A Framework for Compressing Unstructured Scientific Data via Serialization

We present a general framework for compressing unstructured scientific data with known local connectivity. A common application is simulation data defined on arbitrary finite element meshes. The framework employs a greedy topology preserving reordering of original nodes which allows for seamless integration into existing data processing pipelines. This reordering process depends solely on mesh connectivity and can be performed offline for optimal efficiency. However, the algorithm’s greedy nature also supports on-the-fly implementation. The proposed method is compatible with any compression algorithm that leverages spatial correlations within the data. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated on a large-scale real dataset using several compression methods, including MGARD, SZ, and ZFP.

Conversion Helper 4 Easy Serialization Of Exi (ch4ese)

CH4ESE is an EXI conversion tool developed in Python3 that utilizes the open-source EXIficient implementation of the W3C EXI format specification. CH4ESE can be used to translate to and from EXI format using the command line with input data or using the web server for live-translation.

Changes in trachoma indicators in Kiribati with two rounds of azithromycin mass drug administration, measured in serial population-based surveys

Baseline mapping in the two major population centers of Kiribati showed that trachoma was a public health problem in need of programmatic interventions. After conducting two annual rounds of antibiotic mass drug administration (MDA), Kiribati undertook trachoma impact surveys in 2019, using standardized two-stage cluster surveys in the evaluation units of Kiritimati Island and Tarawa. In Kiritimati, 516 households were visited and in Tarawa, 772 households were visited. Nearly all households had a drinking water source and access to an improved latrine. The prevalence of trachomatous trichiasis remained above the elimination threshold (0.2% in ≥15-year-olds) and was virtually unchanged from baseline. The prevalence of trachomatous inflammation—follicular (TF) in 1–9-year-olds decreased by approximately 40% from baseline in both evaluation units but remained above the 5% TF prevalence threshold for stopping MDA. TF prevalence at impact survey was 11.5% in Kiritimati and 17.9% in Tarawa. Infection prevalence in 1–9-year-olds by PCR was 0.96% in Kiritimati and 3.3% in Tarawa. Using a multiplex bead assay to measure antibodies to the C. trachomatis antigen Pgp3, seroprevalence in 1–9-year-olds was 30.2% in Kiritimati and 31.4% in Tarawa. The seroconversion rate, in seroconversion events/100 children/year, was 9.0 in Kiritimati and 9.2 in Tarawa. Seroprevalence and seroconversion rates were both assessed by four different assays, with strong agreement between tests. These results show that, despite decreases in indicators associated with infection at impact survey, trachoma remains a public health problem in Kiribati, and provide additional information about changes in serological indicators after MDA.

Load Test of Alum-a-Lift Serial No. 33053261

An Alum-A-Lift A800CSPD-60 (Lift) was procured to support mechanical testing of programmatic equipment. This testing will take place within the Bldg. 131 Hi Bay. The design of the Lift procured for the purposes at LLNL was a modification of a machine that had previously been engineered and sold by Alum-a-Lift, see Fig. 1. The modification was to shorten the boom from a 56 in. length to a 28 in. length. The modified design is illustrated in Fig. 2. The Lift was fabricated and shipped to LLNL, received ~ June 2022. Upon arrival, it was successfully evaluated for “no-load” performance capability. Upon inspection of the documentation provided by Alum-a-Lift, it was noted that the load test was performed to qualify the machine for a lifting capacity of 200 lb. The LLNL requirement was that the capacity of the machine be 400 lb. Conversations with the vendor, Alum-A-Lift, followed this discovery. Rather than send the machine back to the vendor for load testing, discussions concurred that LLNL would load test the machine and Alum-A-Lift would provide the relevant load test placard to be placed on the machine subsequent to the successful load test. This MESN provides documentation of the load test to qualify the Alum-a-Lift to its’ rated capacity of 400 lb.

Redox-controlled reorganization and flavin strain within the ribonucleotide reductase R2b–NrdI complex monitored by serial femtosecond crystallography

Redox reactions are central to biochemistry and are both controlled by and induce protein structural changes. Here, we describe structural rearrangements and crosstalk within the Bacillus cereus ribonucleotide reductase R2b–NrdI complex, a di-metal carboxylate-flavoprotein system, as part of the mechanism generating the essential catalytic free radical of the enzyme. Femtosecond crystallography at an X-ray free electron laser was utilized to obtain structures at room temperature in defined redox states without suffering photoreduction. Together with density functional theory calculations, we show that the flavin is under steric strain in the R2b–NrdI protein complex, likely tuning its redox properties to promote superoxide generation. Moreover, a binding site in close vicinity to the expected flavin O 2 interaction site is observed to be controlled by the redox state of the flavin and linked to the channel proposed to funnel the produced superoxide species from NrdI to the di-manganese site in protein R2b. These specific features are coupled to further structural changes around the R2b–NrdI interaction surface. The mechanistic implications for the control of reactive oxygen species and radical generation in protein R2b are discussed

Serial Moire scanning phase contrast x-ray imaging

Method include emitting x-rays from an x-ray source, directing a first portion of the x-rays through an object grating situated adjacent to an object while the object is scanned relative to the object grating along a scan direction, directing a second portion of the x-rays through the object and subsequently through a detector grating without transmitting through the object grating, wherein the object grating and detector grating are adjacently arranged in a field of view of the x-rays sequentially with respect to each other in the scan direction, and receiving the first portion transmitted through the object and object grating with a first portion of a detector and receiving the second portion transmitted through the object and the detector grating with a second portion of the detector adjacent to the first portion of the detector. Systems are also disclosed, along with related techniques for beam hardening correction.
