The current status of tunable diode lasers (TDLs) for spectroscopy and metrology systems is reviewed.
Liquid crystal tunable filters are useful in building compact multi-spectral instruments. The system is portable and adaptable for use in a variety of fields of study in the visible and near-infrared regions of the spectrum. We will present data from calibration targets and some applications, results of the spectral calibration of a spectrometer system, and results of environmental (vibration, radiation, shock, and thermal) testing. Data acquisition and system design are also discussed.
The literature on the use of tunable infrared lasers, for atmospheric trace gas detection and monitoring is about 25 years of age. However, this field, whith its myriad of potential application areas, has always been driven by the available laser technology. As new or improved laser devices become available, with characteristics which lend themselves to operation in compact, nearly autonomous instruments, their application to atmospheric science and environmental measurements expands.
We demonstrate experimentally a tunable third-order optical filter fabricated from the three voltage-controlled lithium niobate whispering gallery-mode resonators. The filter operates at 1550 nm with 30-MHz bandwidth and can be electrooptically tuned by 12 GHz in the linear regime with approximately 80-MHz/V tuning rate. With this filter, we have demonstrated 6-dB fiber-to-fiber insertion loss and 30-ns tuning speed, limited by the resonator buildup time.
The Tunable Laser Spectrometers (TLS) technique has seen wide applicability in gas measurement and analysis for atmospheric analysis, industrial, commercial and health monitoring and space applications. In Earth science using balloons and aircraft over 2 decades, several groups (JPL, NASA Langley & Ames, NOAA, Harvard U., etc) have demonstrated the technique for ozone hole studies, lab kinetics measurements, cloud physics and transport, climate change in the ice record. The recent availability of high-power (mW) room temperature lasers (TDL, IC, QC) has enabled miniaturized, high-sensitivity spectrometers for industry and space (1) Mars, Titan, Venus, Saturn, Moon (2) Commercial isotope ratio spectrometers are replacing bulkier, complex isotope ratio mass spectrometers.
Now a prototype of surface plasmon tunable filter has been fabricated at JPL, and the experiment measurement will be discussed in this paper.
Surface plasmon tunable filter (SPTF) is a new technology invented in Jet Propulsion Lab. When a white light is incident on a metal/air/metal structure, in certain condition, surface plasmon waves can be excited at one metal/air material interface; those photons in surface plasmon resonances wavelength range will be converted into the energy of free electrons in the metal than coupled into the other metal film, and re-radiate out the color light.
Last year, I had reported a novel phenomenon of voltage-induced color-selective absorption with surface plasmons (Appl. Phys. Lett. 67, 2749)...A prototype ( of a tunable notch filter) has been built using liquid crystal as the EO material.
