Computationally-driven discovery of second harmonic generation in EuBa 3 (B 3 O 6 ) 3 through inversion symmetry breaking

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with superior properties are significant for advancing laser technologies and applications. Introducing rare earth metals to borates is a promising and effective way to modify the electronic structure of a crystal to improve its optical properties in the visible and ultraviolet range. In this work, we computationally discover inversion symmetry breaking in EuBa 3 (B 3 O 6 ) 3 , which was previously identified as centric, and demonstrate noncentrosymmetry via synthesizing single crystals for the first time by the floating zone method. We determine the correct space group to be P 6¯. The material has a large direct bandgap of 5.56 eV and is transparent down to 250 nm. The complete anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical properties were also investigated with a d 11 of ∼0.52 pm/V for optical second harmonic generation. Further, it is Type I and Type II phase matchable. This work suggests that rare earth metal borates are an excellent crystal family for exploring future deep ultraviolet (DUV) NLO crystals. It also highlights how first principles computations combined with experiments can be used to identify noncentrosymmetric materials that have been wrongly assigned to be centrosymmetric.

A Polar Magnetic and Insulating Double Corundum Oxide: Mn2MnSbO6 with Ordered Mn(II) and Mn(III) Ions

A new magnetic insulator Mn2MnSbO6 with a polar crystal structure and an ordered Mn2+ and Mn3+ arrangement was synthesized under a high pressure of 7.5 GPa and 1300 degrees C. The crystal structure of Mn2MnSbO6, investigated by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, was found to be isomorphous with that of Ni3TeO6-type, space group R3. The non-centrosymmetric structure was confirmed by the second-harmonic generation measurements. The X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy measurement confirmed the nominal oxidation states of Mn22+Mn3+SbO6. Magnetic measurements indicate that Mn2MnSbO6 orders antiferromagnetically below 44 K and undergoes a field-induced spin-flop transition at 5 K. First-principles calculations indicate an antiferromagnetic ground state with up/up/up/down/down/down (uuuddd) spin configuration of the six crystallographically unique Mn ions in the c-axis doubled magnetic structure. The density functional theory calculations also substantiate the experimentally observed charge ordering of the Mn2+/Mn3+ ions and the insulating behavior due to a bandgap of 0.52 eV. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first double corundum oxide containing Jahn-Teller active Mn3+ ions.

High-Pressure Investigation of 2,4,6-Trinitro-3-bromoanisole (TNBA): Structural Determination and Piezochromism

Understanding phase transitions in energetic materials is crucial for developing predictive models of detonation. 2,4,6-Trinitro-3-bromoanisole (TNBA), an energetic material, was studied in its single-crystal form up to pressures of 45 GPa in a diamond anvil cell. The material was characterized by using X-ray, Raman, and optical transmission measurements. From single-crystal X-ray diffraction, the ambient structure of TNBA was determined which crystallizes in the P2 1 /c space group having four molecular units per unit cell. The X-ray data up to 9.2 GPa were fitted to a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state by using the parameters K o = 13.2(2.4) GPa and K p = 5.1(1.4). Between 6.8 and 7.3 GPa, a phase transition was inferred in TNBA from concurrent fading of X-ray diffraction, disappearance of Raman peaks, increase in sample fluorescence, and discontinuous color change. The new phase was consistent with an amorphous state of at least partially intact molecules judging from the presence of higher-order Raman modes and irreversibility of the Raman spectra upon release. Piezochromism was observed with the translucent yellow TNBA gradually darkening and becoming opaque black at ~25 GPa. This correlated to the absorption edge gradually shifting to the red in the visible spectrum. Signs of two possible additional structural transitions were detected in the 32.4–41.0 GPa range as suggested by a jump in the absorption edge, the irreversible changes in the absorption spectrum upon release to ambient pressure, and by the lack of Raman modes in recovered samples. Here, the crystal and electronic structures of TNBA were also investigated up to 10 GPa by using DFT calculations and crystal structure prediction (CSP) simulations. In agreement with the experimentally observed transition at 7 GPa, the simulations at 10 GPa found a bevy of polymorphs lower in enthalpy and higher in density than P2 1 /c. The lowest calculated enthalpy structure was determined to be P2 1 2 1 2 1 , being in a different space group than the ambient experimental result.

Metal Site Substitution and Role of the Dimer on Symmetry Breaking in FePS 3 and CrPS 4 under Pressure

We combine infrared absorption, Raman scattering, and diamond anvil cell techniques to explore the properties of FePS 3 and CrPS 4 under pressure, comparing our findings with a symmetry analysis, lattice dynamics calculations, and an examination of the energy landscape. Although these complex chalcogenides are considered to be members of the same family of materials, they display remarkably different phase progressions on account of the metal center orbital filling, character of the P–P linkage, layer corrugation, and differing size of the van der Waals gap. Here, we discuss the space group progressions, structure–property relations, and development of pressure-induced metallicity in terms of the competition between local and long-range symmetry transformations and structural distortion pathways. These findings place the properties of FePS 3 and CrPS 4 on a firm foundation for work under strain control and in the single layer limit.
