Coupled magnetostructural continuum model for multiferroic BiFeO 3

Here, a continuum approach to study magnetoelectric multiferroic BiFeO 3 (BFO) is proposed. Our modeling effort marries the ferroelectric (FE) phase field method and micromagnetic simulations to describe the entire multiferroic order parameter sector (polarization, oxygen antiphase tilts, strain, and magnetism) self-consistently on the same time- and length scale. In this paper, we discuss our choice of FE and magnetic energy terms and demonstrate benchmarks against known behavior. We parametrize the lowest order couplings of the structural distortions against previous predictions from density functional theory calculations giving access to simulations of the FE domain wall (DW) topology. This allows us to estimate the energetic hierarchy and thicknesses of the numerous structural DWs. We then extend the model to the canted antiferromagnetic order and demonstrate how the FE domain boundaries influence the resulting magnetic DWs. We also highlight some capabilities of this model by providing two examples relevant for applications. We demonstrate spin-wave transmission through the multiferroic domain boundaries which identify rectification in qualitative agreement with recent experimental observations. As a second example of application, we model fully dynamical magnetoelectric switching, where we find a sensitivity on the Gilbert damping with respect to switching pathways. We envision that this modeling effort will set the basis for further work on properties of arbitrary 3D nanostructures of BFO (and related multiferroics) at the mesoscale.

Resilient Distributed Frequency Regulation of Renewable Generators under Communication Interruptions

Modern power systems (MPSs) face significant challenges due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) and new types of loads such as electric vehicles (EVs). Traditional load frequency control (LFC) methods struggle with the intermittent, stochastic nature of RESs, the near-zero inertia of power-electronics-based generators, and the mobility of controllable loads and battery systems. This paper introduces a novel resilient distributed frequency regulation method to address these issues. The proposed method employs a state space model to represent the dynamic behavior of participating power sources while accounting for stochastic switching processes to model structural and parameter variations caused by disruptions such as generator connection/disconnection, communication interruptions, and physical faults. By integrating these dynamic and stochastic components, the method treats power grids as a comprehensive stochastic hybrid system. Our method enhances conventional frequency control by incorporating local stability control, neighborhood control decoupling, and coordination feedback. Theoretical analyses establish the stability, convergence, and resilience of the proposed method, and its effectiveness is validated through case studies.

Fluctuation and rotation in diffusion-influenced monomolecular reactions

Models of partially absorbing boundaries for calculating diffusion-influenced chemical reactions are examined analytically. The limitations of diffusion-equation and random-walk models are indicated; the presence of an ambiguous length parameter in a standard radiation-boundary-condition (RBC) model is demonstrated; the RBC model for a boundary with oscillation (at a rate much faster than the rate of thermal collisions) between absorbing and nonabsorbing states is considered; an alternative stochastically switching absorber (SSA) model is introduced and shown to be physically consistent; the equivalence of one-dimensional RBC and SSA models under some conditions is shown; one time passage is calculated for an axially symmetric three-dimensional SSA model with anisotropic absorption; and the analogy between rotation and stochastic switching is explored.

Optically induced bistable states in metal/tunnel-oxide/semiconductor /MTOS/ junctions

A new switching phenomenon in metal-oxide semiconductor tunnel junction has been discovered. With a sufficiently large negative bias applied to the electrode, incident visible light of intensity greater than about 1 microW/sq cm causes the reverse-biased junction to switch from a low-current to a high-current state. It is believed that hot-electron-induced impact ionization provides the positive feedback necessary for switching, and causes the junction to remain in its high-current state after the optical excitation is removed. The junction may be switched back to the low-current state electrically. The basic junction characteristics have been measured, and a simple model for the switching phenomenon has been developed.

Evaluation of a three-processor architecture for a satellite packet switch

The architecture of a microprocessor-based packet switch using three processors for use on-board satellites is presented. The operation of the switch involves three distinct functions, namely, the input, the routing and the output functions. Each of these functions is performed by one of the three microprocessors. The operation of the switch along with those of the corresponding software routines are explained. An expression for the throughput is presented. A queue theoretic model of the switch is developed. Analytical expressions for the overall average response time at the various queues are obtained. A number of graphs showing the average response time as a function of some parameters of the switch are also presented.

Digital control of high performance aircraft using adaptive estimation techniques

In this paper, an adaptive signal processing algorithm is joined with gain-scheduling for controlling the dynamics of high performance aircraft. A technique is presented for a reduced-order model (the longitudinal dynamics) of a high performance STOL aircraft. The actual controller views the nonlinear behavior of the aircraft as equivalent to a randomly switching sequence of linear models taken from a preliminary piecewise-linear fit of the system nonlinearities. The adaptive nature of the estimator is necessary to select the proper sequence of linear models along the flight trajectory. Nonlinear behavior is approximated by effective switching of the linear models at random times, with durations reflecting aircraft motion in response to pilot commands.

