High Temperature Oxidation Behavior of Ni-based High Entropy Superalloys

A new class of polycrystalline gamma-prime strengthened superalloys with alloy compositions of (wt%) Ni-20Co-13Cr-6Fe-4Al-3W-2Mo-(4-x)Nb-(x)Ti (x = 0,1,2) were subjected to cyclic oxidation exposures in dry air at 800 °C for 3600 h. The alloys were borderline chromia/alumina formers, showing good oxidation resistance relative to commercially available materials of similar composition. While all alloys formed alumina scales initially, only the alloy with the lowest Ti/Nb ratio retained an alumina scale for the duration of the exposure. Formation of a continuous layer of rutile TiO 2 at the alumina/alloy interface is proposed to cause eventual alumina failure for the alloys containing Ti.

High-temperature Superconducting Interconnects for Ultra-low Temperature, High-field Environments

Coplanar (with the ground) 20 cm long waveguides are manufactured from the YBCO-on-Kapton material. We investigate the effect of parasitic ground plane resonances on the performance of these waveguides. Here, it is concluded that dense rows stitching vias are essential for isolating the lines to a level below 60 dB at 6 GHz. We demonstrate a metalized via technology that is compatible with both the traditional Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) process and the epitaxial YBCO material. Stitching via fence with the via period 10 mm is shown as effective in suppressing parasitic resonances at 77 K.

Amorphous and Nanocomposite Magnets for High Efficiency, High Speed Motor Designs

This project developed metal amorphous nanocomposite (MANC) soft magnetic materials (SMMs) for a rare earth (RE)-free 2.5 kW motor with 4% increased efficiency. The Project modeled RE-free motor topologies. The project outcomes addressed: (a) metal to alloy processing & magnet core production; (b) soft magnetic laminate & core post-processing; and (c) producing a 2.5 kW motor extending to TRL-5.
