Gasification of Waste Plastic to Enable a Circular Economy: Literature Review Focusing on H2/Syngas Production

This report briefly reviews 1) the physicochemical properties of feedstocks; 2) hydrogen/syngas production from plastic gasification and co-gasification of plastic with coal and/or biomass, including the discussions on effects of operating conditions on H2 production; and 3) the mechanism of plastic gasification, including the formation and decomposition of char/tar during gasification process.

Ion focusing device

Apparatus include a plurality of electrode arrangements spaced apart from each other opposite an ion propagation axis and defining an ion transfer channel that extends along the ion propagation axis that tapers between an input end that is situated to receive ions and an output end that is situated to couple the received ions to an input end of an ion guide. Methods include positioning a plurality of electrode arrangements at oblique angles opposite an ion propagation axis so as to form a ion transfer channel that tapers between an input end and an output end, and coupling the output end of the ion transfer channel to an input end of an ion optical element so as to direct ions in the ion transfer channel into the ion optical element. Related systems are also disclosed.

Small scale tensile testing technique for measuring grain boundary strength of neutron-irradiated materials in focused ion beam systems

Irradiation induced defects on grain boundaries (GBs) can lead to GB strength degradation and cause intergranular cracking in structural materials, affecting the safe operation and service life of nuclear reactors. Establishing the quantitative relationship between the strength and character/microchemistry for individual GB in an effort of integrating experimental measurements and multiscale simulations.

Numerical Method Improvements in Griffin for Pebble Bed Reactors with a Focus on the Computation of Burnup

Griffin, a MOOSE (Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment) based application targeting transient multiphysics modeling of advanced reactors, has been used recently to model both high-temperature gas-cooled and fluoride-salt-cooled pebble bed reactors (PBRs). Griffin uses deterministic methods for solving neutron transport and an Eulerian approach to model pebble movement. An Eulerian approach is also used to directly compute burnup instead of using a pass approach like other tools such as VSOP or PANGU. This work discusses verification efforts and numerical method improvements related specifically to the Eulerian modeling approach implemented for directly computing pebble burnup.
