Kullback–Leibler Divergence of an Open-Queuing Network of a Cell-Signal-Transduction Cascade

Queuing networks (QNs) are essential models in operations research, with applications in cloud computing and healthcare systems. However, few studies have analyzed the cell’s biological signal transduction using QN theory. This study entailed the modeling of signal transduction as an open Jackson’s QN (JQN) to theoretically determine cell signal transduction, under the assumption that the signal mediator queues in the cytoplasm, and the mediator is exchanged from one signaling molecule to another through interactions between the signaling molecules. Each signaling molecule was regarded as a network node in the JQN. The JQN Kullback–Leibler divergence (KLD) was defined using the ratio of the queuing time (λ) to the exchange time (μ), λ/μ. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal-cascade model was applied, and the KLD rate per signal-transduction-period was shown to be conserved when the KLD was maximized. Our experimental study on MAPK cascade supported this conclusion. This result is similar to the entropy-rate conservation of chemical kinetics and entropy coding reported in our previous studies. Thus, JQN can be used as a novel framework to analyze signal transduction.

Probing UV-sensitive Pathways for CN and HCN Formation in Protoplanetary Disks with the Hubble Space Telescope

The UV radiation field is a critical regulator of gas-phase chemistry in surface layers of disks around young stars. In an effort to understand the relationship between photocatalyzing UV radiation fields and gas emission observed at infrared and submillimeter wavelengths, we present an analysis of new and archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Spitzer, ALMA, IRAM, and SMA data for five targets in the Lupus cloud complex and 14 systems in Taurus-Auriga. The HST spectra were used to measure Lyα and far-UV (FUV) continuum fluxes reaching the disk surface, which are responsible for dissociating relevant molecular species (e.g., HCN, N{sub 2}). Semi-forbidden C ii] λ2325 and UV-fluorescent H{sub 2} emission were also measured to constrain inner disk populations of C{sup +} and vibrationally excited H{sub 2}. We find a significant positive correlation between 14 μm HCN emission and fluxes from the FUV continuum and C ii] λ2325, consistent with model predictions requiring N{sub 2} photodissociation and carbon ionization to trigger the main CN/HCN formation pathways. We also report significant negative correlations between submillimeter CN emission and both C ii] and FUV continuum fluxes, implying that CN is also more readily dissociated in disks with stronger FUV irradiation. No clear relationships are detected between either CN or HCN and Lyα or UV-H{sub 2} emission. This is attributed to the spatial stratification of the various molecular species, which span several vertical layers and radii across the inner and outer disk. We expect that future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope will build on this work by enabling more sensitive IR surveys than were possible with Spitzer.

Cloud regimes over the Amazon Basin: perspectives from the GoAmazon2014/5 campaign

Abstract. Radiosonde observations collected during the GoAmazon2014/5 campaign are analyzed to identify the primary thermodynamic regimes accompanying different modes of convection over the Amazon. This analysis identifies five thermodynamic regimes that are consistent with traditional Amazon calendar definitions of seasonal shifts, which include one wet, one transitional, and three dry season regimes based on a k-means cluster analysis. A multisensor ground-based approach is used to project associated bulk cloud and precipitation properties onto these regimes. This is done to assess the propensity for each regime to be associated with different characteristic cloud frequency, cloud types, and precipitation properties. Additional emphasis is given to those regimes that promote deep convective precipitation and organized convective systems. Overall, we find reduced cloud cover and precipitation rates to be associated with the three dry regimes and those with the highest convective inhibition. While approximately 15 % of the dataset is designated as organized convection, these events are predominantly contained within the transitional regime.

Photogrammetric calibration of the NASA-Wallops Island image intensifier system

An image intensifier was designed for use as one of the primary tracking systems for the barium cloud experiment at Wallops Island. Two computer programs, a definitive stellar camara calibration program and a geodetic stellar camara orientation program, were originally developed at Wallops on a GE 625 computer. A mathematical procedure for determining the image intensifier distortions is outlined, and the implementation of the model in the Wallops computer programs is described. The analytical calibration of metric cameras is also discussed.

Development of a comet as it pursues its orbit

The properties of cometary dust-swarms in almost parabolic long-period orbits are examined. The effect of passage of the solar system through interstellar gas clouds is shown to be capable of affecting substantially the angular momentum of a comet about the sun, thus accounting for the existence of comets with high values of perihelion distance. The same process would enable cometary particles to adsorb interstellar gases and regenerate their gas content.

