Numerical solution for the interaction of shock wave with laminar boundary layer in two-dimensional flow on a flat plate

The finite difference computation method was investigated for solving problems of interaction between a shock wave and a laminar boundary layer, through solution of the complete Navier-Stokes equations. This method provided excellent solutions, was simple to perform and needed a relatively short solution time. A large number of runs for various flow conditions could be carried out from which the interaction characteristics and principal factors that influence interaction could be studied.

Flat-plate solar array project: Experimental process system development unit for producing semiconductor-grade silicon using the silane-to-silicon process

The process technology for the manufacture of semiconductor-grade silicon in a large commercial plant by 1986, at a price less than $14 per kilogram of silicon based on 1975 dollars is discussed. The engineering design, installation, checkout, and operation of an Experimental Process System Development unit was discussed. Quality control of scaling-up the process and an economic analysis of product and production costs are discussed.

Flat-plate solar array project process development area, process research of non-CZ silicon material

The program is designed to investigate the fabrication of solar cells on N-type base material by a simultaneous diffusion of N-type and P-type dopants to form an P(+)NN(+) structure. The results of simultaneous diffusion experiments are being compared to cells fabricated using sequential diffusion of dopants into N-base material in the same resistivity range. The process used for the fabrication of the simultaneously diffused P(+)NN(+) cells follows the standard Westinghouse baseline sequence for P-base material except that the two diffusion processes (boron and phosphorus) are replaced by a single diffusion step. All experiments are carried out on N-type dendritic web grown in the Westinghouse pre-pilot facility. The resistivities vary from 0.5 (UC OMEGA)cm to 5 (UC OMEGA)cm. The dopant sources used for both the simultaneous and sequential diffusion experiments are commercial metallorganic solutions with phosphorus or boron components. After these liquids are applied to the web surface, they are baked to form a hard glass which acts as a diffusion source at elevated temperatures. In experiments performed thus far, cells produced in sequential diffusion tests have properties essentially equal to the baseline N(+)PP(+) cells. However, the simultaneous diffusions have produced cells with much lower IV characteristics mainly due to cross-doping of the sources at the diffusion temperature. This cross-doping is due to the high vapor pressure phosphorus (applied as a metallorganic to the back surface) diffusion through the SiO2 mask and then acting as a diffusant source for the front surface.

Intermediate load modules for test and evaluation: Flat-Plate Solar Array Project

Two versions of a 36 stainless steel solar module were built. The first version was built as a commercial module for marine applications and was purchased for evaluation by JPL. Design deficiencies were identified as a result of the evaluation. The second version was built and the improvements that resulted from design changes are described. Assembly problems, electrical performance, and qualification test results are provided.

Interaction of part-through cracks in a flat plate

The accuracy of the line spring model is determined. The effect of interaction between two and three cracks is investigated, and extensive numerical results which may be useful in applications are provided. Line spring model with Reissner's plate theory is formulated to be used for any number and configurations of cracks provided that there is symmetry. This model is used to find stress intensity factors for elliptic internal cracks, elliptic edge cracks and two opposite elliptic edge cracks. Despite the simplicity of the line spring model, the results are found to be close.

Flat-plate transition

A new research effort was undertaken to build a boundary-layer transition tunnel. This facility only recently became operational. The data obtained so far are merely qualitative. The main goal is to predict heat transfer given any combination of factors such as pressure gradient, turbulence level, Reynolds number, or intermittency factor. The boundary-layer transition tunnel is a closed-loop tunnel that controls the turbulence level, velocity and temperature of the air within it. Problems associated with the operation of this tunnel are examined.

Most desirable terrain, e.g., flat vs valley location, part 5.1B

Ground reflections which are similar for all (Yagi) elements of a phased array and change the radiation pattern of the single elements are discussed. This consequently yields a change of the radiation pattern of the entire array. It is assumed that the radiation pattern of a Yagi antenna can be treated in a good approximation for the present purpose, similar to the pattern of a single dipole, if one confines to radiation angles which are roughly perpendicular to the main beam of the Yagi antenna.

