High performance millimeter-wave microstrip circulators and isolators

Millimeter wave systems, phased array antennas, and high performance components all require wideband circulators (and isolators) to perform diplexing and switching, to improve isolation and Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), and to construct IMPATT diode reflection amplifiers. Presently, most of the millimeter-wave circulators and isolators are available in the configurations of waveguide or stripline, both of which suffer from the shortcomings of bulky size/weight, narrow bandwidth, and poor compatibility with monolithic millimeter-wave integrated circuits (MMIC). MMW microstrip circulators/isolators can eliminate or improve these shortcomings. Stub-tuned microstrip circulator configuration were developed utilizing the electromagnetic fields perturbation technique, the adhesion problems of microstrip metallization on new ferrite substrate were overcome, the fabrication, assembly, packaging techniques were improved, and then successfully designed, fabricated a Ka band circulator which has isolation and return loss of greater than 16dB, insertion loss less than 0.7dB. To assess the steady and reliable performance of the circulator, a temperature cycling test was done over the range of -20 to +50 C for 3 continuous cycles and found no significant impact or variation of circulator performance.

Highly coherent long cavity GaAs/AlGaAs single-quantum-well lasers

The spectral properties of ridge-waveguide graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure single-quantum-well (SQW) GaAs/AlGaAs lasers are measured. Long-cavity lasers (800 microns) exhibit remarkably pure CW single-longitudinal-mode spectra in spite of the short cavity mode spacing. At output power 5 mW, the sidemode suppression exceeds 24 dB and the linewidth is 1.5 MHz. The linewidth-power product (LPP) is 6.4 MHz mW. Measurements of LPP as a function of cavity length L gives a 1/L-squared dependence, in agreement with theory. The results are used to deduce the linewidth enhancement factor alpha at the gain peak wavelength and its dependence on the excitation level. The sublinear gain-carrier density relation in the SQW results in an increase in alpha with increasing carrier density (decreasing cavity length). A decrease in alpha was observed for lasers operating at the second quantized state due to a recovery of the differential gain.

High frequency GaAlAs modulator and photodetector for phased array antenna applications

A waveguide Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator and an interdigitated photoconductive detector designed to operate at 820 nm, fabricated on different GaAlAs/GaAs heterostructure materials, are being investigated for use in optical interconnects in phased array antenna systems. Measured optical attenuation effects in the modulator are discussed and the observed modulation performance up to 1 GHz is presented. Measurements of detector frequency response are described and results presented.

Solitonlike solutions in loop current eddies

The application of the nonlinear quasi-geostrophic equations to an isolated eddy in the western continental slope region in the Gulf of Mexico is examined for a two-layer ocean model with bottom topography. In the linear limit, solutions are topographic nondispersive waves. Form-preserving solutions, or solitons, have been found. The solution is shown to be a limiting form for a nonlinear dispersive system propagating northward along the topographic waveguide in the western continental slope region in the Gulf of Mexico. Using satellite-tracked drifter data, a linear relationship is found between the amplitude of the deduced stream function of the eddy and its observed translational velocity over the continental slope, which supports the hypothesis that some mesoscale eddies interacting with the continental slope behave as solitons.

Telecommunications technology development for the Deep Space Network

The telecommunications technology that is currently being developed for the Deep Space Network (DSN), a system providing communications and navigation support for NASA's deep space missions, is discussed. The major areas of development include Ka-band (32 GHz) technology, beam waveguide antennas, low-noise amplifiers, coding, navigation techniques, high-power transmitters, and optical technology. The expected payoffs of the new technology during the mid-1990's and later are examined.

