Fundamentals of SrCoO 3-δ Based Oxygen Deficient Perovskites as Cathodes for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

The local structure and oxygen stoichiometry in oxide systems have a profound impact on oxygen electrocatalysis encountered in metal-air batteries and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). However, this knowledge is often obtained under conditions different from the real working conditions of the material, resulting in misinterpretation and misunderstanding. This PhD dissertation aims to obtain the structure and oxygen-stoichiometry information of a class of perovskite oxides under their real working conditions in solid oxide fuel cells. Several perovskite oxides were selected for the study: Sr 0.9 Y 0.1 CoO 3-δ (SYC10), Sr 0.9 Y 0.3 CoO 3-δ (SYC30), SrCo 0.9 Nb 0.1 O 3-δ (SCN10) and SrCo 0.9 Ta0.1O 3-δ (SCT10). The local crystal structure and oxygen stoichiometry of these materials were systematically characterized with in-situ neutron diffraction (ND). The oxygen stoichiometry was also measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and iodometric titration methods. To establish the correlation among structure, oxygen stoichiometry and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, high temperature electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, oxygen permeation and single cell testing were also performed. In chapter 2, SYC10 is described to have a more symmetrical structure and $V_o^{··}$ distribution, and higher $V_o^{··}$ concentration than SYC30. Molecular orbital energy analysis based on the local structure of the ORR-active Co1-polyhedra indicates SYC30 has a higher Fermi level relative to O-2p energy level in the active Co1-polyhedra, and thus a higher motional enthalpy for $V_o^{··}$ migration. However, the ORR activity of Y-doped SrCoO 3-δ (SCO) are found uncompetitive with other popular catalysts. In chapter 3 and 4, systematic structural studies are presented for Nb and Ta-doped SCO, namely SCN10 and SCT10, respectively. The methodology of unrevealing the structure-activity relationships in chapter 2 is also found applicable to SYC10, SCN10 and SCT10 as presented in chapter 5. The electrochemical tests indicate that SCT10 is the best catalyst due to its excellent thermal and electrochemical stability. In chapter 6, SCT10 is evaluated in a real solid oxide fuel cell in the form of nanoscaled SCT10 layer coating on the commercial (La 0.6 Sr 0.4 ) 0.95 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF). The bilayer structured cathode shows excellent properties of coarsening-resistant, Sr-segregation-free and high ORR-activity.

Low Exciton Binding Energies and Localized Exciton–Polaron States in 2D Tin Halide Perovskites

We report aside from band gap reduction, little is understood about the effect of the tin-for-lead substitution on the fundamental optical and optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites (MHPs), especially when transitioning from 3D to lower dimensional structures. Herein, we take advantage of the spectro-scopic isolation of excitons in 2D MHPs to study the intrinsic differences between lead and tin MHPs. The exciton’s spectral fine structure indicates a larger polaron binding energy in tin MHPs. Additionally, the electroabsorption responses of the 2D MHPs demonstrates that tin MHPs have exciton binding energies 1.5–2× lower than that of their lead counterparts. Despite the lower binding energy, the excitons in tin MHPs are more Frenkel-like with small radii, small polarizabilities, and large dipole moments. These results are interpreted as consequences of small polaron formation and disorder-induced dipole moments. This work highlights the wide range of intrinsic differences between lead and tin MHPs as well as the complexity of excited states in these systems.

Ruddlesden–Popper Perovskites with Narrow Phase Distribution for Air-Stable Solar Cells

