A guide for deploying Deep Learning in LHC searches: How to achieve optimality and account for uncertainty

Deep learning tools can incorporate all of the available information into a search for new particles, thus making the best use of the available data. This paper reviews how to optimally integrate information with deep learning and explicitly describes the corresponding sources of uncertainty. Simple illustrative examples show how these concepts can be applied in practice.

Reduction in radioactivity-induced backgrounds using a novel active veto detector for rare event search experiments

The results of a newly developed annular cryogenic phonon-mediated active veto detector are discussed which shows a significant reduction of radioactivity-induced backgrounds in rare event search experiments. The veto detector is made up of germanium weighing ∼500 g with an outer diameter of 76 mm and an inner diameter of 28 mm. The detector can host a 25 mm diameter germanium inner target detector of mass ∼10 g. A GEANT4 simulation with the active veto and inner target detector shows a gamma background reduction of 50 - 80% which is further improved (> 90%) with 4pi veto coverage. Experimental measurements with the detector assembly agree well with the simulation.

Active Inner Veto for Improved SuperCDMS SNOLAB Dark Matter Search Sensitivity. Final Report

The goal of this project was to develop and study a new geometry of cryogenic detector that could act as an active veto surrounding a smaller, inner cryogenic detector. This drastically reduces the background event rates, enabling more effective rare event searches. An annular germanium detector was fabricated with athermal phonon sensors and successfully tested. A threshold of better than 10keV was desired; 4keV was demonstrated.

Using Neural Architecture Search for Improving Software Flaw Detection in Multimodal Deep Learning Models

Software flaw detection using multimodal deep learning models has been demonstrated as a very competitive approach on benchmark problems. In this work, we demonstrate that even better performance can be achieved using neural architecture search (NAS) combined with multimodal learning models. We adapt a NAS framework aimed at investigating image classification to the problem of software flaw detection and demonstrate improved results on the Juliet Test Suite, a popular benchmarking data set for measuring performance of machine learning models in this problem domain.

Searching for Axion-like Particles at DarkQuest

Axion-like particles (ALPs) interacting with photons can be abundantly produced in proton xed target experiments. Once produced, they can travel a macroscopic distance before decaying into photons. We study the sensitivity of the proposed DarkQuest experiment at Fermilab to this signature. We show that the proposed upgrade to install an electromagnetic calorimeter will enable DarkQuest to explore untested parameter space by searching for the displaced decays of ALPs.

Search for New Bosons in Gluon-Gluon and Vector Boson Fusion Processes at the LHC and Development of Silicon Module Assembly Techniques for the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter

A search for heavy resonances decaying to a pair of vectors bosons is presented which utilizes events in which a hadronically decaying Z or W boson is identified using jet substructure techniques and large missing transverse momentum is found. Data analyzed were recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and correspond to 137 fb$^{-1}$ . The events are categorized as having arisen from Vector Boson Fusion process or not, and are characterized by their transverse mass distribution. The standard model backgrounds are estimated based on observed yields in control regions. No excess of events above the expected SM background are observed and limits are placed on the production cross section of Radion (spin-0), Wprime (spin-1) and Bulk graviton (spin2) particles. In adiditon, the high luminosity LHC and the CMS HGCAL upgrade are also presented. The assembly techniques and various tests for the Silicon module and the cassette are discussed.

Using Grover's search algorithm to characterize the Rigetti Quantum Computing Platform

Performance of the Rigetti quantum computing platform was tested during the period of time from 12/16/2019 to 05/18/2020. The Grover's search (GS) algorithm was used as a testing tool, in particular, 3- and 4-level versions of the algorithm. As a result, a number of hardware issues were revealed, so the algorithm was split to smaller blocks and individual gates, and all of them were tested separately. The fidelity decay was found to be due to both decoherent processes and coherent errors of the native hardware gates. These errors were estimated from RX gate benchmarks and were in a form of extra rotation of the quantum state. As a consequence of that, performance of the algorithm was shown to be strongly dependent on the native gate decomposition of the program. Suggestions and possible improvements of the future Rigetti runs are made based on the obtained observations.

