Pressure distributions from subsonic tests of an advanced laminar-flow-control wing with leading- and trailing-edge flaps

An unswept, semispan wing model equipped with full-span leading- and trailing-edge flaps was tested in the Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel to determine the effect of high-lift components on the aerodynamics of an advanced laminar-flow-control (LFC) airfoil section. Chordwise pressure distributions near the midsemispan were measured for four configurations: cruise, trailing-edge flap only, and trailing-edge flap with a leading edge Kreuger flap of either 0.10 or 0.12 chord. Part 1 of this report presents a representative sample of the plotted pressure distribution data for each configuration tested. Part 2 (under separate cover) presents the entire set of plotted and tabulated pressure distribution data. The data are presented without analysis.

NASA combined file postings statistics based on NASA thesaurus, Jan. 1968 - July 1988

The NASA Combined File Postings Statistics is published semiannually (January and July). This alphabetical listing of postable subject terms contained in the NASA Thesaurus is used to display the numbers of postings (documents) indexed by each subject term from 1968 to date. The postings total per term are separated by announcement or other media into STAR, IAA, NLN, and OTHER columnar entries covering the NASA document collection (1968 to date). Nearly 594,000 book postings for NALNET Books held by NASA libraries are now included under the NLN column. CSTAR postings as well as some previously unreported series are now listed under the other column. File postings statistics for the Alternate Data Base covering the NASA collection from 1962 through 1967 were published on a one-time basis in September 1975. Subject terms for the Alternate Data Base are derived from the Subject Authority List, reprinted in 1985, which is available on request. The distribution of 16,919,195 postings among the 17,105 Thesaurus terms is tabulated on the last page of Combined File Postings Statistics.

Angular radiation models for Earth-atmosphere system. Volume 1: Shortwave radiation

Presented are shortwave angular radiation models which are required for analysis of satellite measurements of Earth radiation, such as those fro the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE). The models consist of both bidirectional and directional parameters. The bidirectional parameters are anisotropic function, standard deviation of mean radiance, and shortwave-longwave radiance correlation coefficient. The directional parameters are mean albedo as a function of Sun zenith angle and mean albedo normalized to overhead Sun. Derivation of these models from the Nimbus 7 ERB (Earth Radiation Budget) and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) data sets is described. Tabulated values and computer-generated plots are included for the bidirectional and directional modes.

Small Martian valcanoes

Various types of volcanoes were identified on Mars, mainly on the basis of qualitative morphologic criteria such as relief, circularity, summit craters, and alignment with structural trends. A survey of Viking Orbiter images is being conducted to identify possible candidates for Martian volcanoes. The topographic profiles of the selected Martian volcanoes that are currently being acquired will be compared with tabulated data for terrestrial and lunar volcanoes. Variation in volcanic style with age will also be examined.

Small reactor power system for space application

A development history and comparative performance capability evaluation is presented for spacecraft nuclear powerplant Small Reactor Power System alternatives. The choice of power conversion technology depends on the reactor's operating temperature; thermionic, thermoelectric, organic Rankine, and Alkali metal thermoelectric conversion are the primary power conversion subsystem technology alternatives. A tabulation is presented for such spacecraft nuclear reactor test histories as those of SNAP-10A, SP-100, and NERVA.

Perspective traffic display format and airline pilot traffic avoidance

Part-task experiments have examined perspective projections of cockpit displays of traffic information as a means of presenting aircraft separation information to airline pilots. Ten airline pilots served as subjects in an experiment comparing the perspective projection with plan-view projections of the same air traffic situations. The pilots' task was to monitor the traffic display in order to decide if an avoidance maneuver was needed. Pilots took more time to select avoidance maneuvers with a conventional plan-view display than with an experimental perspective display. In contrast to previous results, if the pilots selected a maneuver with the perspective display, they were more likely to choose one with a vertical component. Tabulation of the outcomes of their initial avoidance decisions with both perspective and plan-view displays showed that they were more likely to achieve required separation with maneuvers chosen with the aid of perspective displays.

Gastrointestinal motility in space motion sickness

Gastrointestinal symptoms in space motion sickness (SMS) are significantly different from those in ordinary motion sickness (MS). Recording and tabulation of sounds was the only technique that could be used as a measure of motility during spaceflight operations. There were 17 subjects, six unaffected by SMS, who made ambulatory recordings preflight and inflight. With one exception, all those affected had sharply reduced sounds, while those unaffected had increases or moderate reductions. The mechanism of vomiting in SMS appears to be secondary to this ileus, in contrast to vomiting in ordinary MS, where the emesis center is thought to be directly triggered by the vestibular system.

Generalized approach to cooling charge-coupled devices using thermoelectric coolers

This paper is concerned with the use of thermoelectric coolers (TECs) to cool charge-coupled devices (CCDs). Heat inputs to the CCD from the warmer environment are identified, and generalized graphs are used to approximate the major heat inputs. A method of choosing and estimating the power consumption of the TEC is discussed. This method includes the use of TEC performance information supplied by the manufacturer and equations derived from this information. Parameters of the equations are tabulated to enable the reader to use the TEC performance equations for choosing and estimating the power needed for specific TEC applications.

A photoelectric survey of 130 asteroids

Asteroid collisional evolution has been investigated by an observational survey conducted on 150 nights from November, 1982, to February, 1985. Attention is given to the function of collisions in the clearing of the Kirkwood 3/1 resonance gap and the formation and evolution of the Eos and Koronis families. When combined, the more than 400 lightcurves obtained allowed the derivation of rotational periods and lightcurve amplitudes. In addition, B-V and U-B colors were obtained for most of the objects. Absolute magnitudes have been computed, and a tabulation of observational circumstances is presented.

