High torque CMG rotary actuator

A high torque rotary actuator was designed, fabricated and tested. Exacting requirements were placed on performance and physical characteristics of the actuator, particularly in the area of stiffness, backlash, torque ripple, power and size and weight. A brushless dc motor was designed utilizing rare earth magnets to meet power and weight requirements. A 26-to-1 planetary roller gear transmission was selected to best meet overall requirements. The transmission utilizes parallel gear and roller paths to minimize backlash and breakaway torque.

Effects of atmospheric irregularities on sonic-boom propagation.

A review is given of information obtained in recent years concerning the effects on sonic-boom signatures of departures of the atmosphere from a perfectly stratified time invariant model. These effects include the observed random variations in boom overpressures from those expected for a stratified atmosphere, the anomalously large and variable rise times, and the occurrence of spiked or rounded waveforms rather than the characteristic N waves. The extent of the variability in data recorded during actual flight tests is summarized in the form of histograms, representing experimentally obtained probability density functions. The physical mechanisms believed to be responsible for the variations and the anomalous features in the signatures are described. These include refraction and subsequent wavefront rippling by turbulence, the possible focusing or defocusing of rays, the formation of caustics, and the phenomenon of wavefront folding, diffraction, and scattering. Recent statistical theories of shock propagation through a turbulent atmosphere proposed by Crow, George and Plotkin, Pierce, Horning, and others are reviewed.

The plasmapause as measured in positive ions.

Use of extensions of the existing theory of magnetospheric convection to describe the dynamics of the plasmasphere and the variation in the plasmapause location. The equatorial local time plane is divided into three separate and physically distinct regions, the bulge region, the nightside region, and the dayside region, corresponding to local times of 1500 to 2200 hrs, 2200 to 0600 hrs, and 0600 to 1500 hrs, respectively. The characteristics predicted by the model in the bulge region are: presence of the bulge at dusk, 1/R to the 4th power radial dependence of plasma concentration, and large fluctuations in plasma density at the plasmapause and plasma detachment. In the nightside region the predicted characteristics are: rapid response to magnetic activity changes, formative region for plasmasphere ripples, and the formative region for the dayside plasmapause location. The model also predicts the dayside plasmasphere characteristics, such as the slow response to magnetic activity changes, and filling of the plasmasphere from the ionosphere, including the formation of a 'double plasmapause.'

The study and development of an active scattering particle size spectrometer for space environments

The work is reported on laser operation in a vacuum, and the theoretical response of active scattering particle spectrometers (ASPS). The theoretical considerations connected with the thermal, interferometric and electrical problems that influence laser operation under vacuum conditions are discussed along with the scattering signal pulses with high frequency ripple content which were observed while operating the ASPS.

Mariner 9 observations of the surface of Mars in the north polar region.

During the Mariner 9 extended mission the recession of the north polar ice caps was monitored for 130 days. The edge of the cap displayed a peculiar polygonal outline during most of this period. Regional topographic control is suggested as the most likely cause of the polygonality. Whereas densely cratered terrain dominates the south polar region, moderately cratered plains underlie the polar deposits in the north polar region. The mottled cratered plains have been mantled by light deposits located in annular rings south of 70 N. The erosional boundaries between these deposits and the subjacent cratered plains are gradational, show no local topographic relief, and display a spiral serrated circumpolar pattern suggesting eolian erosion. Smooth plains and 'etch-pitted' plains underlie the central polar layered deposits in both polar regions. In addition, these plains have one other morphological variant in the north. Here they display a pattern of very coherent ripple-like waveforms varying in wavelength from several hundred meters to a few kilometers.

Frequency modulation television analysis: Distortion analysis

Computer simulation is used to calculate the time-domain waveform of standard T-pulse-and-bar test signal distorted in passing through an FM television system. The simulator includes flat or preemphasized systems and requires specification of the RF predetection filter characteristics. The predetection filters are modeled with frequency-symmetric Chebyshev (0.1-db ripple) and Butterworth filters. The computer was used to calculate distorted output signals for sixty-four different specified systems, and the output waveforms are plotted for all sixty-four. Comparison of the plotted graphs indicates that a Chebyshev predetection filter of four poles causes slightly more signal distortion than a corresponding Butterworth filter and the signal distortion increases as the number of poles increases. An increase in the peak deviation also increases signal distortion. Distortion also increases with the addition of preemphasis.

Analysis of self-oscillating dc-to-dc converters

The basic operational characteristics of dc-to-dc converters are analyzed along with the basic physical characteristics of power converters. A simple class of dc-to-dc power converters are chosen which could satisfy any set of operating requirements, and three different controlling methods in this class are described in detail. Necessary conditions for the stability of these converters are measured through analog computer simulation whose curves are related to other operational characteristics, such as ripple and regulation. Further research is suggested for the solution of absolute stability and efficient physical design of this class of power converters.

Compression of ephemerides

An algorithm is proposed for generating sequences of Chebyshev series which are the best approximations of an astronomical ephemeris in the sense of Chebyshev over large intervals of time. The criterion for a polynomial approximation of a function to be the best polynomial approximation of the function is that the error function present certain rippling characteristics as described by Remez (1957). General features of the program in PL/1 are described.

Analysis of a class of pulse modulated dc-to-dc power converters

The basic operational characteristics of dc-to-dc converters are analyzed. The basic physical characteristics of power converters are identified. A simple class of dc-to-dc power converters is chosen which could satisfy any set of operating requirements. Three different controlling methods in this class are described in detail. Necessary conditions for the stability of these converters are measured through analog computer simulation. These curves are related to other operational characteristics, such as ripple and regulation. Finally, further research is suggested for the solution of the physical design of absolutely stable, reliable, and efficient power converters of this class.

