Ultrafast laser-induced spin–lattice dynamics in the van der Waals antiferromagnet CoPS 3

CoPS 3 stands out in the family of the van der Waals antiferromagnets XPS 3 (X = Mn, Ni, Fe, and Co) due to the unquenched orbital momentum of the magnetic Co 2+ ions, which is known to facilitate the coupling of spins to both electromagnetic waves and lattice vibrations. Here, using a time-resolved magneto-optical pump–probe technique, we experimentally study the ultrafast laser-induced dynamics of mutually correlated spins and lattice. It is shown that a femtosecond laser pulse acts as an ultrafast heater and, thus, results in the melting of the antiferromagnetic order. At the same time, the resonant pumping of the 4 T 1g → 4 T 2g electronic transition in Co 2+ ions effectively changes their orbital momentum, giving rise to a mechanical force that moves the ions in the direction parallel to the orientation of their spins, thus generating a coherent B g phonon mode at the frequency of about 4.7 THz.

Simulations of non-integer upconversion in resonant six-wave scattering

Resonant upconversion through a sixth order relativistic nonlinearity resulting in a unique resonance was recently proposed [Malkin and Fisch, Phys. Rev. E 108, 045208 (2023)]. The high order resonance is a unique non-integer multiple of a driving pump frequency resulting in a frequency upshift by a factor of ≈3.73. We demonstrate the presence, unique requirements, and growth of this mode numerically. Through tuning waves to high amplitude, in a mildly underdense plasma, the six-photon process may grow more than other non-resonant but lower order processes. The growth of the high frequency mode remains below the nonlinear growth regime. However, extending current numerical results to more strongly coupled resonances with longer pulse propagation distances suggests a pathway to significant upconversion.

Measurement of Zero-Frequency Fluctuations Generated by Coupling between Alfvén Modes in the JET Tokamak

We report the first experimental detection of a zero-frequency fluctuation that is pumped by an Alfvén mode in a magnetically confined plasma. Core-localized Alfvén modes of frequency inside the toroidicity-induced gap (and its harmonics) exhibit three-wave coupling interactions with a zero-frequency fluctuation. The observation of the zero-frequency fluctuation is consistent with theoretical and numerical predictions of zonal modes pumped by Alfvén modes, and is correlated with an increase in the deep core ion temperature, temperature gradient, confinement factor H 89,P , and a reduction in the main ion heat diffusivity. Despite the energetic particle transport induced by the Alfvén eigenmodes, the generation of a zero-frequency fluctuation that can suppress the turbulence leads to an overall improvement of confinement.

Cogeneration of hot electrons from multiple laser-plasma instabilities

Interactions of two plasmon decay (TPD) and side stimulated Raman scattering (SSRS) were studied using 3-D particle-in-cell simulations under ICF-relevant conditions for linearly and circularly polarized lasers. In the linear stage, SSRS took place under n e = 0.235n c and TPD dominated near the quarter-critical density surface and their growth rates agreed with theory. In the nonlinear stage, SSRS reduced TPD through pump depletion. Hot electrons were found to be first accelerated by the SSRS plasma waves and then by TPD plasma waves through a co-generation mechanism. Compared to the linearly polarized case with the same laser intensity, both SSRS and TPD were reduced due to the lower laser amplitude in the circularly-polarized case. As a result, a 30 percent decrease in hot electron flux was observed.

Reconfigurable spin current transmission and magnon–magnon coupling in hybrid ferrimagnetic insulators

Coherent spin waves possess immense potential in wave-based information computation, storage, and transmission with high fidelity and ultra-low energy consumption. However, despite their seminal importance for magnonic devices, there is a paucity of both structural prototypes and theoretical frameworks that regulate the spin current transmission and magnon hybridization mediated by coherent spin waves. Here, we demonstrate reconfigurable coherent spin current transmission, as well as magnon–magnon coupling, in a hybrid ferrimagnetic heterostructure comprising epitaxial Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 and Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 insulators. By adjusting the compensated moment in Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 , magnon–magnon coupling was achieved and engineered with pronounced anticrossings between two Kittel modes, accompanied by divergent dissipative coupling approaching the magnetic compensation temperature of Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 (T M,GdIG ), which were modeled by coherent spin pumping. Remarkably, we further identified, both experimentally and theoretically, a drastic variation in the coherent spin wave-mediated spin current across T M,GdIG , which manifested as a strong dependence on the relative alignment of magnetic moments. Our findings provide significant fundamental insight into the reconfiguration of coherent spin waves and offer a new route towards constructing artificial magnonic architectures.

