A diffusion model for use with directional samplers

The paper presents a mathematical model for describing dispersion processes of airborne particles in the atmosphere. The process is described as a superposition of independent Brownian motion processes with drifts and a boundary at zero. It is assumed that the terrain is flat and of a homogeneous roughness. All sources are assumed to be point sources. The time dependencies of emission rates, wind speed, wind direction, and atmospheric conditions are taken into account.

Time variation of urban mass loading measured by small filters compared to high-volume samplers

The paper shows how the use of an instrument with 12 small-diameter (47-mm) membrane filters (samples taken for 12 2-hr periods), in conjunction with wind direction measurements, is a suitable technique for observing mass loading levels on a time-resolved basis. In contrast, standard high-volume instruments are unable to demonstrate specialized events because of the long collection period involved. A comparison is presented for a typical day where the mass loading changed during the observed period but could not be observed with a single high-volume sample measurement. Time-averaged mass loading for 2-hr periods is demonstrated to be a useful tool in developing trend analysis for diurnal effects.

Automated syringe sampler

A number of sampling services are disposed in a rack which slides into a housing. In response to a signal from an antenna, the circutry elements are activated which provide power individually, collectively, or selectively to a servomechanism thereby moving an actuator arm and the attached jawed bracket supporting an evaculated tube towards a stationary needle. One open end of the needle extends through the side wall of a conduit to the interior and the other open end is maintained within the protective sleeve, supported by a bifurcated bracket. A septum in punctured by the end of the needle within the sleeve and a sample of the fluid medium in the conduit flows through the needle and is transferred to a tube. The signal to the servo is then reversed and the actuator arm moves the tube back to its original position permitting the septum to expand and seal the hole made by the needle. The jawed bracket is attached by pivot to the actuator to facilitate tube replacement.

Mobile sampler for use in acquiring samples of terrestrial atmospheric gases

Samples of terrestrial atmospheric gasses from a free body of such gasses using a device characterized by a plurality of tubular bodies adapted to be mounted in side by side relation on a motorized highway vehicle in mutual parallelism with the axis of the normal path of travel for the vehicles. Each of the bodies is of a cylindrical configuration and has an axial opening at each of its opposite ends through which a linear flow path is defined. A pair of pivotally supported, spring-biased sealing caps is mounted adjacent to the ends of the body and continuously urged into a hermetic sealing relationship. A restraint for securing the caps against spring-urged pivotal displacement, includes a separable, normally tensioned line interconnecting the caps and an operable release mechanism for simultaneously releasing the caps for spring-urged displacement. A hot wire cutter is included for separating the line, whereby samples of air are trapped in the body as the caps are spring-driven to assume an hermetically sealed relation with the openings defined in each of the opposite ends of the body.

Induced Environment Contamination Monitor (IECM), air sampler - Results from the Space Transport System (STS-2) flight

An investigation involving sampling the rapidly changing environment of the Shuttle cargo bay is considered. Four time-integrated samples and one rapid acquisition sample were collected to determine the types and quantities of contaminants present during ascent and descent of the Shuttle. The sampling times for the various bottles were controlled by valves operated by the Data Acquisition and Control System (DACS) of the IECM. Many of the observed species were found to be common solvents used in cleaning surfaces. When the actual volume sampled is taken into account, the relative mass of organics sampled during descent is about 20 percent less than during ascent.

Accurate Airborne Particle Sampler

Air inducted isokinetically into centrifugal collector. Cloud drop collector accurately and efficiently samples droplets and rejects aerosol particles. Number of these collectors connected in series, each designed that largest size fraction of droplets captured in first one and successively smaller size fractions captured in others. By analyzing each size fraction, chemical composition of cloud droplets related to drop size.

Synchronous Photodiode-Signal Sampler

Synchronous sampling circuit increases signal-to-noise ratio of measurements of chopped signal of known phase and frequency in presence of low-frequency or dc background noise. Used with linear array of photoelectric sensors for locating edge of metal plate. Multiplexing circuit cycles through 16 light-emitting-diode/photodiode pairs, under computer control. Synchronized with multiplexer so edge detector makes one background-subtracted signal measurement per emitter/detector pair in turn.

Energy storage considerations for a robotic Mars surface sampler

A Mars Rover capable of obtaining surface samples will need a power system for motive power and to power scientific instrumentation. Several different power systems are considered along with a discussion of the location options. The weight and volume advantages of the different systems are described for a particular power profile. The conclusions are that a Mars Rover Sample Return Mission and Extended Mission can be accomplished utilizing photovoltaics and electrochemical storage.

Aerodynamic design of gas and aerosol samplers for aircraft

The aerodynamic design of airborne probes for the capture of air and aerosols is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the key parameters that affect proper sampling, such as inlet-lip design, internal duct components for low pressure drop, and exhaust geometry. Inlet designs that avoid sonic flow conditions on the lip and flow separation in the duct are shown. Cross-stream velocities of aerosols are expressed in terms of droplet density and diameter. Flow curvature, which can cause aerosols to cross streamlines and impact on probe walls, can be minimized by means of a proper inlet shape and proper probe orientation, and by avoiding bends upstream of the test section. A NASA panel code called PMARC was used successfully to compute streamlines around aircraft and probes, as well as to compute to local velocity and pressure distributions in inlets. A NACA 1-series inlet with modified lip radius was used for the airborne capture of stratospheric chlorine monoxide at high altitude and high flight speed. The device has a two-stage inlet that decelerates the inflow with little disturbance to the flow through the test section. Diffuser design, exhaust hood design, valve loss, and corner vane geometry are discussed.

Whole air sampler

Minor constituents play an important role in upper atmospheric photochemistry and serve as tracers in transport and mixing studies in tropospheric stratospheric exchange processes. Measurements of trace gases are essential to an understanding of the mechanisms by which minor constituents originating in the troposphere, both naturally occurring and anthropogenic, reach the stratosphere; data on tracer distributions thus acquired are important in the development of models for predicting photochemical effects in the stratosphere.