Coupling Surface Flow with High-performance Subsurface Reactive Flow and Transport Code PFLOTRAN

Water exchange between the surface and subsurface is important for both water resource management and environmental protection. In this paper, we develop coupled surface and subsurface flow simulation capability in a parallel subsurface flow and reactive transport code PFLOTRAN. We sequentially couple the diffusion wave-based surface flow with the subsurface flow governedby the Richards equation in PFLOTRAN. These two flow domains are linked with a boundary condition switching method that ensures continuity of pressure and flux at the surface-subsurface interface. We verify the coupled code against other existing hydrologic models and observation data using a number of numerical experiments. The coupled hydrological model exhibits good performance in strong parallel scaling tests. The new coupled surface and subsurface simulator significantly advance community simulation capability towards improving integrated hydrologic and biogeochemical understanding of complex systems such as watersheds and river corridors. A Generic and Multifunctional Electromagnetic Transient Model for Grid-Following Inverters

This paper presents a generic and multifunctional electromagnetic transient (EMT) dynamic model of grid-following (GFL) inverter-based resources (IBRs) using the PSCAD software platform. The features of the model include flexibility in selecting various types and combinations of DC sources covering photovoltaic modules, battery modules, and ideal DC-source modules as well as flexibility in selecting either switching or averaged models of the inverter. This model also covers exhaustive lists of controller algorithm, including open-loop/closed-loop PQ dispatch control, DC voltage and AC terminal voltage control, and conventional current control designed in the dq-domain, the ..alpha....beta.. -domain, and the positive-/negative-sequence domain. Moreover, this model is equipped with flexibility in selecting various types of current-limiting schemes, including saturation-based and latching-based current limiters, and anti-windup protection. Also, the EMT model is agnostic to the MVA rating and is suitable for interfacing transmission systems by complying with IEEE Std. 2800. The generality in the power circuits and the multifunctional options in the operation and control of the developed EMT model make it suitable for both academia and industry to study various power system aspects, including, but not limited to, the fault behavior of GFL IBRs, the impacts on the protection system, and the transient stability of a system interfaced with large numbers of GFL IBRs.

Bayesian filtering for model predictive control of stochastic gene expression in single cells

This study describes a method for controlling the production of protein in individual cells using stochastic models of gene expression. By combining modern microscopy platforms with optogenetic gene expression, experimentalists are able to accurately apply light to individual cells, which can induce protein production. Here we use a finite state projection based stochastic model of gene expression, along with Bayesian state estimation to control protein copy numbers within individual cells. We compare this method to previous methods that use population based approaches. We also demonstrate the ability of this control strategy to ameliorate discrepancies between the predictions of a deterministic model and stochastic switching system.

Hybrid model for solidification and convection

A hybrid model for continuum phase-change problems is presented. The hybrid model accounts for flow in regions of concentrated mush, dilute mush, and single-phase liquid. Scale analysis shows that, in dilute mush, the Blake-Kozeny-Carman relation may lead to inaccuracy in the continuum formulation for certain values of the Rayleigh and Darcy numbers. The hybrid model uses arctangent switching functions to switch on the Darcy flow and variable viscosity terms depending on the local value of the fraction solid. Two-dimensional example calculations suggest that the hybrid model more accurately accounts for transport in the dilute mush region.

HOLLOTRON switch for megawatt lightweight space inverters

The feasibility of satisfying the switching requirements for a megawatt ultralight inverter system using HOLLOTRON switch technology was determined. The existing experimental switch hardware was modified to investigate a coaxial HOLLOTRON switch configuration and the results were compared with those obtained for a modified linear HOLLOTRON configuration. It was concluded that scaling the HOLLOTRON switch to the current and voltage specifications required for a megawatt converter system is indeed feasible using a modified linear configuration. The experimental HOLLOTRON switch operated at parameters comparable to the scaled coaxial HOLLOTRON. However, the linear HOLLOTRON data verified the capability for meeting all the design objectives simultaneously including current density (greater than 2 A/sq cm), voltage (5 kV), switching frequency (20 kHz), switching time (300 ns), and forward voltage drop (less than or equal to 20 V). Scaling relations were determined and a preliminary design was completed for an engineering model linear HOLLOTRON switch to meet the megawatt converter system specifications.

A network flow model for load balancing in circuit-switched multicomputers

In multicomputers that utilize circuit switching or wormhole routing, communication overhead depends largely on link contention - the variation due to distance between nodes is negligible. This has a major impact on the load balancing problem. In this case, there are some nodes with excess load (sources) and others with deficit load (sinks) and it is required to find a matching of sources to sinks that avoids contention. The problem is made complex by the hardwired routing on currently available machines: the user can control only which nodes communicate but not how the messages are routed. Network flow models of message flow in the mesh and the hypercube were developed to solve this problem. The crucial property of these models is the correspondence between minimum cost flows and correctly routed messages. To solve a given load balancing problem, a minimum cost flow algorithm is applied to the network. This permits one to determine efficiently a maximum contention free matching of sources to sinks which, in turn, tells one how much of the given imbalance can be eliminated without contention.
