Aerodynamic studies of delta-wing shuttle orbiters. Part 1: Low speed

Numerous wind tunnel tests conducted on the evolving delta-wing orbiters have generated a fairly large aerodynamic data base over the entire entry operation range of these vehicles. A limited assessment is made of some of the aerodynamics of the current HO type orbiters, and several specific problem areas selected from the broad data base are discussed. These include, from a subsonic viewpoint, discussions of trim drag effect; effects of the installation of main rocket engine nozzles, OMS and RCS packages, Reynolds number effects, lateral-directional stability characteristics, and landing characteristics.

Reproductive cell separation: A concept

Attempt has been made to separate mammalian male (Y) bearing sperm from female (X) bearing sperm. Both types of sperm are very dependent on gravity for their direction of movement. Proposed concept suggests electrophoretic force of suitable magnitude and direction may be effective means of separating X and Y sperm under zero gravity.

Design and evaluation of combustors for reducing aircraft engine pollution

Efforts in reducing exhaust emissions from turbine engines are reported. Various techniques employed and the results of testing are briefly described and referenced for detail. The experimental approaches taken to reduce oxides of nitrogen emissions include the use of: (1) multizone combustors incorporating reduced dwell times, (2) fuel-air premixing, (3) air atomization, (4) fuel prevaporization, and (5) gaseous fuel. Since emissions of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are caused by poor combustion efficiency at engine idle, the studies of fuel staging in multizone combustors and air assist fuel nozzles have indicated that large reductions in these emissions can be achieved. Also, the effect of inlet-air humidity on oxides of nitrogen was studied as well as the very effective technique of direct water injection. The emission characteristics of natural gas and propane fuels were measured and compared with those of ASTM-Al kerosene fuel.

Refraction effects of atmosphere on geodetic measurements to celestial bodies

The problem is considered of obtaining accurate values of refraction corrections for geodetic measurements of celestial bodies. The basic principles of optics governing the phenomenon of refraction are defined, and differential equations are derived for the refraction corrections. The corrections fall into two main categories: (1) refraction effects due to change in the direction of propagation, and (2) refraction effects mainly due to change in the velocity of propagation. The various assumptions made by earlier investigators are reviewed along with the basic principles of improved models designed by investigators of the twentieth century. The accuracy problem for various quantities is discussed, and the conclusions and recommendations are summarized.

Redundant speed control for brushless Hall effect motor

A speed control system for a brushless Hall effect device equipped direct current (D.C.) motor is described. Separate windings of the motor are powered by separate speed responsive power sources. A change in speed, upward or downward, because of the failure of a component of one of the power sources results in a corrective signal being generated in the other power source to supply an appropriate power level and polarity to one winding to cause the motor to be corrected in speed.

Access to uncombined titanium through an inhibiting film in sublimation pumping of deuterium.

Experimental demonstration of the possibility to gain access to sublayers of uncombined titanium through an inhibiting surface film in titanium bulk sublimator pumping by adding a thin layer of titanium to an apparently occluded surface. Though most of the work described was directed toward more effective utilization of titanium in bulk sublimation pumping for small positive-ion accelerators, the results presented should be of interest to others concerned with hydrogen pumping in general and the problems associated with inhibiting films.

Design and evaluation of combustors for reducing aircraft engine pollution.

This report summarizes some of the NASA Lewis Research Center's recent efforts in reducing exhaust emissions from turbine engines. Various techniques employed and the results of testing are briefly described and referenced for detail. Space shuttle lightning protection criteria document

The lightning environment for design is defined and imposes the requirements that the design must satisfy to insure the protection of the space shuttle vehicle system from the direct and indirect effects of lightning. Specifications, criteria, and guidelines provide a practical and logical approach to the protection problems. Protection against the indirect effects of lightning is intimately involved with the electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic interference functions. While this document does not deal specifically with electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic interference, it does deal with the interactions between lightning protection measures and measures employed for electromagnetic compatibility and control of electromagnetic interference.