2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites have risen to prominence as stable and efficient photovoltaic materials because of their structural diversity, rich photophysics, and low moisture ingression. However, thin films processed from stoichiometric precursor solutions possess a broad phase distribution of different number of inorganic layers with random crystal orientation, crippling device performance. The effect of methylammonium chloride (MACI) and 3-amino4-phenolsulfonic acid (APSA) on the fabrication of perpendicularly oriented (PEA) 2 MA 4 Pb 5 I 16 films with narrow phase distribution using antisolvent and hot-casting processing techniques is investigated. MACI plays a critical role in suppressing parasitic n ≤ 2 and 3D-like phases. APSA performs the dual function of trap passivation and further narrowing phase polydispersity through strong coordination with Pb 2+ . Ex situ grazing-incident wide-angle X-Ray scattering (GIWAXS) and ultrafast spectroscopic characterization reveal uniformly mixed-phase distribution with disordered orientation in antisolvent treated films, while additive-assisted hot-casting treatment results in oriented, reverse-graded phase distribution, i.e., small-n on the film surface and large-n at the bottom. Arising thin films enable efficient p-i-n solar cells with an efficiency of 14.34%, and a V oc of 1.20 V, retaining 96% initial efficiency after 1440 h under ambient conditions (RH = 50-60%) without encapsulation.

The 12-layer trimer-based hexagonal perovskite Cs 4 Ca 0.7 Mn 3.3 Cl 12

Here, we describe the crystal structure and basic magnetic properties of Cs 4 Ca 0.7 Mn 3.3 Cl 12 , a previously unreported twelve layer (12L-) hexagonal (R-3m) chloride perovskite. Its crystal structure features face sharing MnCl 6 octahedra that form Mn 3 Cl 12 trimers. The trimers, which form a triangular array, are separated by corner sharing to layers of disordered single Ca(Mn)Cl 6 octahedra. The decreased intratrimer Mn–Mn distance yields stronger magnetic coupling within trimers than between trimers. The dominant magnetic interactions are antiferromagnetic (θ CW = –105 K), the effective magnetic moment per Mn 2+ is 6.5 μ B , and potential signatures of magnetic frustration are observed. Behavior consistent with short- and long-range magnetic order is exhibited at approximately 37 and 0.7 K, respectively.

Doping- and Strain-Dependent Electrolyte-Gate-Induced Perovskite to Brownmillerite Transformation in Epitaxial La 1– x Sr x CoO 3–δ Films

Much recent attention has focused on the voltage-driven reversible topotactic transformation between the ferromagnetic metallic perovskite (P) SrCoO 3-δ and oxygen-vacancy-ordered antiferromagnetic insulating brownmillerite (BM) SrCoO 2.5 . This is emerging as a paradigmatic example of the power of electrochemical gating (using, e.g., ionic liquids/gels), the wide modulation of electronic, magnetic, and optical properties generating clear application potential. SrCoO 3 films are challenging with respect to stability, however, and there has been little exploration of alternate compositions. Here, we present the first study of ion-gel-gating-induced P. BM transformations across almost the entire La 1-x SrxCoO 3 phase diagram (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.70), under both tensile and compressive epitaxial strain. Electronic transport, magnetometry, and operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction establish that voltage-induced P → BM transformations are possible at essentially all x, including x ≤ 0.50, where both P and BM phases are highly stable. Under small compressive strain, the transformation threshold voltage decreases from approximately +2.7 V at x = 0 to negligible at x = 0.70. Both larger compressive strain and tensile strain induce further threshold voltage lowering, particularly at low x. The P → BM threshold voltage is thus tunable, via both composition and strain. At x = 0.50, voltage-controlled ferromagnetism, transport, and optical transmittance are then demonstrated, achieving Curie temperature and resistivity modulations of similar to 220 K and at least 5 orders of magnitude, respectively, and enabling estimation of the voltage-dependent Co valence. The results are analyzed in the context of doping- and strain-dependent oxygen vacancy formation energies and diffusion coefficients, establishing that it is thermodynamic factors, not kinetics, that underpin the decrease in the threshold voltage with x, that is, with increasing formal Co valence. These findings substantially advance the practical and mechanistic understanding of this voltage-driven transformation, with fundamental and technological implications.

Arylammonium-Assisted Reduction of the Open-Circuit Voltage Deficit in Wide-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells: The Role of Suppressed Ion Migration

Surface treatment using large alkyl/aryl ammonium cations has demonstrated reduced open-circuit voltage (V OC ) deficits in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but the origin of the improvements has been vaguely attributed to defect passivation. Here, we combine the microscopic probing of the local electrical properties, thermal admittance spectroscopic analysis, and first principles calculations to elucidate the critical role of arylammonium interface layers on suppressing the ion migration in wide-bandgap (WBG) PSCs. Our results reveal that arylammonium surface treatment using phenethylammonium iodide increases the activation energy barrier for ion migration on the surface, which suppresses the accumulation of charge defects at surface and grain boundaries (GBs), leading to reduced dark saturation current density in WBG PSCs. Furthermore, with device optimization, our champion 1.73-eV PSC delivers a power conversion efficiency of 19.07% with a V OC of 1.25 V, achieving a V OC -deficit of 0.48 V.

