Space-based Science Operations Grid Prototype

Grid technology is the up and coming technology that is enabling widely disparate services to be offered to users that is very economical, easy to use and not available on a wide basis. Under the Grid concept disparate organizations generally defined as "virtual organizations" can share services i.e. sharing discipline specific computer applications, required to accomplish the specific scientific and engineering organizational goals and objectives. Grids are emerging as the new technology of the future. Grid technology has been enabled by the evolution of increasingly high speed networking. Without the evolution of high speed networking Grid technology would not have emerged. NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center's (MSFC) Flight Projects Directorate, Ground Systems Department is developing a Space-based Science Operations Grid prototype to provide to scientists and engineers the tools necessary to operate space-based science payloads/experiments and for scientists to conduct public and educational outreach. In addition Grid technology can provide new services not currently available to users. These services include mission voice and video, application sharing, telemetry management and display, payload and experiment commanding, data mining, high order data processing, discipline specific application sharing and data storage, all from a single grid portal. The Prototype will provide most of these services in a first step demonstration of integrated Grid and space-based science operations technologies. It will initially be based on the International Space Station science operational services located at the Payload Operations Integration Center at MSFC, but can be applied to many NASA projects including free flying satellites and future projects. The Prototype will use the Internet2 Abilene Research and Education Network that is currently a 10 Gb backbone network to reach the University of Alabama at Huntsville and several other, as yet unidentified, Space Station based science experimenters. There is an international aspect to the Grid involving the America's Pathway (AMPath) network, the Chilean REUNA Research and Education Network and the University of Chile in Santiago that will further demonstrate how extensive these services can be used. From the user's perspective, the Prototype will provide a single interface and logon to these varied services without the complexity of knowing the where's and how's of each service. There is a separate and deliberate emphasis on security. Security will be addressed by specifically outlining the different approaches and tools used. Grid technology, unlike the Internet, is being designed with security in mind. In addition we will show the locations, configurations and network paths associated with each service and virtual organization. We will discuss the separate virtual organizations that we define for the varied user communities. These will include certain, as yet undetermined, space-based science functions and/or processes and will include specific virtual organizations required for public and educational outreach and science and engineering collaboration. We will also discuss the Grid Prototype performance and the potential for further Grid applications both space-based and ground based projects and processes. In this paper and presentation we will detail each service and how they are integrated using Grid

Interactive Supercomputing With Jupyter

Rich user interfaces like Jupyter have the potential to make interacting with a supercomputer easier and more productive, consequently attracting new kinds of users and helping to expand the application of supercomputing to new science domains. For the scientist-user, the ideal rich user interface delivers a familiar, responsive, introspective, modular, and customizable platform upon which to build, run, capture, document, re-run, and share analysis workflows. From the provider or system administrator perspective, such a platform would also be easy to configure, deploy securely, update, customize, and support. Jupyter checks most if not all of these boxes. But from the perspective of leadership computing organizations that provide supercomputing power to users, such a platform should also make the unique features of a supercomputer center more accessible to users and more composable with high performance computing (HPC) workflows. Project Jupyter’s core design philosophy of extensibility, abstraction, and agnostic deployment, has allowed HPC centers like NERSC to bring in advanced supercomputing capabilities that can extend the interactive notebook environment. This has enabled a rich scientific discovery platform, particularly for experimental facility data analysis and machine learning problems.

Measuring Equality in Machine Learning Security Defenses: A Case Study in Speech Recognition

Over the past decade, the machine learning security community has developed a myriad of defenses for evasion attacks. An understudied question in that community is: for whom do these defenses defend? This work considers common approaches to defending learned systems and how security defenses result in performance inequities across different sub-populations. We outline appropriate parity metrics for analysis and begin to answer this question through empirical results of the fairness implications of machine learning security methods. We find that many methods that have been proposed can cause direct harm, like false rejection and unequal benefits from robustness training. The framework we propose for measuring defense equality can be applied to robustly trained models, preprocessing-based defenses, and rejection methods. We identify a set of datasets with a user-centered application and a reasonable computational cost suitable for case studies in measuring the equality of defenses. In our case study of speech command recognition, we show how such adversarial training and augmentation have non-equal but complex protections for social subgroups across gender, accent, and age in relation to user coverage. We present a comparison of equality between two rejection-based defenses: randomized smoothing and neural rejection, finding randomized smoothing more equitable due to the sampling mechanism for minority groups. This represents the first work examining the disparity in the adversarial robustness in the speech domain and the fairness evaluation of rejection-based defenses.

