Asymmetrical booster ascent guidance and control system design study. Volume 1: Summary

Dynamics and control, stability, and guidance analyses are summarized for the asymmetrical booster ascent guidance and control system design studies, performed in conjunction with space shuttle planning. The mathematical models developed for use in rigid body and flexible body versions of the NASA JSC space shuttle functional simulator are briefly discussed, along with information on the following: (1) space shuttle stability analysis using equations of motion for both pitch and lateral axes; (2) the computer program used to obtain stability margin; and (3) the guidance equations developed for the space shuttle powered flight phases.

A regenerable CO2 and humidity control system for Shuttle

A regenerable CO2 and humidity control system is presently being developed for potential use on Shuttle as an alternate to the baseline Lithium Hydroxide (LiOH) system. The system utilizes a sorbent material (designated 'HS-C') to adsorb CO2 and water vapor from the cabin atmosphere and desorb the CO2 and water vapor overboard when exposed to a space vacuum. Past development programs concentrated on material development and breadboard system fabrication and testing. The present program calls for the design of a flight prototype system capable of integration into the Shuttle vehicle and the development of major components. This paper will show that a regenerable system utilizing HS-C material trades even with the shuttle LiOH system for the baseline four-man, seven-day mission and offers increased savings up to 448 kg for a seven-man, 30-day mission.

The development and testing of a regenerable CO2 and humidity control system for Shuttle

Continuous operation is achieved by utilizing two beds which are alternately cycled between adsorption and desorption. This paper presents the significant hardware development and test accomplishments of the past year. A half-size breadboard system utilizing a flight configuration canister was successfully performance tested in simulated Shuttle missions. A vacuum desorption test provided considerable insight into the desorption phenomena and allowed a significant reduction of the Shuttle vacuum duct size. The fabrication and testing of a flight prototype canister and flight prototype vacuum valves have proven the feasibility of these full-size, flight-weight components.

Power factor control system for AC induction motors

A power factor control system for use with ac induction motors was designed which samples lines voltage and current through the motor and decreases power input to the motor proportional to the detected phase displacement between current and voltage. This system provides, less power to the motor, as it is less loaded.

A multiple objective optimization approach to aircraft control systems design

The design of an aircraft lateral control system, subject to several performance criteria and constraints, is considered. While in the previous studies of the same model a single criterion optimization, with other performance requirements expressed as constraints, has been pursued, the current approach involves a multiple criteria optimization. In particular, a Pareto optimal solution is sought.

Design of control systems with uncertain parameters

A design method for control systems with uncertain parameters is presented. The method utilizes a generalized sensitivity approach which separates the parameter space into regions which produce a system response that satisfies given design criteria and regions which do not. Nonparametric statistics and confidence limits for the binomial distribution are used to determine degree of parameter sensitivity and to locate regions in the parameter space which maximize the probability of producing a desirable system response. In an example it is shown that a given parameter may have to be known to a lesser degree of uncertainty to be able to specify a satisfactory design.

An overview of the Mark 4A monitor and control system

The Deep Space Network (DSN) Monitor and Control System was completely changed during the conversion from Mark 3 to the Mark 4A configuration. The configuration employs shared data processing equipment between several co-located antennas, and incorporates much greater centralization of operations functions. The configuration is described and its performance is compared to that of the Mark 3 era.

Fiber optic control system integration

A total fiber optic, integrated propulsion/flight control system concept for advanced fighter aircraft is presented. Fiber optic technology pertaining to this system is identified and evaluated for application readiness. A fiber optic sensor vendor survey was completed, and the results are reported. The advantages of centralized/direct architecture are reviewed, and the concept of the protocol branch is explained. Preliminary protocol branch selections are made based on the F-18/F404 application. Concepts for new optical tools are described. Development plans for the optical technology and the described system are included.

Design of an integrated airframe/propulsion control system architecture

The design of an integrated airframe/propulsion control system architecture is described. The design is based on a prevalidation methodology that used both reliability and performance tools. An account is given of the motivation for the final design and problems associated with both reliability and performance modeling. The appendices contain a listing of the code for both the reliability and performance model used in the design.

Spacecraft dynamics characterization and control system failure detection

Two important aspects of the control of large space structures are studied: the modeling of deployed or erected structures including nonlinear joint characteristics; and the detection and isolation of failures of the components of control systems for large space structures. The emphasis in the first task is on efficient representation of the dynamics of large and complex structures having a great many joints. The initial emphasis in the second task is on experimental evaluation of FDI methodologies using ground-based facilities in place at NASA Langley Research Center and Marshall Space Flight Center. The progress to date on both research tasks is summarized.