Mixing Matters: Nanoscale Heterogeneity and Stability in Metal Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

The structural stability of the metal halide perovskite (MHP) absorber material is crucial for the long-term solar cell stability in this thin-film photovoltaic technology. Here, we use mixed A-site FA0.83Cs0.17PbI3 to demonstrate that nanoscale compositional heterogeneity can serve as initiation sites for more macroscale, irreversible phase segregation, which causes device performance degradation. Probing compositional heterogeneity on length scales that has not been detected with conventional characterization techniques, we analyze the tetragonal to cubic phase transition behavior to indirectly determine the level of nanoscale compositional heterogeneity in the initial films. Further, we show that the thermal annealing conditions of the MHP layer during film processing influence the initial nanoscale compositional heterogeneity, and changing these processing conditions can be used to improve the device performance stability. The insights into structural degradation mechanisms initiated by nanoscale compositional heterogeneity and the proposed mitigation strategies will help guide the way toward long-term stable MHP solar cells.

Electrical Switching and Imaging of Antiferromagnetic Spins in Perovskite Epitaxial Thin Films

Electrical control of antiferromagnets is essential for the field of antiferromagnetic spintronics that promises ultrafast speed and terahertz dynamics. However, the large family of complex oxide antiferromagnets such as perovskites have been largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate electrical switching and detection of Néel vector in LaFeO 3 epitaxial thin films with an epitaxy-enabled biaxial anisotropy, of which the switching behavior is understood by comparing to magnetic field controlled spin Hall magnetoresistance measurements. The electrical switching is corroborated by imaging of antiferromagnetic domains using X-ray Magnetic Linear Dichroism Photoemission Electron Microscopy. Electrical switching of 3-nm and 10-nm LaFeO 3 films was achieved over a wide temperature range of 25 to 300 K. This work offers an attractive platform for exploration of antiferromagnetic spintronics and other emerging phenomena such as potential insulating altermagnetism.

Hydrogen-induced tunable remanent polarization in a perovskite nickelate

Materials with field-tunable polarization are of broad interest to condensed matter sciences and solid-state device technologies. Here, using hydrogen (H) donor doping, we modify the room temperature metallic phase of a perovskite nickelate NdNiO 3 into an insulating phase with both metastable dipolar polarization and space-charge polarization. We then demonstrate transient negative differential capacitance in thin film capacitors. The space-charge polarization caused by long-range movement and trapping of protons dominates when the electric field exceeds the threshold value. First-principles calculations suggest the polarization originates from the polar structure created by H doping. We find that polarization decays within ~1 second which is an interesting temporal regime for neuromorphic computing hardware design, and we implement the transient characteristics in a neural network to demonstrate unsupervised learning. These discoveries open new avenues for designing ferroelectric materials and electrets using light-ion doping.

Sustainable lead management in halide perovskite solar cells

Despite the rapid development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) toward commercialization, the toxic lead (Pb) ions in PSCs pose a potential threat to the environment, health and safety. Managing Pb via recycling represents a promising approach to mitigating its toxicity. However, managing Pb from commonly used organic solvents has been challenging due to the lack of suitable Pb adsorbents. Here, we report a new adsorbent for both separation and recovery of Pb from PSC pollutants. The synthesized iron-incorporated hydroxyapatite possesses a strongly negatively charged surface that improves electrostatic interaction through surface-charge delocalization, thus leading to enhanced Pb adsorption. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of a complete Pb management process, including the purification of Pb-containing non-aqueous solvents below 15 parts per 10 9 , a level compliant with the standards of the US Environmental Protection Agency, as well as recycling of 99.97% of Pb ions by forming lead iodide.