An atlas of optical spectrophotometry of Wolf-Rayet carbon and oxygen stars

The atlas contains a homogeneous set of optical spectrophotometric observations (3300-7300 A) at moderate resolution (about 10 A) of almost all WC and WO stars in the Galaxy, the LMC, and the SMC. The data are presented in the form of spectral tracings (in magnitude units) arranged by subtype, with no correction for interstellar reddening. A montage of prototype stars of each spectral class is also shown. Comprehensive line identifications are given for the optical lines of WC and WO spectra, with major contributions tabulated and unidentified lines noted.

Palomar-Leiden minor planets - Proper elements, frequency distributions, belt boundaries, and family memberships

Tabulations are presented for the proper elements of 1227 higher accuracy orbits of faint minor planets encompassing earth and deep Mars crossers, Trojans, and Hildas. The distribution of the closest approach distance to Mars drops off sharply near zero, while that for Jupiter vanishes near 1.1 AU; it is suggested that Mars and Jupiter have caused these boundaries, so that the asteroid belt must have been larger early in the solar system's history. Some 3.5 percent of the sample, primarily shallow crossers, can impact Mars; the fortuitous alignments required for impact occur with near-simultaneity for these objects, so that they will episodically bombard Mars.

Circumstances for Pluto-Charon mutual events in 1988

Physical parameters are tabulated for 89 Pluto-Charon mutual events occurring during the 1988 opposition. A primary star and a check star have been selected as comparison stars for events occurring prior to the 1988 opposition. Standardization of the comparison star 1987 Primary has provided a B magnitude of 12.3093 + or - 0.0013 and a V magnitude of 11.4215 + or - 0.0013. The designations, positions, and preliminary magnitudes and colors are also given for two transformation stars selected in order to aid in determination of the color terms necessary to convert the instrumental magnitudes of observers to the standard system.

Background stratospheric aerosol reference model

Nearly global SAGE I satellite observations in the nonvolcanic period from March 1979 to February 1980 are used to produce a reference background stratospheric aerosol optical model. Zonally average profiles of the 1.0-micron aerosol extinction for the tropics, midlatitudes, and high latitudes for both hemispheres are given in graphical and tabulated form for the different seasons. A third order polynomial fit to the vertical profile data set is used to derive analytic expressions for the seasonal global means and the yearly global mean. The results have application to the simulation of atmospheric radiative transfer and radiance calculations in atmospheric remote sensing.

Structureborne noise in aircraft

The amount of noise reaching an aircraft's interior by structureborne paths, when high levels of other noises are present, involves the measurement of transfer functions between vibrating levels on the wing and interior noise. The magnitude of the structureborne noise transfer function is established by exciting the aircraft with an electrodynamic shaker; a second transfer function is measured using the same sensor locations with the aircraft engines operating. Attention is given to the case of a twin-turboprop OV-10A aircraft; the resulting transfer function values at the discrete frequencies corresponding to the propeller blade passage frequency and its first four harmonics are tabulated and illustrated.

Direct solution for thermal stresses in a nose cap under an arbitrary axisymmetric temperature distribution

The design of a nose cap for a hypersonic vehicle is an iterative process requiring a rapid, easy to use and accurate stress analysis. The objective of this paper is to develop such a stress analysis technique from a direct solution of the thermal stress equations for a spherical shell. The nose cap structure is treated as a thin spherical shell with an axisymmetric temperature distribution. The governing differential equations are solved by expressing the stress solution to the thermoelastic equations in terms of a series of derivatives of the Legendre polynomials. The process of finding the coefficients for the series solution in terms of the temperature distribution is generalized by expressing the temperature along the shell and through the thickness as a polynomial in the spherical angle coordinate. Under this generalization the orthogonality property of the Legendre polynomials leads to a sequence of integrals involving powers of the spherical shell coordinate times the derivative of the Legendre polynomials. The coefficients of the temperature polynomial appear outside of these integrals. Thus, the integrals are evaluated only once and their values tabulated for use with any arbitrary polynomial temperature distribution.

Ground testing of array modules for the photovoltaic array space power (PASP) experiment

One of the objectives of the PASP experiment is the verification of cost-effective ground simulations of high-voltage solar array/space-environment interactions by comparing the results with flight data. These ground tests consist of electrical characterization, thermal cycling, and plasma chamber simulations. The results of the latter tests are reported. Five array modules which are representative of the flight arrays were tested. The module types are planar silicon, planar gallium arsenide, planar silicon passivated with an integrally deposited cover glass, mini-Cassegrainian concentrator, and SLATS concentrator. The modules were biased to -1000 V in varying plasma densities from 4 x 103 to 2 x 105 e-/cu cm. Each array was tested in both dark and illuminated conditions with a load resistance. In addition to monitoring arcing during the plasma tests, the arrays were visually inspected and electrically characterized before and after exposure in the chamber. The electrical results are tabulated and briefly discussed.

Recombination line intensities for hydrogenic ions. II - Case B calculations for C VI, N VII and O VIII

The intensities of recombination lines formed in extended, optically thim, photoionized plasmas such as those found in PN, H II regions, and winds of certain hot stars are an important source of information on chemical abundances and can sometimes provide estimates of electron temperature. In this paper, the intensities of the recombination lines of C VI, N VII, and O VIII are calculated, accounting for both electron and heavy particle collisions and assuming case B of Baker and Menzel. The computational procedure is explained. The intensities of lines formed by transitions n(u) - n(l) are tabulated for n(u) of 50 or less, n(l) of 29 or less, at log N(e) = 4(1)13 and 10 values of electron temperature in the interval 10,000 K to 500,000 K.
