Electroplated Polymer‐Modified Carbon Fiber for Performance‐Enhancing Composite Interfaces

Carbon fiber composite performance relies on the fiber-matrix interface for effective load transfer. To enhance interfacial properties between the fiber and matrix, often carbon fiber surfaces are oxidatively and covalently modified to incorporate chemical functional groups. By contrast, here, noncovalent electrodeposition of functional polyelectrolyte is applied onto conducting carbon fibers from aqueous solutions. A natural polymer, chitosan (CS), is electro-deposited onto the fiber surface, which undergoes multi-scale physical interactions. The bound CS layer with abundant amine functionalities reacts with epoxy moieties within the matrix to improve the interfacial properties. The scalable and energy-efficient electrodeposition eliminates traditional functionalization and sizing requirements of carbon fiber while delivering significantly higher mechanical performance with enhanced consistency. For continuous fiber reinforced composites, compared to conventional fibers, apparent interlaminar shear strength increases by 27%, reaching ≈86 MPa. The short fiber composites with only 2–11 wt.% fibers exhibit ≈20% increase in tensile strength with a peak performance of 120 MPa. Unlike traditionally treated and sized carbon fiber, this approach delivers coated fibers with long shelf-life and allows recovery of both CS in electrolyte form and carbon fiber by continuous electrochemical processing of the modified fibers with inverse polarity; thus, it promotes overall fiber recyclability.

Understanding the Role of Cesium on Chemical Complexity in Methylammonium-Free Metal Halide Perovskites

Mixed cesium- and formamidinium-based metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are emerging as ideal photovoltaic materials due to their promising performance and improved stability. While theoretical predictions suggest that a larger composition ratio of Cs (≈30%) aids the formation of a pure photoactive α-phase, high photovoltaic performances can only be realized in MHPs with moderate Cs ratios. In fact, elemental mixing in a solution can result in chemical complexities with non-equilibrium phases, causing chemical inhomogeneities localized in the MHPs that are not traceable with global device-level measurements. Thus, the chemical origin of the complexities and understanding of their effect on stability and functionality remain elusive. Herein, through spatially resolved analyses, the fate of local chemical structures, particularly the evolution pathway of non-equilibrium phases and the resulting local inhomogeneities in MHPs is comprehensively explored. It is illustrated that Cs-rich MHPs have substantial local inhomogeneities at the initial crystallization step, which do not fully convert to the α-phase and thereby compromise the optoelectronic performance of the materials. These fundamental observations allow the authors to draw a complete chemical landscape of MHPs including nanoscale chemical mechanisms, providing indispensable insights into the realization of a functional materials platform.

Directional Bonding in Decaniobate Inorganic Frameworks

Abstract Metal–oxo clusters offer an opportunity to assemble inorganic and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by a controlled building‐block approach, which led to the revolutionary discoveries of zeolites and MOFs. Polyoxometalate clusters are soluble in water, but more challenging to link into frameworks; the inert oxo‐caps that provide solubility are resistant to replacement or further connectivity. We demonstrate how the unique directional bonding and varying basicity of the decaniobate ([Nb 10 ]) oxo‐caps can be exploited to build 1D, 2D, and 3D inorganic frameworks. In nine structures, A + (A=Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs), AE 2+ (AE=Ca, Sr, Ba) and Mn 2+ demonstrate that the dimensionality of the obtained material is controlled by cation charge and size. Increased cation charge decreases selectivity for oxo‐site bonding, leading to higher dimensional linking. Larger cation radii also decreases bonding selectivity, yielding higher dimensional materials. Ion‐exchange studies of the A + ‐Nb 10 family shows exclusive selectivity for Cs + over other alkalis, which is important for radioactive Cs removal and sequestration.
