The Repair and Return to Flight of Solid Rocket Booster Forward Skirt Serial Number 20022

On April 5, 1991, a solid rocket booster (SRB) forward skirt serial number (S/N) 20022 sustained buckling damage during water impact after the launch of Space Transportation System Flight 37 (STS-37). As of that date, five forward skirts had been lost during water impact. Repair attempts began with the least damaged skirt available (S/N 20022). Sp ecial hydraulic tooling was used to remove buckled areas of the skirt. Afterwards, its aft clevis pinholes were found to be out of alignment with the redesigned solid rocket motor (RSRM) check gauge, but weld passes were used to correct this condition. Meanwhile, USA Analytics generated mechanical property data for buckled and subsequently debuckled material. Their analysis suggested that structural integrity might be improved by adding stringer reinforcements, stiffeners, to the aft bay section of the skirt. This improvement was recommended as a fleet modification to be implemented on a case-by-case basis.

LabVIEW Serial Driver Software for an Electronic Load

A LabVIEW-language computer program enables monitoring and control of a Transistor Devices, Inc., Dynaload WCL232 (or equivalent) electronic load via an RS-232 serial communication link between the electronic load and a remote personal computer. (The electronic load can operate at constant voltage, current, power consumption, or resistance.) The program generates a graphical user interface (GUI) at the computer that looks and acts like the front panel of the electronic load. Once the electronic load has been placed in remote-control mode, this program first queries the electronic load for the present values of all its operational and limit settings, and then drops into a cycle in which it reports the instantaneous voltage, current, and power values in displays that resemble those on the electronic load while monitoring the GUI images of pushbuttons for control actions by the user. By means of the pushbutton images and associated prompts, the user can perform such operations as changing limit values, the operating mode, or the set point. The benefit of this software is that it relieves the user of the need to learn one method for operating the electronic load locally and another method for operating it remotely via a personal computer.

Automated Serial Sectioning for 3D Reconstruction

Some aspects of an apparatus and method for automated serial sectioning of a specimen of a solder, aluminum, or other relatively soft opaque material are discussed. The apparatus includes a small milling machine (micromiller) that takes precise, shallow cuts (increments of depth as small as 1 micron) to expose successive sections. A microscope equipped with an electronic camera, mounted in a fixed position on the micromiller, takes pictures of the newly exposed specimen surface at each increment of depth. The images are digitized, and the resulting data are subsequently processed to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) features of the specimen.

Closed-Loop Analysis of Soft Decisions for Serial Links

Modern receivers are providing soft decision symbol synchronization as radio links are challenged to push more data and more overhead through noisier channels, and software-defined radios use error-correction techniques that approach Shannon s theoretical limit of performance. The authors describe the benefit of closed-loop measurements for a receiver when paired with a counterpart transmitter and representative channel conditions. We also describe a real-time Soft Decision Analyzer (SDA) implementation for closed-loop measurements on single- or dual- (orthogonal) channel serial data communication links. The analyzer has been used to identify, quantify, and prioritize contributors to implementation loss in real-time during the development of software defined radios.

Closed-Loop Analysis of Soft Decisions for Serial Links

We describe the benefit of using closed-loop measurements for a radio receiver paired with a counterpart transmitter. We show that real-time analysis of the soft decision output of a receiver can provide rich and relevant insight far beyond the traditional hard-decision bit error rate (BER) test statistic. We describe a Soft Decision Analyzer (SDA) implementation for closed-loop measurements on single- or dual- (orthogonal) channel serial data communication links. The analyzer has been used to identify, quantify, and prioritize contributors to implementation loss in live-time during the development of software defined radios. This test technique gains importance as modern receivers are providing soft decision symbol synchronization as radio links are challenged to push more data and more protocol overhead through noisier channels, and software-defined radios (SDRs) use error-correction codes that approach Shannon's theoretical limit of performance.

Novel Electrochemical Technique: Serial Open Circuit Potentiometry to Examine the Separability of Lanthanides in Molten Salts

The accumulation of lanthanide fission products in molten salts reduces the efficiency of pyroprocessing used nuclear fuel. Lanthanide fission products are notoriously difficult to separate due to their similar physical and electrical properties. We developed a novel electrochemical technique called serial open circuit potentiometry (SOCP) which allows us to delineate between metal deposition reactions with similar reduction potentials to great precision. SOCP has several advantages over traditional open circuit potentiometry including its ability to create 3D plots that describe all metal deposition reactions in a system. This information can be used to precisely determine equilibrium potentials of metal deposition reactions and quantify their error, determine nucleation potentials, and determine the nucleation and growth mechanism. In this work, we demonstrated the effectiveness of SOCP by studying molten salt mixtures containing CeCl3, GdCl3, and both CeCl3 and GdCl3 in LiCl-KCl eutectic.

A Framework for Compressing Unstructured Scientific Data via Serialization

We present a general framework for compressing unstructured scientific data with known local connectivity. A common application is simulation data defined on arbitrary finite element meshes. The framework employs a greedy topology preserving reordering of original nodes which allows for seamless integration into existing data processing pipelines. This reordering process depends solely on mesh connectivity and can be performed offline for optimal efficiency. However, the algorithm’s greedy nature also supports on-the-fly implementation. The proposed method is compatible with any compression algorithm that leverages spatial correlations within the data. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated on a large-scale real dataset using several compression methods, including MGARD, SZ, and ZFP.