Physics of the primitive solar nebula and of giant gaseous protoplanets

It has been proposed that the supernova responsible for injecting Al-26 into the early solar system was in fact responsible for triggering the collapse of an interstellar cloud in order to produce a system of stars, one of which would be the solar system. Details concerning the mechanism involved in such a process are discussed. Attention is given to the evolution of the primitive solar nebula, the instabilities in the primitive solar nebula, and the giant gaseous protoplanets. The principal conclusion to be drawn from the material presented is that the primitive solar nebula was a rather chaotic place, highly turbulent, with the multiple formation of giant gaseous protoplanets.

Preliminary results of the study of lightning location relative to storm structure and dynamics

Lightning is being studied relative to storm structure using a VHF space-time discharge mapping system, radar, a cloud-to-ground flash locator, acoustic reconstruction of thunder, and other instrumentation. The horizontal discharge processes within the cloud generally propagate at speeds of 10,000-100,000 m/s. Horizontal extents of lightning were found up to 90 km. In an analysis of a limited number of flashes, lightning occurred in or near regions of high cyclonic shear. Positive cloud-to-ground flashes have been observed emanating from several identifiable regions of severe storms. Lightning echoes observed with 10-cm radar generally are 10-25 dB greater than the largest precipitation echo in the storm.

Lightning discharge identification system

A system for differentiating between cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning discharges is described which includes an electric field antenna that senses the rate of charge of an electric field produced by a lightning discharge. When the signal produced by the electric field exceeds a predetermined threshold, it is fed to a coincidence detector. A VHF antenna is also provided and generates a video signal responsive to a cloud to cloud lightning discharge, and this signal is fed through a level sensor, an inverter, to the coincidence detector simultaneously with the signal from the field detector. When signals from the electric field antenna and the VHF antenna appear at the coincidence detector simultaneously, such indicates that there is a cloud to cloud lightning discharge; whereas, when there is not a signal produced on the VHF antenna simultaneously with a signal produced by the field sensor, then a strike indicator connected to the coincidence detector indicates a cloud to ground lightning discharge.

Investigation of mesoscale meteorological phenomena as observed by geostationary satellite

Satellite imagery plus conventional synoptic observations were used to examine three mesoscale systems recently observed by the GOES-EAST satellite. The three systems are an arc cloud complex (ACC), mountain lee wave clouds and cloud streets parallel to the wind shear. Possible gravity-wave activity is apparent in all three cases. Of particular interest is the ACC because of its ability to interact with other mesoscale phenomena to produce or enhance convection.

On charge exchange and knock-on processes in the exosphere of Io

One direct consequence of magnetospheric interaction of Io is the strong dynamical coupling of its neutral atmosphere with the corotating plasma. The absorption of the thermal ions and the associated neutral injection is an improtant issue not yet explored. As far as nonthermal escape of the neutral atmosphere is concerned, three processes stand out. That is, apart from sputtering, exospheric interactions like atom-ion knock-on collision and charge exchange recombination could be a significant source of the neutral clouds in the Jovian system. Using a current electrodynamic model of Io, both the absorption rate of the corotating thermal plasma and the production rates of new exospheric ions and the fast neutrals are considered. It is found that the source strength of the neutral atoms and molecules with speeds of about 100 km/sec could amount to 10 to the 26th/sec whereas exospheric neutrals emitted at lower speed (of about 10 km/sec) amounts to 4 x 10 to the 25th/sec. The generation of the new ions in connection with the streaming of the magnetospheric plasma around Io could also produce an asymmetric sputtering with a neutral flux of about 10 to the 27th/sec emitted from the region of Io which faces Jupiter. These results may be related to a number of sodium observations.

Paradigm transition in cosmic plasma physics

New discoveries in cosmic plasma physics are described, and their applications to solar, interstellar, galactic, and cosmological problems are discussed. The new discoveries include the existence of double layers in magnetized plasmas and in the low magnetosphere, and energy transfer by electric current in the auroral circuit. It is argued that solar flares and the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction should not be interpreted in terms of magnetic merging theories, and that electric current needs to be explicitly taken account of in understanding these phenomena. The filamentary structure of cosmic plasmas may be caused by electric currents in space, and the pinch effect may have a central role to play in the evolutionary history of interstellar clouds, stars, and solar systems. Space may have a cellular structure, with the cell walls formed by thin electric current layers. Annihilation may be the source of energy for quasars and the Hubble expansion, and the big bang cosmology may well be wrong.

