Low-Temperature Electrochemical Wastewater Oxidation

Here, we demonstrated the Clean Sustainable Electrochemical Treatment (CleanSET) process that enables the distributed clean-up of biomass-derived wastewater while simultaneously generating hydrogen (H 2 ). The specific goal of this project is to 1) demonstrate the selective removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total carbon (TC), and total nitrogen (TN) of different wastewaters, 2) optimize the electrode composition to improve electrochemical performance, and 3) perform a high-level techno-economic analysis to obtain levelized costs of disposal (LCOD) .

IER-479/547: Low-Temperature TEX Surrogate Testing and Reflector Design [Slides]

This lecture includes a look into progress in surrogate testing. This includes a new chiller that has been fabricated and testing that has resumed. Additional tests are being conducted, including: using formed aluminum gaskets, extended testing with natural uranium, testing with pseudo-spindle, testing with no vacuum. This lecture includes a look into the Reflector Design. Results for detailed model are consistent with results presented in CED-2. Calculations provide flexibility in the physical design of the reflectors (e.g. reflector segment widths and heights). Provided initial CAD models of reflector components.

Gain Stability of Hamamatsu R5912-MOD Photo-Multipliers at Low Temperature

The Photon Detection System is a crucial component of the ICARUS detector in the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). It consists of 360 Photo Multiplier Tubes (PMTs) 8” Hamamatsu R5912-MOD and, since June 2020, it has been operated at the liquid Argon cryogenic temperature. During these years, the PMTs have shown gain losses as an aging effect. Using a climatic chamber at the INFN Sezione di Catania, we confirmed a stable gain for a single PMT 8” Hamamatsu 5912-MOD when operated at room temperature, and a persistent gain loss at temperatures around -70°C, although far from the liquid Argon one. No gain recovery was obtained bringing the PMT back to room temperature. We suspect that dynode deterioration due to temperature gradient plays a significant role in this phenomenon. During our test, the PMT was illuminated by a 520 nm laser source and operated in current mode. The laser beam was split into two optical fibers, the first one transmitting light through Neutral Density filters and then diffusing it over the surface of the PMT photocathode. The other optical fiber was used for an independent reference measurement of the injected light via a bolometric photodetector. In this presentation, the main technical characteristics of the measurement system are shown together with preliminary results which need further investigation to elucidate the underlying mechanisms driving the gain loss and to propose new mitigation strategies.

Low Temperature CO2 Capture from an NGCC Flue Gas Using a Magnetically Stabilized, Inductively Heated Fluidized Bed Reactor

The lab sorbent testing finalized the sorbent composition and operating conditions for the integrated unit. The bench unit design included COMSOL simulation to finalize the coil design and select initial operating conditions of the power supply system. Fluidized bed testing with the induction heating verified that a heating efficiency of up to 90% can be achieved. The integrated bench unit operations provided valuable data confirming the feasibility of using induction heating for the desorption of CO2. Major challenge observed was the limited working capacity of the sorbent, requiring additional development in future projects. In addition, a large-scale reactor demonstration is required to mitigate the risk of uniform temperature distribution and heating efficiency over a large cross-sectional area when using induction heating.

Electrocatalyst Engineering and Device Benchmarking for Low Temperature CO2 Electrolysis

This oral presentation is for an invited talk in Division of Energy and Fuels, Symposium: "CO2 Conversion and Utilization-II: Electrochemical CO2 Conversion to Fuels and Valuable Chemicals" at ACS Spring 2025 (March 23-27, 2025) in San Diego, CA. The presentation will primarily discuss the crucial role of electrocatalyst design in the CO2 conversion to sustainable, carbon-neutral gas and liquid products. Some preliminary benchmarking studies of off-the-shelf electrocatalysts will be also shown in different device configurations to achieve good selectivity at industrially relevant current densities.

A Comparison of Novel Woodstove Catalytic Combustors to Improve Low Temperature Light off and Catalyst Stability at High Temperatures and Corrosive Environments, Including Stability of Catalytic Combustors used in Coastal Environments

Wood heaters with catalytic combustors often emit higher levels of particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at startup before the catalytic combustor is at operational temperature. This project aims to advance wood heater catalytic combustor technology by studying degradation mechanisms in failed field catalysts and using those insights to develop an improved catalytic combustor. Findings will provide critical insights into the degradation mechanisms of wood heater catalytic combustors and inform the design of catalysts that deliver improved efficiency, durability, and performance compared to current commercial products. The outcomes of this project will not only improve catalytic combustor technology but also contribute to operational guidelines to extend catalyst lifetimes.

Low Temperature Cyclic Deformation Behavior of Ultrafine-grained Pure Magnesium (Final Technical Report)

The primary goal of the project is to explore the fundamental deformation and fatigue failure mechanisms for magnesium with a hexagonal close packed (HCP) crystal structure. It is important to perform the project for several reasons. Firstly, magnesium is the lightest structural metal and its application in various structural components can reduce the final component weight.

Rotating Disk Electrode Standardization and Best Practices in Acidic Oxygen Evolution for Low-Temperature Electrolysis

Efforts in oxygen evolution catalyst development have significantly increased and often use rotating disk electrode half-cells to evaluate intrinsic kinetics and screen materials for short-term durability. Standardizing rotating disk electrode test protocols is critical to experimental accuracy, to realistically assess their potential impact at a device level and to assess how different catalyst approaches and concepts are prioritized. The goal of this study is to provide standardized test protocols and suggest best practices to help reduce variability in ex situ materials characterization in the broader community. Specifically, these protocols focus on test cleanliness and materials choices, including how electrodes are prepared and tested, and the impact on activity observations.

Dataset, Code, and Models for Training Deep Learning Potentials for Low Temperature Plasma-Surface Interactions

This repository contains datasets, training scripts, and finished models, and test simulations used in the development of DeepREBO— a machine-learned interatomic potential trained to emulate the REBO2 empirical potential. The data was generated to study deep potential development for simulations of plasma-surface interactions. It uses an active learning framework, starting from a minimal dataset and iteratively expanding it. Included are those generated datasets, the trained models, and simulations used to evaluate the performance of the training process. This resource supports reproducibility and provides a reference framework for training deep potentials in plasma-surface interaction studies.