Security-Enhanced Autonomous Network Management

Ensuring reliable communication in next-generation space networks requires a novel network management system to support greater levels of autonomy and greater awareness of the environment and assets. Intelligent Automation, Inc., has developed a security-enhanced autonomous network management (SEANM) approach for space networks through cross-layer negotiation and network monitoring, analysis, and adaptation. The underlying technology is bundle-based delay/disruption-tolerant networking (DTN). The SEANM scheme allows a system to adaptively reconfigure its network elements based on awareness of network conditions, policies, and mission requirements. Although SEANM is generically applicable to any radio network, for validation purposes it has been prototyped and evaluated on two specific networks: a commercial off-the-shelf hardware test-bed using Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 Wi-Fi devices and a military hardware test-bed using AN/PRC-154 Rifleman Radio platforms. Testing has demonstrated that SEANM provides autonomous network management resulting in reliable communications in delay/disruptive-prone environments.

Update - Body of Knowledge (BOK) for Copper Wire Bonds

Copper wire bond technology developments continue to be a subject of technical interest to the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) NEPP (NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging Program) which funded this update. Based on this new research, additional copper bond wire vulnerabilities were found in the literature - Crevice corrosion, intrinsic degradation of palladium coated copper wire, congregation of palladium near ball bond interface leading to failure, residual aluminum pad metallization impact on device lifetimes, stitch cracking phenomena, package delamination's that have resulted in wire bond failures and device failure due to elemental sulfur. A search of the U.S.A. patent web site found 3 noteworthy patents on the following developments: claim of a certain IMC (Intermetallic Compound) thickness as a mitigation solution to chlorine corrosion; claim of using materials with different pHs to neutralize contaminants in a package containing copper wire bonds; and a discussion on ball shear test threshold values for different applications. In addition, an aerospace contractor of military hardware had a presentation on copper bond wires where it was reported that there was a parametric shift and noise susceptibility of devices with copper bond wires which affected legacy design performance. A review of silver bond wire (another emerging technology) technical papers found that an electromigration failure mechanism was evident in device applications that operate under high current conditions. More studies may need to be performed on a comprehensive basis. Research areas for consideration are suggested, however, these research and or qualification/standard test areas are not all inclusive and should not be construed as the element (s) that delivers any potential copper wire bond solution. A false sense of security may occur, whenever there is a reliance on passing any particular qualification, standard, or test protocol.

Recent Developments in Security-Constrained AC Optimal Power Flow: Overview of Challenge 1 in the ARPA-E Grid Optimization Competition

In “Recent Developments in Security-Constrained AC Optimal Power Flow: Overview of Challenge 1 in the ARPA-E Grid Optimization Competition,” we review the state of the art in practical algorithms for scheduling power-systems operations in the short term and the results of the recent competition organized by the U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy. We explain the mixed-integer nonlinear formulation used in the competition for nonspecialists in electrical engineering, the context and organization of the competition, and the performance of competitors. We find that the collective approaches and results of competitors provide support for efforts to move nonlinear optimization techniques into industrial applications, as they have proven to be a robust and efficient alternative to current linear approximation techniques.

An Integrated Two-Factor Authentication Solution Using Pulse Connect Secure and Apache HTTP Server

Complex system requirements can often lead to a situation wherein no single product or platform can provide a solution. In these cases, a solution integrating the features of multiple products and platforms is needed. Recently, a program sponsor required discontinued use of a third-party Security Assertion Markup Language Identity Provider that was being used to implement a two-factor authentication (2FA) solution that fully integrated with Pulse Connect Secure (PCS). PCS alone could not provide the features necessary to meet all the requirements of a new 2FA solution. The challenge was to leverage the features of additional platforms to design an integrated solution to meet all requirements. This paper presents a solution that integrates the features of PCS, Apache HyperText Transfer Protocol Server, and a custom application that meets all requirements, including a requirement to defend against Uniform Resource Locator manipulation as means to gain unauthorized access to backend applications.

