24.1.3.1 - Verification of Spent Fuel Inside Dry Storage Casks by Fast/Epi-thermal Neutron Mapping

Development of a spent-fuel verification method based upon positional measurement of fast neutrons emitted from the top surface of the dry storage casks. A proof-of-principle field test on a partially loaded spent-fuel cask will be conducted by measuring the fast neutron flux on the top of the cask as a function of position using a single detector. If a useful verification signature is demonstrated, a multi-detector scanning array will be built and tested in FY2021 to demonstrate a practical rapid verification system in FY2022.

Mapping Stochastic Devices to Probabilistic Algorithms

Probabilistic and Bayesian neural networks have long been proposed as a method to incorporate uncertainty about the world (both in training data and operation) into artificial intelligence applications. One approach to making a neural network probabilistic is to leverage a Monte Carlo sampling approach that samples a trained network while incorporating noise. Such sampling approaches for neural networks have not been extensively studied due to the prohibitive requirement of many computationally expensive samples. While the development of future microelectronics platforms that make this sampling more efficient is an attractive option, it has not been immediately clear how to sample a neural network and what the quality of random number generation should be. This research aimed to start addressing these two fundamental questions by examining basic “off the shelf” neural networks can be sampled through a few different mechanisms (including synapse “dropout” and neuron “dropout”) and examine how these sampling approaches can be evaluated both in terms of evaluating algorithm effectiveness and the required quality of random numbers.

The Pantex Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) [Slides]

The LMA can pick up the smallest static discharge ongoing inside developing thunderstorms that could be the precursor to a future cloud-to-cloud or cloud-to-ground lightning strike. Research done at Pantex in 2020 of 20 different storms from February through November showed an average lead time of around 20 minutes from when “source densities” were detected inside developing thunderstorms over the Texas Panhandle to when the first cloud-to-cloud or cloud-to-ground lightning strike occurred.

Map Applications to Target Exascale Architecture with Machine-Specific Performance Analysis, Including Challenges and Projections

This Exascale Computing Project (ECP) milestone report summarizes the status of all 30 ECP Applications Development (AD) subprojects at the end of FY20. In October and November of 2020, a comprehensive assessment of AD projects was conducted by the ECP leadership. Reviews occurred virtually between October 27, 2020 and November 12, 2020. The review committee—consisting of the AD lead, deputy, and L3—was tasked with evaluating each subproject’s progress in porting their codes to early exascale architectures considered precursors to the planned exascale machines. This includes characterizing which modules have been ported to multi-accelerator nodes, initial performance analyses, the status of software integration, and a current vision of successes, obstacles, and next steps. As such, this report contains not only an accurate snapshot of each subproject’s current status but also represents an unprecedentedly broad account of experiences in porting large scientific applications to next-generation high-performance computing architectures.

Mapping the Opportunity Space to Model the Circular Economy Using Tools Funded by the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

An increasing rate of material consumption and a growing population mean that the Earth's supply of natural resources is witnessing an unsustainable and unprecedented demand. This forces us to find solutions that ensure the availability of resources for sustenance of our society in the years to come. Actors from various backgrounds are addressing these challenges from their own perspectives: engineers are developing efficient manufacturing processes, designers are creating lightweight and durable products, educators are incorporating sustainable thinking in their curricula, policymakers are finding interdisciplinary solutions that benefit society at large, etc. Circular economy (CE) is one such approach to resource use that aims to move away from the linear material use framework of "take-make-waste" to a more circular and interdependent system where product, material and resource use is maximized to avoid unnecessary social, economic, and environmental costs. The purpose of this report is to explain how to approach evaluating the circular economy and to help researchers identify existing tools that can be used or that can serve as starting points for their research needs.

In-Situ Spatial Mapping of Hydrogen in Yttrium Hydrides at LANSCE

This report summarizes the neutron imaging techniques and experimental activities performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) with the main goal of measuring temperature driven hydrogen diffusion within bulk-yttrium hydride (YH x ) materials. The experimental results and technique developments reported herein support the US Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy’s (DOE-NE) Microreactor Program under Technology Maturation. In particular, the critical need to experimentally validate and verify hydrogen-diffusion models of metal hydrides used in hightemperature microreactor designs is addressed by means of high-spatial-resolution neutron imaging coupled with custom-built and application-specific furnaces. These capabilities were designed to apply large temperature gradients across centimeter-sized YH x pellets to simulate conditions faced in the microreactor environment. Neutron imaging, combined with in-situ sample heating, enables near real-time tracking of hydrogen diffusion in YH x on the sub-millimeter scale. In this report, an overview of neutron imaging methodology and technologies are given in the context of recent spatial measures of hydrogen concentrations in similar metals hydrides. Additionally, the commissioning and operation of a custom-built compact dual-zone furnace is given along with details on the first two in-situ heating measurements of YH x performed over the 2020 and 2021 LANSCE operation cycles. In parallel with in-situ heating measurements, neutron computed tomography scans were performed to visualize hydrogen aggregates in post-heated YH x samples. Analysis and results from these neutron imaging measurements are given along with outlooks and plans for improving future hydrogen diffusion measurements at LANSCE.

On the specificity between mapping of initial and final states of the magneto Rayleigh-Taylor instability

In this LDRD we investigated the application of machine learning methods to understand dimensionality reduction and evolution of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI). As part of the project, we undertook a significant literature review to understand current analytical theory and machine learning based methods to treat evolution of this instability. We note that we chose to refocus on assessing the hydrodynamic RTI as opposed to the magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability originally proposed. This choice enabled utilizing a wealth of analytic test cases and working with relatively fast running open-source simulations of single-mode RTI. This greatly facilitated external collaboration with URA summer fellowship student, Theodore Broeren. In this project we studied the application of methods from dynamical systems learning and traditional regression methods to recover behavior of RTI ranging from the fully nonlinear to weakly nonlinear (wNL) regimes. Here we report on two of the tested methods SINDy and a more traditional regression-based approach inspired by analytic wNL theory with which we had the most success. We conclude with a discussion of potential future extensions to this work that may improve our understanding from both theoretical and phenomenological perspectives.