Measurements of vertical velocity over flat terrain by ST radar and other related uses of the radar data set

The need to study vertical velocity measurements from an ST radar located on the plains, far from the mountains is pointed out, as all presently available clear-air radars are located in or near mountains. The construction and operation of a VHF Doppler (ST) radar in the midwestern part of the United States to make meteorological measurements is also discussed. While primary interest is in measuring the synoptic-scale vertical velocities in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, it should be stressed, however, that the radar data set generated during the radar experiment would have many other valuable uses of interest to us and others some of whom are listed below. The required radar parameters, approximate costs, and recommended mode of operation are also detailed.

Flat-plate solar array project process development area process research of non-CZ silicon material

Three sets of samples were laser processed and then cell processed. The laser processing was carried out on P-type and N-type web at laser power levels from 0.5 joule/sq cm to 2.5 joule/sq cm. Six different liquid dopants were tested (3 phosphorus dopants, 2 boron dopants, 1 aluminum dopant). The laser processed web strips were fabricated into solar cells immediately after laser processing and after various annealing cycles. Spreading resistance measurements made on a number of these samples indicate that the N(+)P (phosphorus doped) junction is approx. 0.2 micrometers deep and suitable for solar cells. However, the P(+)N (or P(+)P) junction is very shallow ( 0.1 micrometers) with a low surface concentration and resulting high resistance. Due to this effect, the fabricated cells are of low efficiency. The maximum efficiency attained was 9.6% on P-type web after a 700 C anneal. The main reason for the low efficiency was a high series resistance in the cell due to a high resistance back contact.

Postbuckling of flat unstiffened graphite-epoxy plates loaded in shear

An experimental and analytical study was conducted of the postbuckling response and failure characteristics of 8-, 16-, and 24-ply unstiffened graphite/epoxy plates under shear loading, including orthotropic, quasi-orthotropic, entirely +, -45 deg ply, and (0/90)s-class plates. Postbuckling stiffness is noted to be influenced by the stacking sequence and by the inplane boundary condition imposed on the test section by a picture frame test fixture. The ratio of failure load to buckling load was higher for specimens that had higher width-to-thickness ratios. It is noted that high displacement gradients may induce transverse shear stresses, and that delamination was the failure mechanism for many of the 8-ply specimens. An adhesive failure between the composite specimen and metal edge reinforcements initiated failure of the 16- and 24-ply specimens.

Data Descriptions and Vertical Structure Plots for Mean, Diurnal, and Semidurnal Components of Eastward and Northward (ordered by Latitude). Mean Winds and Tides over Poker Flat, Alaska (65 Deg N, 147 Deg W), During November 1981

The mean zonal and meridional winds and the amplitude and phase structures for the tidal harmonics for the month of November, 1981 are given. The mean winds are weak westerlies and weak southerlies. The westerlies are approximately 10 ms (-1) lower than those during November 1980 and 1982. The diurnal amplitudes are small in both the zonal and meridional wind components. The diurnal phase structures are characteristic of a propagating wave having a ertical wavelength of approximately 50 km. The semidiurnal tidal harmonic amplitudes are slightly larger than the diurnal amplitudes. However, the phase structures are different for the zonal and meridional components. The meridional phase structure appears evanescent. The zonal phase structure has a phase reversal at 88 km with downward phase progression below that level and upward phase progression above that level. The vertical wavelength is roximately 12 km. This short vertical wavelength occurs during other months of the year but longer wavelengths are more common.

A sensitivity analysis of central flat-plate photovoltaic systems and implications for national photovoltaics program planning

The sensitivity of the National Photovoltaic Research Program goals to changes in individual photovoltaic system parameters is explored. Using the relationship between lifetime cost and system performance parameters, tests were made to see how overall photovoltaic system energy costs are affected by changes in the goals set for module cost and efficiency, system component costs and efficiencies, operation and maintenance costs, and indirect costs. The results are presented in tables and figures for easy reference.