Failure processes within ceramic coatings at high temperatures

Plasma sprayed coatings have a complex structure which is produced by the overlaying of many molten or semi-molten particles in the diameter range of 20 to 120 microns. The failure behavior of coatings has been characterized by using acoustic emission (AE) methodology. Coatings of NiCrAlY bond coat with a zirconia-12 wt pct yttria overlay were applied to disk-shaped specimens of U-700 alloy. A waveguide of 1-mm diameter platinum was TlG welded to the specimen and allowed it to be suspended in a tubular furnace. The specimen was thermally cycled to 1150 C and the AE monitored. Analyses have been carried out with the aim of establishing parameters which are related to the crack size population. These studies have been used to postulate types of cracking mechanisms which may occur in plasma sprayed coatings during thermal cycling. It is shown that microcracking gave rise to a large amount of AE. However, this coating still survived more thermal cycles than a coating which exhibited macrocracking events.

Standing hydromagnetic waves in the Io plasma torus - Voyager 1 observations

An attempt to analyze Voyager 1 magnetic field data for the existence of any ultralow-frequency hydromagnetic waves in the Io plasma torus is presented. The coincidence between the increase in wave activity and the entry into the Io plasma torus is in support of treating the torus as a low Alfven velocity region and thus as a hydromagnetic waveguide. A first theoretical treatment of hydromagnetic wave propagation within the torus suggests that decoupling of toroidal and poloidal type oscillations can occur under the condition of axisymmetry of the wave field. Numerical calculations of the fundamental mode toroidal and first harmonic poloidal eigenperiods for a model Jovian magnetosphere give values quite in agreement with the observed periods. Observations of nearly axisymmetric, decoupled toroidal and poloidal mode eigenoscillations of the Io plasma torus suggest a large-scale source mechanism for the detected magnetic field fluctuations.

A superconducting tunnel junction receiver for 345 GHz

The design, fabrication, and testing of a quasi-particle tunnel junction receiver for use at 345 GHz are discussed. The design employs small area Nb/Nb-oxide/PbInAu edge junctions in order to keep the device capacitance small and maintain a modest value for omega R(N)C. For optimum noise performance and beam properties the mixer is contained in a waveguide mounting structure. The best sensitivity was obtained at 312 GHz where a double sideband (DSB) noise temperature of 275 K was measured. Noise temperatures of 400 K (DSB) or better were obtained out to 350 GHz.

Highly efficient pseudomorphic InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well lasers for monolithic integration

Highly efficient ridge waveguide pseudomorphic single quantum well lasers, emitting at 980 nm, have been fabricated from an In(0.2)Ga(0.8)As/GaAs/AlGaAs graded-index separate confinement heterostructure grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The laterial index guiding provided by the ridge reduces the anomalously large lateral loss of optical power found in gain-guided structures, thereby reducing the internal loss by more than 50 percent. The low threshold current (7.6 mA) and high differential quantum efficiency (79 percent) obtained under continuous operation as well as the transparency of the GaAs substrate to the emitted radiation render these lasers attractive for Ga-As-based optoelectronic integration.

Complex permittivity of lanthanum aluminate in the 20 to 300 K temperature range from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz

Dielectric constants of microwave substrates are required in the design of superconducting microwave circuits at various temperatures. In this paper, the results are reported of a study of the complex permittivity of the newly developed lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3) substrate, in the 20 to 300 K temperature range at frequencies from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz. The value of the complex permittivity was obtained by measuring the sample scattering parameters using a microwave waveguide technique. It is observed that, while the dielectric constant did not change appreciably with frequency, its value decreased by approximately 14 percent from room temperature to 20 K.

High-power operation of highly reliable narrow stripe pseudomorphic single quantum well lasers emitting at 980 nm

Ridge waveguide pseudomorphic InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs single-quantum-well lasers exhibiting record high quantum efficiencies and high output power densities (105 mW per facet from a 6 micron wide stripe) at a lasing wavelength of 980 nm are discussed that were fabricated from a graded index separate confinement heterostructure grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Life testing at an output power of 30 mW per uncoated facet reveals a slow gradual degradation during the initial 500 h of operation after which the operating characteristics of the lasers become stable. The emission wavelength, the high output power, and the fundamental lateral mode operation render these lasers suitable for pumping Er3+-doped fiber amplifiers.