Using Gamification to Enhance Mastery of Network Security Concepts

Gamification has proven to be effective in engaging and encouraging people to work towards and achieve goals. Many students struggle to focus on schoolwork, due to a lack of interest, lack of understanding, or other factors unique to the student. Applying gamification elements to education can help engage these students in learning their course material and help them excel academically. This study examines the effectiveness of using gamification techniques to enhance the learning experience in college Computer Science courses. A video game application is utilized to review and reinforce cybersecurity concepts that students have already been taught in class. Previous work has been made on a prototype game build that teaches about ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) components. The focus of this study is to refine and develop the structure of the prototype into a more interactive and enjoyable format with non-competitive and captivating activities that allow students to study at their own pace. An updated version of the game was created that focused on reaching a balance between education and entertainment. The game was used by students enrolled in a cybersecurity class, where pre-survey, post-survey and a focus group interview were conducted to determine how effective the updated version is compared to the current build, in addition to how effective the gamification method is regarding student retention of taught material. The pre-survey and post-survey results revealed an increase in interest and mastery of cybersecurity concepts as a result of playing the game. Students found value in the game as both a method of reviewing material taught in class and an entertaining and engaging game. These results show potential in using gamification in cybersecurity and education.

Incremental Threshold Scheme Enabled IoT Group Key Management

Cyber landscape evolves rapidly. Internet of Things (IoT) and Edge Computing (EC) have rapidly become an integral part of the modern computing infrastructure. It is expected that there will be more than 50 billion active and connected IoT devices by 2025 [1]. Pervasive IoT/EC creates unprecedented opportunities bridging the gap between previously segregated cyber and physical spaces. However, this progress also brings along new security challenges. IoT devices typically have limited computation, communication, and storage resources. This leads to security architecture designs such as using symmetric keys for group communication. While secure and efficient in stable network settings, symmetric key solutions are ill-adapted for IoT's highly dynamic device mobility behavior and frequent group membership turnover. Whenever IoT members leave a group, the known symmetric keys cannot be made forgotten, posing a serious vulnerability. This leads to frequent re-groupings that require expensive re-authentication, key regeneration, and key redistribution in order to maintain IoT/EC security. We present a novel symmetric key management framework that integrate an Incremental Threshold Scheme (ITS) cryptographical function into communication protocol's key rotation mechanism to allow for secure and efficient symmetric key communication group member node revocation. This ITS-enabled key management framework alleviates the need of frequent and expensive re-grouping and re-keying needed by today's large and dynamic IoT/EC operations. We further applied this ITS-enabled key management framework to a distributed IoT/EC-integrated publish and subscribe framework for applicability validation.

Source Characterization at Low Yields from Physics Experiment One A

The detonation of a well-recorded coupled explosion at the well-characterized Nevada National Security Site, as part of Physics Experiment One, has provided us with an opportunity to compare and contrast methods and results of yield estimation and other event characterization methods. Yield estimates are made using several methods, including local/regional magnitudes, waveform envelopes, acoustic amplitudes, joint seismoacoustic yield, and moment tensors. We include in our analysis a discussion and comparison of applicability, calibrations, assumptions, and uncertainties involved in each. With the exception of magnitude-based methods, all the techniques were more or less successful in recovering the known yield. It is, however, useful to be cognizant of requirements and calibrations, such as station coverage, emplacement conditions, propagation characterization, and uncertainties, to apply the methods to other areas with less complete information. We demonstrate that we can be successful at monitoring low-yield explosions using a variety of methods assuming that the signal-to-noise ratio is adequate at recording stations, and that the material properties are taken into account. Depth estimates are also important, particularly if one allows the possibility of a surface explosion.

Life Cycle Inventories and Data Gap Analysis for Rare Earth Elements: Neodymium and Dysprosium from Mining to Magnets

The United States demand for Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets, produced from rare earth elements (REEs) such as (Nd) and Dysprosium (Dy), far exceeds its nascent domestic production capacity, rendering it reliant on vulnerable global supply chains dominated by China. To guide research and development investments in securing U.S. REE supply, defensible benchmark metrics across environmental, economic, and social dimensions are needed. In this study, we built globally-representative, process-based cradle-to-cradle life cycle inventories for Nd and Dy in NdFeB magnets lifecycles, encompassing primary material acquisition, beneficiation, smelting and refining, metal processing, specialty alloy and chemical transformation, subcomponent manufacturing, consumer application (use phase) and end-of-life management. We carried out detailed literature review, and applied process engineering principles to build industry-representative upscaled life cycle inventories for both metals. We used these models to conduct bottom-up literature review and gap analysis on existing literature, compilation of data sources for each life cycle stage (and transformations where necessary), and a preliminary technoeconomic analysis (TEA)/life cycle costing analysis (LCCA). Findings from this work emphasize the need for metal specific, representative REE LCIs to establish robust benchmarks for advancing sustainable REE technologies and guiding R&D in REE supply chains.