Utah FORGE: Pump and Probe Test on an Intact Westerly Granite Sample

This dataset contains results from a pump and probe experiment conducted on an intact Westerly Granite sample with a diameter of 1 inch and a height of 1 3/8 inches. The experiment was performed within an aluminum triaxial pressure vessel (TEMCO) to investigate the non-linear acoustic parameters of the sample under varying axial pressures. The confining pressure was maintained at 4 MPa, while the axial pressure was incrementally increased from 1 MPa to 17 MPa before being reduced back to 1 MPa. 5 dynamic pressure oscillations of 0.5 MPa were applied over a 10 minute interval. The dataset includes pump controller data, linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) measurements, and acoustic data. The pump controller data tracks the confining and axial pressures, flow rates, and pump volumes. LVDT measurements provide detailed records of the axial displacement of the cell piston. Additionally, acoustic data captured by s-wave transducers is archived in a compressed file.

Orbital-selective time-domain signature of nematicity dynamics in the charge-density-wave phase of La 1.65 Eu 0.2 Sr 0.15 CuO 4

Understanding the interplay between charge, nematic, and structural ordering tendencies in cuprate superconductors is critical to unraveling their complex phase diagram. Using pump–probe time-resolved resonant X-ray scattering on the (0 0 1) Bragg peak at the Cu L 3 and O K resonances, we investigate nonequilibrium dynamics of Q a = Q b = 0 nematic order and its association with both charge density wave (CDW) order and lattice dynamics in La 1.65 Eu 0.2 Sr 0.15 CuO 4 . The orbital selectivity of the resonant X-ray scattering cross-section allows nematicity dynamics associated with the planar O 2 p and Cu 3 d states to be distinguished from the response of anisotropic lattice distortions. A direct time-domain comparison of CDW translational-symmetry breaking and nematic rotational-symmetry breaking reveals that these broken symmetries remain closely linked in the photoexcited state, consistent with the stability of CDW topological defects in the investigated pump fluence regime.

Optical phase conjugation in backward Raman amplification

Compression of an intense laser pulse using backward Raman amplification (BRA) in plasma, followed by vacuum focusing to a small spot size, can produce unprecedented ultrarelativistic laser intensities. The plasma density inhomogeneity during BRA, however, causes laser phase and amplitude distortions, limiting the pulse focusability. To solve the issue of distortion, we investigate the use of optical phase conjugation as the seed pulse for BRA. We show that the phase conjugated laser pulses can retain focusability in the nonlinear pump depletion regime of BRA, but not so easily in the linear amplification regime. This somewhat counterintuitive result is because the nonlinear pump depletion regime features a shorter amplification distance, and hence less phase distortion due to wave–wave interaction, than the linear amplification regime.

Summary Report of HERO WEC Test Article for Waves to Water: Electrical Power Take-Off

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) designed and fabricated the hydraulic and electric reverse osmosis (HERO) wave energy converter (WEC), which is a modular system that can utilize either an electrical or hydraulic power take-off (PTO) system to power a desalination device. The method by which this device can convert mechanical work to either hydraulic or electrical energy is by harnessing the energy from waves via a rotary output shaft. This report describes the electrical configuration, where a rotary generator replaces the pump in the hydraulic configuration to power a submersible pump and reverse osmosis unit via an electrical cable, rather than a hydraulic line/hose. This device is of a non-proprietary design where every aspect of the design is made public, including the physical designs, non-proprietary cost data, and electrical drawings developed for the build of this device.

Observations and Modeling of Ocean Circulation in the Seychelles Plateau Region

The ocean circulation around and over the Seychelles Plateau is characterized using 35 months of temperature and velocity measurements along with a numerical model. The results here provide the first documented description of the ocean circulation atop the Seychelles Plateau. The Seychelles Plateau is an unusually broad (~200 km), shallow (~50 m) plateau, dropping off steeply to the abyss. It is situated in a dynamic location (3.5-5.5S, 54-57E) in the south-western tropical Indian Ocean where northwesterly winds are present during austral summer and become southeasterly in austral winter, following the reversal of the western Indian Ocean monsoon winds. Measurements around the Inner Islands, on the Seychelles Plateau, have been carried out since 2015. Velocity measurements show that most of the depth-averaged current variance on the Seychelles Plateau arises from near-inertial oscillations and lower-frequency variability. Lower-frequency variability encompasses seasonal and intraseasonal variability, the latter of which includes the effects of mixed Rossby-gravity waves and mesoscale eddies. Here, a global 0.1-degree numerical ocean simulation is used in conjunction with these observations to describe the regional circulation around the Seychelles Plateau. Atop the Seychelles Plateau, circulation is dominated by ageostrophic processes consistent with Ekman dynamics, while around the Seychelles Plateau, both geostrophic and ageostrophic processes are important and vary seasonally. Stratification responds to the sea surface height semi-annual signal which is due to Ekman pumping-driven upwelling (related to the Seychelles-Chagos Thermocline Ridge) and the arrival of an annual downwelling Rossby wave.