Temperature measurements of a high-power microwave feedhorn window

Temperature measurements of a high-power microwave feedhorn window, obtained using an imaging IR radiometer during transmitter operation at 365 kW CW and 8.5 GHz, are discussed. The window under investigation was constructed of HTP-6, a high-thermal-performance material developed to shield the Space Shuttle Orbiter from the heat of reentry. The measurement technique is described, and experimental results are presented. The window performed adequately at 365 kW CW with a center temperature of 475 C. The tests verify that HTP-6 can be used as a window material or a support structure in high-power waveguides at power densities of 1.47 kW/sq cm for extended periods of time, with no change in its mechanical characteristics.

Thermal forcing on the tropical Pacific from satellite data

Monthly fields of latent heat flux and surface solar irradiance derived from spaceborne sensors were combined to estimate the surface thermal forcing on the tropical Pacific from 1980 to 1983. The annual cycle and the anomalies associated with 1982-1983 ENSO episode were examined. Along the equator and during the early phase of the episode the reduction of solar irradiance into the ocean is found to be compensated to some extent by the decrease in evaporative cooling. The distribution of correlation coefficients demonstrated that outside the equatorial waveguides, surface thermal forcing plays a significant role in the seasonal change of sea surface temperature and surface solar irradiance is main driving force. Significant correlation is also found between anomalous latent heat flux and anomalous change of sea surface temperature over a broad area in the equatorial and southern tropical Pacific, indicating that surface thermal forcing may play a larger role than expected in the anomalous sea surface temperature change, particularly in the reestablishment of the cold tongue at end of the episode.

Dielectric properties measurement of substrate and support materials

In this paper a fast and straightforward waveguide measurement technique is described for the determination of the dielectric constant and loss tangent of many commercially available materials. These dielectric materials include Cuflon, Teflon, Arlon's polyimides, Lockheed's ceramic foams, and Rogers Duroid materials. The effective dielectric constant and loss tangent of Hexsel's honeycomb material is also measured by this method and is compared to the predicted data obtained using the volume averaging theory. The accuracy and other features of this measurement technique are also discussed.

Measurement and analysis of a microwave oscillator stabilized by a sapphire dielectric ring resonator for ultra-low noise

Phase-noise measurements are presented for a microwave oscillator whose frequency is stabilized by a whispering-gallery sapphire ring resonator with Q of 200,000. This mode involves little metallic conduction and allows nearly full use of the very low dielectric loss in sapphire. Several mode families have been identified, in good agreement with frequency calculations. For a 5-cm wheel resonator in a 7.6-cm container, Q values above 100,000 were found at room temperature for all of the modes in this sequence. Coupling Q-values for these same modes ranged from 10,000 (n = 5) to 100,000 (n = 10) for a WR112 waveguide port at the center of the cylinder wall of the containing can. Phase noise measurements for a transistor oscillator locked to the n = 10 (7.84-GHz) mode showed a 1/f cubed dependence for low offset frequencies, and a value of L(f) = -55 dB/Hz at an offset of 10 Hz from the carrier.

The authors have fabricated ridge waveguide pseudomorphic InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs GRIN-SCH SQW (graded-index separate-confinement-heterostructure single-quantum-well) lasers, emitting at 980 nm, with a maximum output power of 240 mW from one facet and a 22 percent coupling efficiency into a 1.55-micron single-mode optical fiber. These lasers satisfy the requirements on efficient and compact pump sources for Er3+-doped fiber amplifiers.

Semiconductor Laser With Multilayer Dielectric Reflector

Multilayer dielectric reflector included in proposed surface-emitting, distributed-feedback, grating semiconductor laser (e.g., a GaAlAs device). Contributes to efficiency and output power of laser by reducing amount of light entering substrate, where wasted by absorption. Index of refraction in reflector sublayers alternates between higher and lower value. Higher value less than effective index of refraction of waveguide layer.