Silicon solid/state linear arrays for multispectral high resolution imaging systems

Solid-state, electronically scanned, linear detector arrays are now available which can be used in a pushbroom scan mode imaging system for high-resolution multispectral earth resource survey applications. These arrays provide high performance in the visible to near-IR region. Two performance criteria must be assessed in the choice of a detector array: signal-to-noise ratio and spectral response. Consideration of diffraction limitations shows that optics size cannot be significantly reduced by using very low-noise detectors. The required spectral response for a viable detector array should not have spectral ripples that cause a low-level, but significant, error in the detected effective reflectance of the target.

DSN research and technology support

The activities at the Venus Station (DSS 13) and the Microwave Test Facility, both operated by the Development Support Group, during the 6-month period ending October 15, 1975, were discussed and progress noted. Successful remote operation of the Venus Station from Pasadena during a pulsar observing track was described, along with significant tracking of the planet Venus in an interferometric planetary radar mode. Completion of the first phase of the demonstration of long-distance (1.6-km) transmission of microwave power was reported, with an RF-to-dc conversion efficiency of better than 80% and 30 kW of dc recovered. Routine transmission of clock synchronization signals to the overseas complexes with 64-m antenna stations was also discussed, and extensive analysis of a reported problem with the DSS 14 HV dc power supply which resulted in excessive ripple voltage interfering with transmitter operation was described.

M551 metals melting experiment

The Metals Melting Skylab Experiment consisted of selectively melting, in sequence, three rotating discs made of aluminum alloy, stainless steel, and tantalum alloy. For comparison, three other discs of the same three materials were similarly melted or welded on the ground. The power source of the melting was an electron beam unit. Results are presented which support the concept that the major difference between ground base and Skylab samples (i.e., large elongated grains in ground base samples versus nearly equiaxed and equal sized grains in Skylab samples) can be explained on the basis of constitutional supercooling, and not on the basis of surface phenomena. Microstructural observations on the weld samples and present explanations for some of these observations are examined. In particular, ripples and their implications to weld solidification were studied. Evidence of pronounced copper segregation in the Skylab A1 weld samples, and the tantalum samples studied, indicates a weld microhardness (and hence strength) that is uniformly higher than the ground base results, which is in agreement with previous predictions. Photographs are shown of the microstructure of the various alloys.

Synchronous Meteorological Satellite spin testing

The end-to-end spin tests conducted on the Synchronous Meteorological Satellite are described in detail. It is noted that the objective of these tests was to demonstrate that the satellite performed its intended functions under spinning conditions and that all satellite functions were tested except for solar-panel illumination, pyrotechnic-device operation, VISSR infrared operation, and auxiliary propulsion-system operation. Tests discussed include antenna pointing, S-band and UHF equivalent isotropic radiated power, output-power ripple, bit error rate, synchronous electromagnetic interference, earth width measurement, and satellite magnetic-field measurement. The purpose, technique, salient results, and problems of each test are outlined.

Extended performance solar electric propulsion thrust system study. Volume 5. Capacitor-diode voltage multiplier: Technology evaluation

A 1-kW capacitor-diode voltage multiplier (CDVM) was designed, fabricated and tested to demonstrate the power of feasibility of high power CDVM's and to verify the analytical techniques that had been used to predict the performance characteristics of a 6-kw CDVM. High efficiency (96.2%), a low ratio of component weight to power (0.55 kg/kW), and low output ripple voltage (less than 1%, peak to peak) were obtained during the operation of a 1-kW CDVM various input line, load current, and load fault conditions.

Mass drivers. 3: Engineering

This paper is the last of a series of three by the Mass-Driver Group of the 1977 Ames Summer Study. It develops the engineering principles required to implement the basic mass-driver design defined in paper I and as presented previously in the literature. Optimum component mass trade-offs are derived from a set of four input parameters, and the program used to design a lunar launcher. The mass optimization procedure is then incorporated into a more comprehensive mission optimization program called OPT-4, which evaluates an optimized mass-driver reaction engine and its performance in a range of specified missions. Finally, this paper discusses, to the extent that time permitted, certain peripheral problems: heating effects in buckets due to magnetic field ripple; an approximate derivation of guide force profiles; the mechanics of inserting and releasing payloads; the reaction mass orbits; and a proposed research and development plan for implementing mass drivers. This paper also considers further optimization that depends on advances in component technology beyond the present state. It is concluded that significant advantage can be gained in the case of small reaction engines with high emission velocity by developing lightweight packaging technology for silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCR's).

On the fine structure of cometary plasma tails

It is argued that the small-scale structures observed close to the plasma tail axis of comets may be a consequence of well-known finite-resistivity instabilities in the cometary cross-tail current sheet. While the 'tearing' mode instability, which causes a breakup of the layer along the current flow lines, may be responsible for the observed small condensation or 'knots' near the axis, the 'ripple' mode instability may give rise to the small-scale wavy structures.

A reflected-wave ruby maser with K-band tuning range and large instantaneous bandwidth

A novel maser concept is outlined and a unique design described which permits wide bandwidth and waveguide tuning range by employing four stages cascaded via cryogenically cooled circulators. Theoretical considerations for gain, bandwidth, gain ripple, and noise temperature are included. Operated on a closed-cycle helium refrigerator with a superconducting persistence-mode magnet, the four-stage amplifier is tunable from 18.3 to 26.6 GHz with 30 dB of net gain and achieves 240 MHz of 3-dB bandwidth near the center of this band. The measured noise temperature is 13 + or - 2 K referred to the room-temperature input flange. Applications are foreseen utilizing cooled parametric downconverters and upconverters with this amplifier at IF to extend the low-noise performance up to millimeter frequencies and down to L-band for radio astronomy and planetary spacecraft communications.
