraded with both new hardware and enhanced software systems. These new systems include color and grey scale graphics terminals, an augmentation computer, micrographics facility, a versatile data base with a directory and data management system, and graphics display software packages.

Using computer graphics to enhance astronaut and systems safety

The Operator Station Design System (OSDS), a technique of applied computer graphics featuring a flexible interactive software package, is presented in terms of man-machine analyses, flight operations, and systems engineering. In man-machine analyses, the OSDS was used to determine if viewing from the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System was satisfactory and to identify requirements for a pallet-mounted television camera. In another study, extravehicular activity was analyzed using the example of emergency access to latches should they fail in orbit. In terms of flight operations, OSDS can be used to evaluate array monitoring of a solar array power system complex and to provide animated scenarios of mission operations. The most important application of OSDS is in relation to systems engineering, as OSDS can be used to analyze spacecraft and payload design and integration. Payload configurations are included.

Fitting multidimensional splines using statistical variable selection techniques

This report demonstrates the successful application of statistical variable selection techniques to fit splines. Major emphasis is given to knot selection, but order determination is also discussed. Two FORTRAN backward elimination programs using the B-spline basis were developed, and the one for knot elimination is compared in detail with two other spline-fitting methods and several statistical software packages. An example is also given for the two-variable case using a tensor product basis, with a theoretical discussion of the difficulties of their use.