Conceptual design study of advanced acoustic composite nacelle

Conceptual nacelle designs for wide-bodied and for advanced-technology transports were studied with the objective of achieving significant reductions in community noise with minimum penalties in airplane weight, cost, and in operating expense by the application of advanced composite materials to nacelle structure and sound suppression elements. Nacelle concepts using advanced liners, annular splitters, radial splitters, translating centerbody inlets, and mixed-flow nozzles were evaluated and a preferred concept selected. A preliminary design study of the selected concept, a mixed flow nacelle with extended inlet and no splitters, was conducted and the effects on noise, direct operating cost, and return on investment determined.

Elevation profiles of the moon

Five MHz radar data obtained from the Apollo 17 mission are used to determine elevation profiles of the moon. A change in range of one quarter of a wavelength (15 m for the 5 MHz radar) changes the round-trip radar range one half wavelength or 180 deg, thus allowing determination of the relative surface profile or slope with a high degree of precision. The technique of deriving the range or altimetry measurement from the range-Doppler data record on film yields a better understanding of the range accuracy. The presence of fade intervals can be observed directly and their effect on the profile measurement reduced to a minimum. The maria used to generate the center of maria are Western Procellarum, Serenitatis, and Crisium. The location of the center of mare relative to the center of figure and center of mass is identified.

Graphite fiber reinforced thermoplastic resins

Mechanical properties of neat resin samples and graphite fiber reinforced samples of thermoplastic resins were characterized with particular emphasis directed to the effects of environmental exposure (humidity, temperature and ultraviolet radiation). Tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear, creep and impact strengths were measured for polysulfone, polyarylsulfone and a state-of-the-art epoxy resin samples. In general, the thermoplastic resins exhibited environmental degradation resistance equal to or superior to the reference epoxy resin. Demonstration of the utility and quality of a graphite/thermoplastic resin system was accomplished by successfully thermoforming a simulated compressor blade and a fan exit guide vane.

The Identification of Scientific Programs to Utilize the Space Environment

A program to identify and develop ideas for scientific experimentation on the long duration exposure facility (LDEF) was completed. Four research proposals were developed: (1) Ultra pure germanium gamma ray radiation detectors in the space environment, intended to develop and demonstrate an X-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy system incorporating a temperature cyclable high-purity germanium detector and diode heat pipe cryogenic system for cooling, (2) growth, morphogenesis and metabolism of plant embryos in the zero-gravity environment, to investigate if the space environment induces mutations in the embryogenic cells so that mutants of commercial significance with desirable attributes may be obtained, (3) effect of zero gravity on the growth and pathogenicity of selected zoopathic fungi. It is possible that new kinds of treatment for candidiasis, and tichophytosis could eventuate from the results of the proposed studies, and (4) importance of gravity to survival strategies of small animals. Gravitational effects may be direct or mediate the selection of genetic variants that are preadapted to weightlessness.

Two-IMU FDI performance of the sequential probability ratio test during shuttle entry

Performance data for the sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) during shuttle entry are presented. Current modeling constants and failure thresholds are included for the full mission 3B from entry through landing trajectory. Minimum 100 percent detection/isolation failure levels and a discussion of the effects of failure direction are presented. Finally, a limited comparison of failures introduced at trajectory initiation shows that the SPRT algorithm performs slightly worse than the data tracking test.

The radial variation of solar flare proton anisotropies observed in deep space on Pioneers 10 and 11

The anisotropy of solar-flare protons (greater than 3 MeV) was evaluated at the time of maximum for each of 24 events measured by Pioneers 10 and 11 and was observed to decrease gradually between 1 and 4.7 AU. Since diffusive streaming is related directly to the effective diffusion coefficient parallel to the interplanetary spiral magnetic field, these observations provide a measure of the radial dependence of interplanetary diffusion parameters. Analysis of these results suggests that the spiral field increases gradually with heliocentric distance. An expression is given for the radial dependence of that field.

Manipulator system performance measurement

Free-flying teleoperator technology for satellite servicing is reported. The rationale for a series of manipulator system tests is presented. Data are reported on movement time in a fine positioning task using two different manipulator systems. The movement time data showed reliable effects of movement direction and index of difficulty. These data were considered to be baseline performance measures for the manipulator system used and modifications to the control and visual systems were suggested for future testing.
