Modulational stability of rotating-disk flow

The problem of modulational primary stability of rotating-disk boundary layer flow for stationary modes was studied by using the method of multiple scales. The system of equations for infinitesimal disturbances is solved by linear stability theory to determine the modulated solution which represents the time and azimuthal variations of the wave pattern. The solution for the amplitude of the most critical disturbance indicates that the disturbance spreads out as the flow time increases and grows exponentially at the center.

Rotational modulation in IUE spectra of cool dwarf chromospheres. I - Data analysis and period search techniques

Time-sequenced IUE spectra of a number of a bright F-K dwarfs have been used to investigate rotational modulation in several important chromospheric and transition emission lines. Stellingwerf's phase dispersion minimization (PDM) technique forms the basis of this time-series analysis of these sparsely sampled, irregularly spaced observational sequences, which consist of no more than 13 spectra in any one season. In such highly sample-limited time series, the resultant PDM spectrum is greatly complicated by overlapping alias orders which invariably produce strong interference effects, but the deliberately irregular sampling has proven of value in the development of techniques to identify the intrinsic stellar flux modulation period. Two stars are selected to illustrate these new techniques in detail.

Optically induced absorption modulation in a periodically delta-doped InGaAs/GaAs multiple quantum well structure

Strong optically induced absorption modulation has been achieved in a periodically delta-doped InGaAs/GaAs multiple quantum well structure. The use of delta-doping has enabled efficient modulation in short-period structures using a low-power semiconductor laser. With an excitation intensity of 100 mW/sq cm an absolute quantum well absorption change of more than 9000 cm has been measured corresponding to a differential absorption change as high as 58 percent at the excitonic resonance.

High-contrast, large optical bandwidth field-induced guide/antiguide modulator

An electric field induced-guide/antiguide optical intensity modulator which has a very wide optical bandwidth from 1 to 1.55/micron which is the largest ever reported before for an intensity modulator. A TE mode ON/OFF ratio larger than 21 dB at 1.15 micron, and a propagation loss about 1 dB at 1.3 micron has been measured. The electrooptic effects, along with carrier effects have been exploited to increase the refractive index under the guide and adjacent antiguide electrodes by applying reverse biases to them.

Long-term photothermal/humidity testing of photovoltaic module polymer insulations and cover films

The life expectancies of Tedlar and other polymer films considered for use as cover materials in terrestrial photovoltaic (PV) modules were investigated by exposing them for more than 13,000 h on an outdoor test stand and for up to 10,000 h in several accelerated multistress environments. Visual observations and diagnostic analyses of weight and mechanical strength losses were periodically conducted to assess the nature and rate of degradation of mechanical properties and to assess the effects of film thickness and UV stabilizer content. Spectroscopic analyses of pristine and degraded materials linked weight and mechanical property losses to the underlying photothermal/photooxidation chemistry. It is shown that heavy doses of UV stabilizers prolong, while elevated temperatures shorten, the useful life of these materials; humidity plays only a minor role. The most heavily UV-stabilized films are expected to operate usefully in a PV module front-cover application for only five to ten years. The performance of none of the tested films appears consistent with the 20-30 year life goals of the PV industry.

Correlation-modulated chaotic scattering in the earth's magnetosphere

It is shown that due to correlations between subsequent separatrix traversals the chaotic scattering of thermal ions and energetic electrons in the plasma sheet of the earth's magnetotail is modulated, oscillating in dependence on the strength of the magnetic field inhomogeneity and particle energy. Correlation-modulated chaotic scattering creates non-Maxwellian features of the magnetotail ion distribution both in the CPS and the PSBL. It also causes an oscillating latitudinal variation of the auroral ion precipitation.

Large field-of-view KD*P modulator

This paper describes how FOV errors have affected the polarization measurements of the NASA Marshall vector magnetograph and how a polarimeter has been modified to minimize these errors. The design of a large-FOV (LFOV) KD*P modulator is discussed. The Poincare sphere is used to visualize the function of the different optical elements that make up the LFOV modulator.

Generic hypersonic inlet module analysis

A computational study associated with an internal inlet drag analysis was performed for a generic hypersonic inlet module. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of computing the internal drag force for a generic scramjet engine module using computational methods. The computational study consisted of obtaining two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solutions using the Euler and parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) equations. The solution accuracy was assessed by comparisons with experimenal pitot pressure data. The CFD analysis indicates that the 3D PNS solutions show the best agreement with experimental pitot pressure data. The internal inlet drag analysis consisted of obtaining drag force predictions based on experimental data and 3D CFD solutions. A comparative assessment of each of the drag prediction methods is made and the sensitivity of CFD drag values to computational procedures is documented. The analysis indicates that the CFD drag predictions are highly sensitive to the computational procedure used.