Protecting backaction-evading measurements from parametric instability

Noiseless measurement of a single quadrature in systems of parametrically coupled oscillators is theoretically possible by pumping at the sum and difference frequencies of the two oscillators, realizing a backaction-evading (BAE) scheme. Although this would hold true in the simplest scenario for a system with pure three-wave mixing, implementations of this scheme are hindered by unwanted higher-order parametric processes that destabilize the system and add noise. We show analytically that detuning the two pumps from the sum and difference frequencies can stabilize the system and fully recover the BAE performance, enabling operation at otherwise inaccessible cooperativities. We also show that the acceleration demonstrated in a weak-signal-detection experiment [Jiang , PRX Quantum 4, 020302 (2023)] was only achievable because of this detuning technique.

Terahertz quantum-cascade patch-antenna VECSEL with low power dissipation

We report a terahertz quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL) based upon a metasurface consisting of an array of gain-loaded resonant patch antennas. Compared with the typical ridge-based metasurfaces previously used for QC-VECSELs, the patch antenna surface can be designed with a much sparser fill factor of gain material, which allows for reduced heat dissipation and improved thermal performance. Here, it also exhibits larger amplification thanks to enhanced interaction between the incident radiation and the QC-gain material. We demonstrate devices that produce several milliwatts of continuous-wave power in a single mode at ~4.6 THz and dissipate less than 1 W of pump power. Use of different output couplers demonstrates the ability to optimize device performance for either high power or high operating temperature. Maximum demonstrated power is 6.7 mW at 4 K (0.67% wall-plug efficiency, WPE) and 0.8 mW at 77 K (0.06% WPE). Directive output beams are measured throughout with divergence angles of ~5°.

Anisotropic time-domain electronic response in cuprates driven by midinfrared pulses

Superconductivity in the cuprates is characterized by an anisotropic electronic gap of d -wave symmetry. The aim of this study is to understand how this anisotropy affects the nonequilibrium electronic response of high-T c superconductors. Here we use a polarization selective time domain experiment to address the dynamics of electronic excitation of different symmetry in optimally doped Bi 2 Sr 2 Y 0.08 Ca 0.92 Cu 2 O 8+δ and measure the nodal and antinodal nonequilibrium response resulting from photoexcitations with ultrashort pulses with photon energy comparable to the superconducting gap. The response to long wavelength photoexcitation with pump polarization along the Cu-Cu axis of the sample is discussed with the support of an effective d-wave BCS model which suggests that such transient response could be ascribed to an increase of pair coherence in the antinodal region.

High temperature elastic properties of sub-stoichiometric yttrium dihydrides

Yttrium hydrides are considered as candidate materials for neutron moderation applied in microreactors (akin transportable tiny nuclear reactors) owing to their superior thermal stability and hydrogen retention. The evolution of elastic properties of these materials at elevated temperatures, needed for predicting the thermomechanical response and performance of the moderator during in-service reactor conditions, however, is lacking. Here, we report the Young’s and shear elastic moduli of three stoichiometries of bulk yttrium hydride (YH x , x = 1.61, 1.82, and 1.84) from room temperature to 1000°C. In situ temperature-dependent measurements of the longitudinal and shear wave velocities were performed using a laser ultrasonic technique while heating the sample in a vacuum-pumped heating stage. The elastic moduli increased linearly with increasing hydrogen content and decreased by ~10% during heating from room temperature to 1000°C in the three YH x compositions. The linear relationship between the elastic moduli and the hydrogen content in yttrium hydride was verified by atomistic calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The absence of abrupt changes in the temperature-dependent measurements of elastic modulus of the YH x samples suggested negligible loss of hydrogen at elevated temperatures. Excellent agreement was found between the measured and calculated dependence of the elastic moduli on the stoichiometry, thereby providing a new approach for investigating the effects of fabrication-induced parameters (such as porosity) on the elastic moduli. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the utility of the combined approach involving DFT-based atomistic calculations and measurements of the elastic moduli for the informative development of metal hydrides and can be used as a metric for novel moderator materials investigations for emerging microreactors and beyond.

Efficient (~10%) generation of vacuum ultraviolet femtosecond pulses via four-wave mixing in hollow-core fibers

Here we report the generation of the fifth harmonic of Ti:sapphire, at 160 nm, with more than 4 µJ of pulse energy and a pulse length of 37 fs with a 1 kHz repetition rate. The vacuum ultraviolet pulses are produced using four-wave difference frequency mixing in a He-filled stretched hollow-core fiber, driven by a pump at 267 nm and seeded at 800 nm. Guided by simulations using Luna.jl, we are able to optimize the process carefully. The result is a conversion efficiency of ~10% from the 267 nm pump beam.
