Development of preliminary design concept for a multifunction display and control system for the Orbiter crew station. Task 4: Design concept recommendation

Application of multifunction display and control systems to the NASA Orbiter spacecraft offers the potential for reducing crew workload and improving the presentation of system status and operational data to the crew. A design concept is presented for the application of a multifunction display and control system (MFDCS) to the Orbital Maneuvering System and Electrical Power Distribution and Control System on the Orbiter spacecraft. The MFDCS would provide the capability for automation of procedures, fault prioritization and software reconfiguration of the MFDCS data base. The MFDCS would operate as a stand-alone processor to minimize the impact on the current Orbiter software. Supervisory crew command of all current functions would be retained through the use of several operating modes in the system. Both the design concept and the processes followed in defining the concept are described.

Design and evaluation of a fault-tolerant multiprocessor using hardware recovery blocks

A fault-tolerant multiprocessor with a rollback recovery mechanism is discussed. The rollback mechanism is based on the hardware recovery block which is a hardware equivalent to the software recovery block. The hardware recovery block is constructed by consecutive state-save operations and several state-save units in every processor and memory module. When a fault is detected, the multiprocessor reconfigures itself to replace the faulty component and then the process originally assigned to the faulty component retreats to one of the previously saved states in order to resume fault-free execution. A mathematical model is proposed to calculate both the coverage of multi-step rollback recovery and the risk of restart. A performance evaluation in terms of task execution time is also presented.

The asteroid rendezvous spacecraft. An adaptation study of TIROS/DMSP technology

The feasibility of using the TIROS/DMSP Earth orbiting meteorological satellite in application to a near Earth asteroid rendezvous mission. System and subsystems analysis was carried out to develop a configuration of the spacecraft suitable for this mission. Mission analysis studies were also done and maneuver/rendezvous scenarios developed for baseline missions to both Anteros and Eros. The fact that the Asteroid mission is the most complex of the Pioneer class missions currently under consideration notwithstanding, the basic conclusion very strongly supports the suitability of the basic TIROS bus for this mission in all systems and subsystems areas, including science accommodation. Further, the modifications which are required due to the unique mission are very low risk and can be accomplished readily. The key issue is that in virtually every key subsystem, the demands of the Asteroid mission are a subset of the basic meteorological satellite mission. This allows a relatively simple reconfiguration to be accomplished without a major system redesign.

An update on the use of the VLA for telemetry reception

An analysis is modified to incorporate the actual structure of the command signal system of the very large array (VLA). In particular, in addition to the 1-ms command signal there is a data invalid signal that is generated. The command signals are transmitted to the antennas during the period in which the data invalid signal is on. This means that the gaps in the received data are really 1.6 ms long rather than 1 ms long. Simulation results with this taken into account show that the VLA will not support (7, 1/2) convolutionally encoded telemetry at acceptable error rates at any of the Voyager telemetry data rates. VLA will support Voyager encounters provided that either concatenated coding is implemented, VLA is arrayed with another receiving site (such as Goldstone), or VLA is reconfigured so that the gaps are rotated.

The implementation and use of Ada on distributed systems with reliability requirements

The issues involved in the use of the programming language Ada on distributed systems are discussed. The effects of Ada programs on hardware failures such as loss of a processor are emphasized. It is shown that many Ada language elements are not well suited to this environment. Processor failure can easily lead to difficulties on those processors which remain. As an example, the calling task in a rendezvous may be suspended forever if the processor executing the serving task fails. A mechanism for detecting failure is proposed and changes to the Ada run time support system are suggested which avoid most of the difficulties. Ada program structures are defined which allow programs to reconfigure and continue to provide service following processor failure.

Preliminary science report on the directional solidification of hypereutectic cast iron during KC-135 low-G maneuvers

An ADSS-P directional solidification furnace was reconfigured for operation on the KC-135 low-g aircraft. The system offers many advantages over quench ingot methods for study of the effects of sedimentation and convection on alloy formation. The directional sodification furnace system was first flown during the September 1982 series of flights. The microstructure of the hypereutectic cast iron sample solidified on one of these flights suggests a low-g effect on graphite morphology. Further experiments are needed to ascertain that this effect is due to low-gravity and to deduce which of the possible mechanisms is responsible for it.

Mariner Mark II and the exploration of the solar system

NASA's Solar System Exploration Committee has proposed the Mariner Mark II concept for the next generation of deep-space planetary observation missions, which will yield Voyager- and Galileo-quality focused data sets at a fraction of the costs associated with those spacecraft. Cost-limiting strategies under consideration include the use of reconfigurable designs, a multimission ground support system, and the incorporation of such selected new technologies as an all-X band telemetry system, fiber-optic rate sensors for use as an inertial reference system, image compression, and electronic and optical disk data distribution. It is believed possible to meet cost goals of 150-300 million/mission. The missions under consideration are comet rendezvous and sample return, main belt asteroid flybys, and orbits, flybys and probes of Saturn, Titan, Neptune and Uranus.