Study Of Dc Modulation Noise In Magnetic Recording Disks

Report discusses dc modulation noise in thin-film magnetic medium on magnetic recording disk. Presents study of statistical and spectral characteristics of noise and describes study of dependence of noise upon applied magnetic field, thickness of magnetic layer, and roughness of surface of layer. DC modulation noise attributed to nucleation of isolated regions of reversal of magnetization in recording medium, and to growth and coalescence of regions with increasing reverse applied magnetic field. Inhomogeneities in magnetic recording media, not roughnesses of surfaces, are dominant sources of noise.

An 8-PSK TDMA uplink modulation and coding system

The combination of 8-phase shift keying (8PSK) modulation and greater than 2 bits/sec/Hz drove the design of the Nyquist filter to one specified to have a rolloff factor of 0.2. This filter when built and tested was found to produce too much intersymbol interference and was abandoned for a design with a rolloff factor of 0.4. The preamble is limited to 100 bit periods of the uncoded bit period of 5 ns for a maximum preamble length of 500 ns or 40 8PSK symbol times at 12.5 ns per symbol. For 8PSK modulation, the required maximum degradation of 1 dB in -20 dB cochannel interference (CCI) drove the requirement for forward error correction coding. In this contract, the funding was not sufficient to develop the proposed codec so the codec was limited to a paper design during the preliminary design phase. The mechanization of the demodulator is digital, starting from the output of the analog to digital converters which quantize the outputs of the quadrature phase detectors. This approach is amenable to an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) replacement in the next phase of development.

A co-designed equalization, modulation, and coding scheme

The commercial impact and technical success of Trellis Coded Modulation seems to illustrate that, if Shannon's capacity is going to be neared, the modulation and coding of an analogue signal ought to be viewed as an integrated process. More recent work has focused on going beyond the gains obtained for Average White Gaussian Noise and has tried to combine the coding/modulation with adaptive equalization. The motive is to gain similar advances on less perfect or idealized channels.

Analogue and digital linear modulation techniques for mobile satellite

The choice of modulation format for a mobile satellite service is complex. The subjective performance is summarized of candidate schemes and voice coder technologies. It is shown that good performance can be achieved with both analogue and digital voice systems, although the analogue system gives superior performance in fading. The results highlight the need for flexibility in the choice of signaling format. Linear transceiver technology capable of using many forms of narrowband modulation is described.

Laboratory for Engineering Man/Machine Systems (LEMS): System identification, model reduction and deconvolution filtering using Fourier based modulating signals and high order statistics

Several important problems in the fields of signal processing and model identification, such as system structure identification, frequency response determination, high order model reduction, high resolution frequency analysis, deconvolution filtering, and etc. Each of these topics involves a wide range of applications and has received considerable attention. Using the Fourier based sinusoidal modulating signals, it is shown that a discrete autoregressive model can be constructed for the least squares identification of continuous systems. Some identification algorithms are presented for both SISO and MIMO systems frequency response determination using only transient data. Also, several new schemes for model reduction were developed. Based upon the complex sinusoidal modulating signals, a parametric least squares algorithm for high resolution frequency estimation is proposed. Numerical examples show that the proposed algorithm gives better performance than the usual. Also, the problem was studied of deconvolution and parameter identification of a general noncausal nonminimum phase ARMA system driven by non-Gaussian stationary random processes. Algorithms are introduced for inverse cumulant estimation, both in the frequency domain via the FFT algorithms and in the domain via the least squares algorithm.

On-line replacement of program modules using AdaPT

One purpose of our research is the investigation of the effectiveness and expressiveness of AdaPT(1), a set of language extensions to Ada 83, for distributed systems. As a part of that effort, we are now investigating the subject of replacing, e.g., upgrading, software modules while the software system remains in operation. The AdaPT language extension provide a good basis for this investigation for several reasons: (1) they include the concept of specific, self-contained program modules which can be manipulated; (2) support for program configuration is included in the language; and (3) although the discussion will be in terms of the AdaPT language, the AdaPT to Ada 83 conversion methodology being developed as another part of this project will provide a basis for the application of our findings to Ada 83 systems. The purpose of this investigation is to explore the basic mechanisms to the replacement process. Thus, while replacement in the presence of real-time deadlines, heterogeneous systems, and unreliable networks is certainly a topic of interest, we will first gain an understanding of the basic processes in the absence of such concerns. The extension of the replacement process to more complex situations can be made later. This report will establish an overview of the on-line upgrade problem, and present a taxonomy of the various aspects of the replacement process.
