Development of an Optical Slice for an RF and Optical Software Defined Radio

A key component in the Integrated Radio and Optical Communications project at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Glenn Research Center (GRC) is the radio frequency (RF) and optical software defined radio (SDR). A NASA RF SDR might consist of a general purpose processor to run the Space Telecommunications Radio System (STRS) Architecture for radio command and control, a reconfigurable signal processing device such as a field programmable gate array (FPGA) which houses the waveform, and a digital to analog converter for (DAC) transmitting data. Prior to development, SDR architecture trades on how to combine the RF and optical elements were studied. A modular architecture with physically separate RF and optical hardware slices was chosen and the optical slice of an SDR was designed and developed. The Harris AppSTAR("TM") platform, which consists of an FPGA processing platform with a mezzanine card targeted for RF communications, was used as the base platform in prototyping the optical slice. A serially concatenated pulse position modulation (SCPPM) optical waveform was developed. The waveform follows the standard described in the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) Optical Communions Coding and Synchronization Red Book. A custom optical mezzanine printed circuit board card was developed at NASA GRC for optical transmission. The optical mezzanine card replaces the DAC, which is used in the transmission of RF signals. This paper describes RF and optical SDR architecture trades, the Harris AppSTAR("TM") platform, the design of the SCPPM waveform, and the development of the optical mezzanine card.

Standardization activity for the spacecraft onboard interfaces

The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) is an international organization of national space agencies that is organized to promote theinterchange of space related information. CCSDS is branching out to provide new standards to enhanced reuse of spacecraft equipment and software onboard of a spacecraft. This effort is know as Spacecraft Onboard Interface (SOIF). SOIF expects that these standards will be well used within the space community, and that they will be based on the well-known Internet protocols. This paper will provide a description of the SOIF work by reviewing this work with three orthogonal views. The Services View describes the data communications services that are provided to the users. The Interoperability view provides a description to users on how to use SOIF to interchange between different spacecraft data busses. And finally, the Protocol view, describes the protocols and services that are to be implemented in order to provide the users with the advantages of the SOIF architecture. This paper will give the reader an excellent introduction to the work of the international SOIF team.

A Photon Counting Ground Receiver for Free-Space Optical Communications

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is developing a photon counting ground receiver for free-space optical communications. The receiver consists of a fiber interconnect, superconducting nanowire single photon counting detectors (SNSPDs), and a field programmable gate array (FPGA) based receive modem. This receiver is compliant with the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) Optical Communications High Photon Efficiency standard, which is used in the low photon flux communications regime, including on the upcoming Optical Artemis-2 Orion communications demonstration. The receiver architecture is modular, can be scaled for data rate, and is designed with primarily commercial-off-the-shelf technology. Two fiber interconnect and detector architectures are being prototyped. The first uses a few-mode-fiber coupled to a 16-channel SNSPD array and the second architecture uses a photonic lantern coupled to 7 single-pixel SNSPDs. Photon counting, symbol timing recovery, demodulation and decoding is done using several FPGA cards. This presentation describes the unique features of the ground receiver, performance test results, and challenges with using commercial SNSPDs in free-space optical communications.

Standardization of XML Database Exchanges and the James Webb Space Telescope Experience

Personnel from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Project have been working with various standard communities such the Object Management Group (OMG) and the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) to assist in the definition of a common extensible Markup Language (XML) for database exchange format. The CCSDS and OMG standards are intended for the exchange of core command and telemetry information, not for all database information needed to exercise a NASA space mission. The mission-specific database, containing all the information needed for a space mission, is translated from/to the standard using a translator. The standard is meant to provide a system that encompasses 90% of the information needed for command and telemetry processing. This paper will discuss standardization of the XML database exchange format, tools used, and the JWST experience, as well as future work with XML standard groups both commercial and government.
