Solenoid Valve With Self-Compensation

New solenoid-operated miniature shutoff valve provides self-compensation of differential pressure forces that cause jamming or insufficient valve closure as in single-seal valves. Dual-seal valve is bidirectional. Valve simultaneously seals both inlet and outlet tubes by pressing single disk of silicone rubber against ends of both.

Switching Circuit Regulates Solenoid Current

New circuit requires no heat sink and is compact. Parts cost no more than those of linear regulator. Switching regulator repeatedly causes solenoid current to build up to maximum level, then to decay to minimum level: thus current ripples about commanded intermediate level. FET's dissipate significant amounts of power only during brief turn-on and turn-off intervals.

A unidirectional rotary solenoid as applied to stronglinks

The design goals and results of an advanced development stronglink are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on a new rotary solenoid concept to provide improved security during the handling, storage, transporting, and deployment of weapons to prevent accidental detonation of the weapons in the event of abnormal environments, such as impact, fire, crush, etc.

Latching Solenoid-Operated Ball Valve

Proposed solenoid-operated ball valve latches in open or closed position until energized to change position. Electrical energy consumed only during opening or closing motion. Valve ball contains central channel through which fluid could flow. Made of highly magnetically permeable steel. When appropriate coil(s) energized by brief pulse (or pulses) of electrical current at appropriate polarity, ball rotates clockwise until permanent magnets come to rest against hard stops in housing, and inlet and outlet ports aligned with central channel so fluid flows through valve. Magnets adhere to stops by magnetic attraction, latching valve in open position. To close valve, appropriate coil(s) energized by pulse (or pulses) of appropriate polarity to generate magnetic forces rotating ball counterclockwise until magnets make contact with hard stops, and inlet and outlet ports sealed.

The IRAC Shutter Mechanism: Residual Magnetism and the Rotary Solenoid

The Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) Shutter mechanism was originally presented in the paper, 'A Low Power Cryogenic Shutter Mechanism for Use on Infrared Imagers' at the 34th Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium, May 2000. At that time, the shutter was believed to be performing flawlessly and there was every indication it would continue to do so. In early spring of 2001, the calibration shutter, a rotary solenoid designed to be fail-safe open, remained in a closed state with no power to the electromagnetic coils. The ensuing investigation, subsequent testing, proposed remedy, and lessons learned are the focus of this paper.

Rapid-Chill Cryogenic Coaxial Direct-Acting Solenoid Valve

A commercially available cryogenic direct- acting solenoid valve has been modified to incorporate a rapid-chill feature. The net effect of the modifications is to divert some of the cryogenic liquid to the task of cooling the remainder of the cryogenic liquid that flows to the outlet. Among the modifications are the addition of several holes and a gallery into a valve-seat retainer and the addition of a narrow vent passage from the gallery to the atmosphere.

Experimental investigation of fuel temperature effects on transient needle motion and injection velocity of solenoid type diesel injector

Real driving emission (RDE) test conducted in sub-zero temperature conditions has been acting as a severe emission regulation over the existing test methods for diesel engines. In order to cope with this tightened regulation, many studies have been conducted to interpret the factors causing the deteriorated diesel engine combustion in cold operation conditions. The deteriorated fuel injection performance has been regarded as one of the key contributing factors but the governing mechanisms are not thoroughly understood so far. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of fuel temperature including sub-zero conditions on fuel injection performance by measuring the transient needle motion and injection velocity of a diesel injector using synchrotron X-ray imaging techniques. Here, the factors causing the deteriorated injector performance and their contributions are discussed thoroughly based on the results. The results showed that the injection duration was shortened as the fuel temperature decreased as a result of decreased needle opening speed and increased needle closing speed. The increase of fuel viscosity and bulk modulus was discussed as the main factors associated with these results. The total injection mass was reduced by lowering the fuel temperature not only by the shortened injection duration but also by the decreased injection velocity. These factors exerted near equivalent contribution to the reduced injection mass at low fuel temperatures.

Study of SIDIS Unpolarized Cross Sections from a 3 He Target with the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device at JLab

In this paper we present a detailed impact study of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering unpolarized cross sections' measurements using the proposed SoLID apparatus at Jefferson Lab. This type of data, collected at large Bjorken $x_{bj}$, moderate values of $Q^2$ and small values of the transverse momentum of produced hadrons, $P_{hT}$, allows to study transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions in a still poorly explored region. We present the projected results for charged light mesons based on simulated data. For the azimuthal-angle integrated cross sections we adopt the TMD framework up to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (N3LL) accuracy, while a simpler TMD parton model is employed for the study of azimuthal angular dependencies.

Computer Vision Techniques Used to Monitor the Alignment of Cavities and Solenoids in the PIP-II Prototype SSR1 Cryomodule

The alignment of the SRF PIP-II string components is studied as the acceptable beam deflection, offset and defocusing, which may otherwise cause beam loss. Simulations and measurements established that the maximum deviation of the beam pipe from the reference orbit should not exceed a small fraction of the beam aperture. To observe the translations and rotations of each single component within the cryomodule, optical instruments (H-BCAM) surveying highly reflective targets, installed in the internal assembly of the module were used. The alignment monitoring concept for the PIP II SSR1 prototype cryomodule, along with relevant measurements of the components’ position monitoring during coldmass cooldown is presented in this contribution. This development paves the way to new computer vision applications in the field of cryomodule assemblies in cleanroom environment, in which robotically-assisted operations have the potential to dramatically reduce the risk of chemical and particulate contamination.