Quantum system engineering for a next-generation search for axion dark matter. Final report

This project pursued two major experimental goals related to the quantum engineering of the ensemble of nuclear spin qubits, as a potential sensing platform for axion-like dark matter: (1) control the fidelity of spin ensemble state preparation, (2) characterize the coherence time of the spin ensemble under different drive conditions. We have successfully achieved these goals. We have experimentally demonstrated control over the polarization of the 207 Pb nuclear spin ensemble, using light-induced transient paramagnetic centers. We have also performed NMR measurements on the 207 Pb spin ensemble in solid ferroelectric PMN-PT, demonstrating the T 2 coherence time of 16.7 ms. We have used this approach to set new experimental limits on the EDM and the gradient interactions of axion-like dark matter in the mass range 162 neV to 166 neV. In addition, having characterized the magnetic resonance properties of the 207 Pb spin ensemble in solid ferroelectric PMN-PT, we have formulated the technical requirements needed to reach the quantum sensitivity limits in a magnetic resonance-based search for axion-like dark matter.

Contributions to the BeEST sterile neutrino search

Sterile neutrinos are hypothetical right-handed leptons that have been postulated as extensions to the Standard Model to help explain the origin of neutrino masses and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. Sterile neutrinos with keV-scale masses are also a promising candidate for dark matter. LLNL and the Colorado School of Mines are developing an experiment to search for sterile neutrinos by measuring the \Beryllium-7 Electron capture in Superconducting Tunnel junctions (STJs)" (the \BeEST" Experiment). When 7 Be implanted into STJ radiation detectors decays by electron capture, the neutrino escapes and the energy of the recoiling 7 Li nucleus can be measured with high accuracy. Using conservation of energy and momentum, the mass of the emitted neutrino can then be found. Sterile keV neutrinos would generate additional peaks in the spectrum, and the experiment uses high-resolution STJs to observe such a potential signal. During my internship, I contributed to different aspects of the BeEST experiment. I designed a UHV setup for X-ray spectroscopy analysis with STJs. It will allow high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of different materials to examine the broadening in the BeEST spectra, the origins of which are unknown but may be related to material effects inside the STJ detectors. The design accounts for the specific demands of the BeEST project, but provides a degree of flexibility that makes it useful for other potential STJ projects. Additionally, to test the accuracy of the electronics and data analysis routine, an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) will be used to generate simulated spectra that contain sterile neutrino signals of a specified mass and admixture. For this I programmed an AWG to output random STJ signals whose amplitudes follow the appropriate user-de ned probability distribution. The AWG signals can be input into the 32-channel preamplifier to simulate any spectrum of interest and test the uniformity of the amplifier chain, as well as the sensitivity of the data analysis.

Search for Neutrino-Induced Neutral Current Delta Radiative Decay in MicroBooNE and a First Test of the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess Under a Single Photon Hypothesis (submitted to PRL)

We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant Δ(1232) baryon production followed by Δ radiative decay, with a h0.8i GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE’s first three years of operations (6.80×10 20 protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state (1γ1p and 1γ0p, respectively). The background is constrained via an in-situ high-purity measurement of NC π 0 events, made possible via dedicated 2γ1p and 2γ0p selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the 1γ1p and 1γ0p selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of 20.5 ± 3.65(sys.) and 145.1 ± 13.8(sys.) events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC Δ radiative decay of less than 2.3 times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (CL). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of 3.18 times the nominal NC Δ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% CL, in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than 50-fold improvement over the world’s best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range.

Searches for New Physics in Neutrino Oscillations at the MINOS+, NOvA, and DUNE Experiments

Neutrinos are some of the most mysterious fundamental particles in Standard Model: they are orders of magnitude lighter than the next lightest massive particle (the electron), and they rarely interact with other particles. In the last 20 years, we have firmly established that neutrinos change flavors as they travel by observing the disappearance of muon neutrinos produced by accelerators and interactions of cosmic rays with the atmosphere; the appearance of electron neutrinos in muon neutrino beams; and the disappearance of electron antineutrinos produced by nuclear reactors. Almost all experiments are consistent with the existence of only three neutrino flavor states which mix with three neutrino mass states. However, there are a few experiments which have seen evidence for oscillations at frequencies incompatible with the three known states, which would suggest the existence of a fourth state, the sterile neutrino. This project supported searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, especially sterile neutrinos, in neutrino oscillations at the MINOS/MINOS+ and NOvA experiments. These efforts were enabled through the use of Deep Learning approaches which have revolutionized selection and reconstruction methods in High Energy Physics.

Bosonic Dark Matter Search Using SNSPDs (Technical Report)

Work over the past two years has clarified that SNSPDs will be an integral part of the search for bosonic dark matter in the 0.1-10 eV mass range. Their low dark count rate makes them uniquely capable of the sensitivity necessary to investigate parameter space not yet excluded by stellar astrophysics models and to exclude QCD axion models in that mass range.
