The general non-linear three-dimensional equation for acoustic potential is derived by using a perturbation technique. The linearized axisymmetric equation is then solved by using a finite element algorithm based on the Galerkin formulation for a harmonic time dependence. The solution is carried out in complex number notation for the acoustic velocity potential. Linear, isoparametric, quadrilateral elements with non-uniform distribution across the duct section are implemented. The resultant global matrix is stored in banded form and solved by using a modified Gauss elimination technique. Sound pressure levels and acoustic velocities are calculated from post element solutions. Different duct geometries are analyzed and compared with experimental results.
The primary scientific objective of the spectrometer is to provide a greater understanding of the role of energetic electrons in solar flares. This will be achieved by observations of high energy X-rays in the energy range from 20 to 200 keV with time resolution of 0.128s on a continuous basis and as short as 1 ms for limited intervals. The X-ray detector is an actively shielded CsI(Na) crystal with a thickness of 0.635 cm and a sensitive area of 71 sq cm. In the first year after launch, it is expected that approximately 1000 flares above the sensitivity threshold of 0.2 photons/(sq cm s) lasting for one second, will be detected.
The friction and wear properties of several refractory silicides, borides, and carbide coatings were examined. The coatings were applied to type 440C steel surfaces by radio-frequency sputtering. The friction and wear properties of the coatings were found to be related to stoichiometry and impurity content of the bulk coating as well as the degree of interfacial adherence between coating and substrate. Bulk coating stoichiometry could to large extent be controlled by the application of a negative bias voltage during deposition. Adherence was promoted by the formation of an oxidized layer at the interface. Deliberate preoxidizing of the 440C produced enhanced adherence for many compounds which is related to the formation of a mixed oxide transition region.
An appropriate form for the steady-state intracluster relativistic electron energy spectrum is derived, taking into account all the dominant energy loss mechanisms. The Compton X-ray flux is calculated and compared with the soft X-ray thermal flux. The amount of heating of the intracluster gas by energy loss of relativistic electrons in electronic and Alfven wave excitations is estimated.
Within the framework of unsaturated Compton disk accretion onto a supermassive black hole as a model for power-law active-galactic-nuclei X-ray sources (as opposed to the synchro-Compton model), the hot-inner-disk model of Shapiro, Lightman, and Eardley (1976) is compared with the disk-corona model with balanced conduction and Compton losses. Both can generate electron temperatures of at least about 1 billion K in the supermassive case but promise other observable distinctions. The sandwich configuration of the disk corona provides a natural explanation of why Comptonization is unsaturated.
The construction and operational characteristics of an extended life flexible radiator panel is described. The radiator panel consists of a flexible fin laminate and stainless steel flow tubes designed for a 90 percent probability of surviving 5 years in an Earth orbit micrometeoroid environment. The radiator panel rejects 1.1 kW sub t of heat into an environmental sink temperature of 0 F. Total area is 170 square feet and the panel extends 25 feet in the fully deployed position. When retracted the panel rolls onto a 11.5 inch diameter by 52 inch long storage drum, for a final stored diameter of 22 inches.
A search for gamma-rays in the 35-keV to 8.7-MeV energy range from the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 was made using an actively collimated scintillation detector. Upper limits to the flux in the 100-200-keV energy range are inconsistent with previous observations. Variability on a time scale of several months is indicated. Implications in terms of current models of NGC 4151 are discussed.
A spectral feature, apparently an absorption line, has been observed at an energy of 20.1 + or - 0.5 keV in the pulsed flux of the 3.61-s X-ray pulsar 4U 0115+63 by using the UCSD/MIT instrument on HEAO 1. The line strength, expressed as equivalent width, is 3.1 + or - 0.5 keV. Although essentially unresolved, the feature has a depth more than 60% of the continuum flux. If the feature arises by cyclotron resonance absorption near the magnetic poles of the neutron star, it implies a magnetic field of between approximately 1.8 and 2.5 x 10 to the 12th G, depending on the gravitational redshift (no more than about 5-40%).
The design and features of a new prototype Lixiscope (Low intensity X-ray imaging scope) is described. It is shown that in addition to good spatial and temporal resolution in the 20 keV to 200 keV region, it is capable of single-photon counting, imaging as well as good energy resolution. It is concluded that the device is well suited for future low-flux applications in astronomy, medicine, and industry.
This paper is concerned with data pattern sensitivity in carrier tracking performance of an AC coupled Costas loop with a suppressed BPSK signal. The signal amplitude suppression factor is derived as a function of data 'asymmetry ratio' - the ratio of '1's to the total number of bits in a period of a periodic signal. For an asymmetric pattern, the effect of AC coupling is noticeable whereas there is almost no effect for symmetric square wave. The tracking performance with an asymmetric pattern is worse than that with a symmetric pattern. However, it is also shown that as expected, the tracking performance of a DC coupled loop with an asymmetric pattern is better than that with a symmetric pattern.
Pulses that recur with a 4.27 + or - 0.01 minute period were detected on April 2, 1974 in the 20-64 keV X-radiation from the galactic center region. Apparently emanating from GX 1 + 4, a major contributor to the high-energy radiation from that region, the pulses were 1.25 + or - 0.42 minutes in duration. If it is in fact the same source that has been observed on all occasions, the period is twice that previously believed.
An analysis of X ray bursts form globular clusters gathered by the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite is presented. Publications were prepared on the cosmic ray induced environment, and maps of these radiations as functions of latitude and longitude were generated.
Sliding friction experiments were conducted with the metals yttrium, titanium, tantalum, zirconium, vanadium, neodymium, iron, cobalt, nickel, tungsten, platinum, rhenium, ruthenium, and rhodium in sliding contact with single crystal diamond, silicon carbide, pyrolytic boron nitride, and ferrite. Auger electron spectroscopy analysis was conducted with the metals and nonmetals to determine the surface chemistry and the degree of surface cleanliness. The results of the investigation indicate the adhesion and friction of the transition metals in contact with diamond, silicon carbide, boron nitride, and ferrite are related to the relative chemical activity of the metals. The more chemically active the metal, the higher the coefficient of friction and the greater amount of transfer to the nonmetals.
The results of a preliminary study on the design of a radiation hardened fusible link programmable read-only memory (PROM) are presented. Various fuse technologies and the effects of radiation on MOS integrated circuits are surveyed. A set of design rules allowing the fabrication of a radiation hardened PROM using a Si-gate CMOS process is defined. A preliminary cell layout was completed and the programming concept defined. A block diagram is used to describe the circuit components required for a 4 K design. A design goal data sheet giving target values for the AC, DC, and radiation parameters of the circuit is presented.
Results are reported from 1976 and 1977 observations of the galactic center X-ray source GX 1+4. On these two occasions, epoch folding at twice the previously reported period of about two minutes has resulted in an asymmetry between the shapes of the two resultant peaks in the light curve, indicating that the true period may be about four minutes. Mean intensity is shown to vary from pulse to pulse.