Comet Bowell 1980b

Optical filter photometry, and optical and ultraviolet spectrophotometry data collected between November 1980 and June 1982 of Comet Bowell are presented. It was determined that Comet Bowell began producing significant amounts of OH, though not other species, before perihelion at a heliocentric distance near 4.6 AU. As the comet approached perihelion at 3.4 AU, OH production decreased and CN and C2 species were detected at normal concentrations. An outburst in April 1982 was dominated by OH. The grains in 1982 near perihelion showed increases in albedo between 3150 and 4500 A and 1.2 and 1.6 microns. The presence of two grains populations was suggested, together with the conclusion that Comet Bowell was physically a typical new comet entering the inner solar system from the Oort cloud for the first time.

Flame propagation and extinction in particle clouds

Two phase flame propagation and extinction theory required to support the corresponding experiments planned for the space shuttle is being developed. Also being planned are specialized collaborative, experimental and theoretical NASA UCSD studies needed to support the ongoing definition of needed experimental hardware, experimental procedures, data acquisition philosophy, and other ground based support activities required to assure the success of space shuttle based experiments concerned with combustion of clouds of particulates at reduced gravitational conditions. The further development of relations delineating premixed particle cloud and premixed gaseous systems as well as burner stabilized and freely propagating flame systems is considered.

2060 Chiron - Colorimetry and cometary behavior

Ambiguities concerning the fit of the 2060 Chiron's visible spectrum to its IR spectrum have been resolved by resort to VRIJHK colorimetry obtained in 1988, which also confirms the neutrality of Chiron's taxonomic class C spectrum and indicates that Chiron has anomalously brightened since 1980-1983. This brightening, and one reported in 1978, are consistent with the hypothesis that Chiron sporadically undergoes weak cometary outbursts similar to those of comet P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1; Chiron is further speculated to be an ice-rich object darkened by C-class carbonaceous soil, and may have been scattered from the Oort cloud in recent solar system history.

Are periodic bombardments real?

Consideration is given to the hypothesis that showers of comets or asteroids strike the earth every 26 m yrs, causing climatic castastrophes and mass extinctions (Raup and Sepkoski, 1984). Possible explanations for the alleged periodicity are discussed, including the possibility that the sun has a small faint companion star and perturbations of the Oort cloud as the solar system passes through the Galactic plane. Also, the possible causes of the extinction at the K-T boundary are examined. The implications of these theories are noted and evidence suggesting that impacts do not have periodicity is presented.

Atmosphere-biosphere exchange of CO2 and O3 in the Central Amazon Forest

An eddy correlation measurement of O3 deposition and CO2 exchange at a level 10 m above the canopy of the Amazon forest, conducted as part of the NASA/INPE ABLE2b mission during the wet season of 1987, is presented. It was found that the ecosystem exchange of CO2 undergoes a well-defined diurnal variation driven by the input of solar radiation. A curvilinear relationship was found between solar irradiance and uptake of CO2, with net CO2 uptake at a given solar irradiance equal to rates observed over forests in other climate zones. The carbon balance of the system appeared sensitive to cloud cover on the time scale of the experiment, suggesting that global carbon storage might be affected by changes in insolation associated with tropical climate fluctuations. The forest was found to be an efficient sink for O3 during the day, and evidence indicates that the Amazon forests could be a significant sink for global ozone during the nine-month wet period and that deforestation could dramatically alter O3 budgets.

The rate of planet formation and the solar system's small bodies

The evolution of random velocities and the mass distribution of preplanetary body at the early stage of accumulation are currently under review. Arguments were presented for and against the view of an extremely rapid, runaway growth of the largest bodies at this stage with parameter values of Theta approximately greater than 10(exp 3). Difficulties are encountered assuming such a large Theta: (1) bodies of the Jovian zone penetrate the asteroid zone too late and do not have time to hinder the formation of a normal-sized planet in the asteroidal zone and thereby remove a significant portion of the mass of solid matter and (2) Uranus and Neptune cannot eject bodies from the solar system into the cometary cloud. Therefore, the values Theta less than 10(exp 2) appear to be preferable.