Packet communication system for a multi-beam beam switched satellite repeater

This paper presents the design of a packet-switched communication system using a multi-beam, beam switched satellite repeater. The protocol provides a combination of random access via Slotted ALOHA techniques and demand assigned access using collision requests. This allows efficient bandwidth usage and low average delays. Minimization of earth station cost was a major objective. This was achieved by transferring the bulk of the system complexity to the satellite repeater and the (ground) network controller. This centrally controlled protocol would allow greater system stability and would permit system reconfiguration in response to changes in traffic intensity. Sufficient signalling is also incorporated to allow both rate diversity to combat fading and timing corrections to account for satellite drift.

Dynamics and control of a Shuttle attached antenna experiment

Study results obtained to date identify the requirements for a large space system flight experiment. This paper considers the dynamics and control of an offset feed wrap-rib antenna attached to the Shuttle for such an experiment. Results reported in this paper are primarily based on the analysis and simulation of the combined Shuttle and antenna flexible dynamics model, and the Shuttle Vernier Reaction Control Subsystem. These results establish the technical feasibility of the Shuttle attached antenna flight experiment. Static and dynamic disturbances examined do not cause significant dynamic interactions to the experiment. Shuttle Vernier jets can be used for control purpose or as controlled excitation sources for experiment. Interface between the Shuttle and the antenna can be rigid or actively decoupled depending on the experiment objective. Key large space systems control technologies such as distributed sensing and actuation, system identification, figure estimation and control, and control for slew or reconfiguration can be validated with the experiment configuration described in this paper.

Reliability issues in active control of large flexible space structures

The unreliability of control system components was investigated in our attempt to deal with that problem. This matter is of concern in large space structure control because of the large number of components required to achieve specified performance in some situations, and the long operating period required between maintenance visits. The detection and isolation of component failures during system operation, and algorithms for reconfiguring control systems following detection and isolation of a failure were emphasized.

An approximation formula for a class of Markov reliability models

A way of considering a small but often used class of reliability model and approximating algebraically the systems reliability is shown. The models considered are appropriate for redundant reconfigurable digital control systems that operate for a short period of time without maintenance, and for such systems the method gives a formula in terms of component fault rates, system recovery rates, and system operating time.

A generalized behavioral model for rotating short period comets with spectral orbital elements and axial orientation

A generalized model for short period comets is developed which integrates in a fairly rigorous manner the isolation history of regions on rotating comets with specified axial orientation and the complex feedback processes involving heat, gas and dust transport, dust mantle development and coma opacity. Attention is focused on development, reconfiguration and partial or complete launching of dust mantles and the reciprocal effects of these three processes on ice surface temperature and gas and dust production. The dust mantle controls the H2O flux not only by its effect on the temperature at the ice interface but (dominantly) by its dynamic stability which strongly influences vapor diffusivity. The model includes the effects of latitude, rotation and spin axis orientation are included and applied to an initially homogeneous sphere of H2O ice and silicate using the orbital parameters of comet Encke. Numerous variations of the model, using combinations of grain size distribution, dust-to-ice ratio, latitude and spin axis orientation, are presented and discussed. Resulted for a similar nonrotating, constant Sun orientation models are also included.

Application of selected advanced technologies to high performance, single-engine, business airplanes

Improvements in performance and fuel efficiency are evaluated for five new configurations of a six place, single turboprop, business airplane derived from a conventional, aluminum construction baseline aircraft. Results show the greatest performance gains for enhancements in natural laminar flow. A conceptual diesel engine provides greater fuel efficiency but reduced performance. Less significant effects are produced by the utilization of composite materials construction or by reconfiguration from tractor to pusher propeller installation.

Fault tolerant architectures for integrated aircraft electronics systems, task 2

The architectural basis for an advanced fault tolerant on-board computer to succeed the current generation of fault tolerant computers is examined. The network error tolerant system architecture is studied with particular attention to intercluster configurations and communication protocols, and to refined reliability estimates. The diagnosis of faults, so that appropriate choices for reconfiguration can be made is discussed. The analysis relates particularly to the recognition of transient faults in a system with tasks at many levels of priority. The demand driven data-flow architecture, which appears to have possible application in fault tolerant systems is described and work investigating the feasibility of automatic generation of aircraft flight control programs from abstract specifications is reported.
