The community of North Birmingham, Alabama, participated in the Communities LEAP pilot program. As part of this technical assistance pilot, the Alabama Clean Fuels Coalition conducted community engagement in the community to learn about the state of transportation and community priorities. This report highlights results and provides opportunities for improvements.
The availability of smart, connected thermostats has improved climate control, energy efficiency, and grid demand-response programs for central HVAC systems. However, a significant gap exists in addressing integrated control systems for point-source heating and cooling systems such as window air-conditioners (window ACs) and mini-split heat pumps (MSHPs). This report examines the emerging market of third-party connected thermostats tailored for these systems, focusing on their effectiveness, reliability, and potential barriers to adoption. This study evaluates several commercially available products designed for room ACs and MSHPs through a series of laboratory tests. While these infrared-based (IR-based) thermostats offer remote temperature control and scheduling via mobile apps, our findings reveal that none are seamless, with reliability of basic functions being a critical factor. Promising features include integration of indoor air quality metrics and time-of-use pricing, but the latter are not yet available in the U.S. Barriers to broad user acceptance include non-seamless setup processes, challenges in thermostat placement, and unclear product differentiation. There is a pressing need for research and development in enabling MSHPs and central thermostats to coordinate, enhancing energy savings and comfort in retrofit applications. This study underscores the importance of further innovation in connected thermostat technology to address the diverse needs of single-zone HVAC systems and promote efficient energy management in households.
The Hanford Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF) ammonia tolerant grout waste form was developed by the Vitreous State Laboratory (VSL) to stabilize ammonium and thereby prevent emission of ammonia vapor during processing of a final cementitious waste form. This ETF evaporator bottom waste is a concentrated sodium sulfate aqueous solution that also contains dissolved ammonium. The VSL waste form was produced in a two-step process in which struvite (MgNH 4 PO 4.6 H 2 O) is precipitated and then the resulting slurry is solidified in a cementitious matrix. SRNL researchers were tasked to evaluate the effect of compositional and struvite stability in simulated ETF evaporator brine. In 2022 to 2023, samples prepared by SRNL experienced significant expansion (up to 20 volume %) which was not observed by VSL.
Group-V doping can enhance the efficiency of CdTe photovoltaic devices by increasing the open-circuit voltage (Voc), if long lifetimes can be retained and radiative voltage loss can be avoided. In this preliminary study, ex-situ Sb doping via drive-in diffusion improved grain sizes compared to Sb-free films without CdCl2 treatment. Sb doping did not reduce the carrier lifetime for uniform CdSeTe absorbers. Additionally, the CST-air surface recombination decreased with Sb. No potential fluctuations were observed by PL at this doping level. The [Sb] and carrier concentration for this study are not yet measured so the conclusions drawn are all preliminary
This report documents a cross-site effort to identify and evaluate materials that are suitable replacements for the polyurethanes known as EN-7 and EN-8. EN-7 and EN-8 are commercial formulations that contain free toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and which are used as adhesives and as encapsulants in many weapon applications. TDI is an OSHA-regulated volatile diisocyanate and has been targeted for elimination from future weapons use, prompting the need for a TDI-free replacement material.
In this portion of the TrojAI evaluation, we focus on the cyber-network-c2-mar2024 dataset. Recall that in this round ResNet18 and ResNet34 neural networks (NN) were trained on the USTC-TFC2016 dataset with the aim of distinguishing between benign versus botnet command and control (c2) packets. A range of bytes from each packet was reformatted into a 28x28 pixel image, and the collection of reformatted packets served as the training (and testing) data for the two ResNet models. For some of the data a trigger watermark was strategically placed to affect various inputs to the NNs. This watermarked, or poisoned, data in turn created a poisoned, or trojaned NN. The data were poisoned in different ways ultimately creating different trojaned NNs. This collection of trojaned NNs was combined with various versions of not trojaned NNs and served as the training and testing data for the performers. The performers’ task was to construct a classifier to distinguish between the trojaned and not trojaned models. It was previously noted that the performers struggled with the cyber-network-c2-mar2024 dataset, motivating this investigation of potential reasons the performers experienced challenges.
This work presents NETL’s efforts in analyzing the performance and cost of a of water treatment trains for processing produced water. Levelized cost of water (LCOW) and specific energy consumption (SEC) figures are provided for both treatment trains. Permeate compositions are compared to the Type I produced water standards for the state of Texas.
Since the WTP Low Activity Waste (LAW) Vitrification Facility was not designed to process the entire inventory of Hanford LAW, up to half of the retrieved Hanford LAW will require supplemental immobilization. Immobilizing LAW in a cementitious waste form known as Cast Stone has been investigated as a possible candidate supplemental immobilization technology. In FY21, Washington River Protection Solutions, LLC (WRPS) tasked Atkins and the Vitreous State Laboratory (VSL) of The Catholic University of America (CUA) to perform testing to evaluate methods for reducing the release of COCs, particularly nitrate, 99Tc, and 129I, from cementitious waste forms made from aqueous LAW derived from Hanford Tank Waste. FY22 work built on the FY21 results and further developed formulations while targeting higher waste loadings. The objective of this work was to perform laboratory-scale testing to further refine the most promising formulation(s) that were identified in the FY23 work. The goal of the refinement was to further reduce the release rates for 99Tc, Cr, 129I, and nitrate while maintaining workability of the fresh grout, and to increase waste loading.
Stable and accurate timing forms the foundation of many modern essential services. While Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) provide a cheap way to achieve extremely accurate timing, these systems are vulnerable to interference and complete outages, forcing systems that rely on them into a state of holdover. Testing and characterizing holdover performance is therefore essential for ensuring that these modern services do not go down when GNSS-based timing is unavailable.
