Adjusting solar-induced fluorescence to nadir-viewing provides a better proxy for GPP

Solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) provides key information for inferring terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP). However, there is little research on analyzing the performance of nadir-adjusted SIF (SIF nadir ) on GPP, compared to total SIF emitted by all leaves (SIF total ) for reducing the viewing angle effects and estimating GPP. Besides, there have been controversial opinions on whether SIF total is better correlated to GPP than raw SIF observations (SIF obs ). Here we systematically analyzed the relationship between raw/nadir/total SIF (i.e., SIF obs , SIF nadir and SIF total ) and GPP and investigated the underlying mechanism, using multi-angular field measurements and eddy covariance data in wheat and corn crops at sub-daily scale. We further compared the performance of SIF obs , SIF nadir and SIF total in estimating GPP using the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) SIF and concurrent AmeriFlux measurements at daily scale. Furthermore, the results indicate that diurnal SIF nadir has stronger correlations to GPP than SIF obs for field measurements, with the increase of mean coefficient of determination (R 2 ) by 0.05–0.07 for far-red band and 0.11–0.20 for red band. SIF nadir shows comparable performance with SIF total for both far-red and red bands. Although the viewing angle effects dominate the difference in estimating GPP between SIF nadir and SIF obs , the correlation between light use efficiency (LUE) and fesc further determines the different performance of SIF nadir and SIF total in estimating GPP. TROPOMI-based analysis further confirms that SIF nadir overall has higher correlations to AmeriFlux GPP than SIF obs for different plant functional types and shows similar performance with SIF total . Compared to SIF total , the estimation of SIF nadir independent of viewing angle effects does not require any canopy structure parameters, and thus offers promising potential for reliably estimating regional and global GPP.

Predicting Liquid–Liquid Phase Separation of Submicrometer Proxies for Atmospheric Secondary Aerosol

Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) of atmospheric aerosols can significantly impact climate, air quality, and human health. However, their complex composition, small size, and history-dependent properties result in great uncertainty in the modeling of aerosol phase state and atmospheric processes. Herein, using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), we examined model submicron aerosols composed of organic compounds and ammonium sulfate, and established a parameterization for the separation relative humidity (SRH) that accounts for chemical composition, particle size, and equilibration time. We evaluated different variables that describe chemical composition: O/C ratio, partition coefficient, solubility, molar mass, and polarizability. The O/C ratio fits the SRH of micrometer droplets best, and by using a scaling factor to translate the micrometer SRH parameterization to submicron aerosols, we incorporate the effects of size and equilibration time. The measured scaling factor for the submicron mean SRH (30nm – 1μm, 20 min equilibration times) is 0.80, the factor becomes 1 with equilibration time over 1 hour, and is equal to 0, meaning that SRH is absent, when the aerosol dry diameter is smaller than 30 nm. Furthermore, our parameterization will aid in universal SRH modeling, potentially leading to more accurate predictions of aerosol mass, optical properties, hygroscopicity, and heterogeneous chemistry.

Correlated color temperature is not a suitable proxy for the biological potency of light

Using a simulation based on a real, five-channel tunable LED lighting system, we show that Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) is not a reasonable predictor of the biological potency of light, whether characterized with CIE melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (mel-EDI), Equivalent Melanopic Lux (EML) (a scalar multiple of mel-EDI), or Circadian Stimulus (CS). At a photopic corneal illuminance of 300 lx and Rf ≥ 70, spectra can vary in CS from 17 to 41% across CCTs from 2500 to 6000 K, and up to 23% at a single CCT, due to the choice of spectrum alone. The CS range is largest, and notably discontinuous, at a CCT of 3500 K, the location of the inflection point of the CS model. At a photopic corneal illuminance of 300 lx and Rf ≥ 70, mel-EDI can vary from 123 to 354 lx across CCTs from 2500 to 6000 K and can vary by up to 123 lx at a fixed CCT (e.g., 196 to 319 lx at 5000 K). The range of achievable mel-EDI increases as CCT increases and, on average, decreases as color fidelity, characterized with IES TM-30 Rf, increases. These data demonstrate that there is no easy mathematical conversion between CS and mel-EDI when a spectrally diverse spectra set of spectral power distributions is considered.

Non-invasive ventral cervical magnetoneurography as a proxy of in vivo lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation

Maintenance of autonomic homeostasis is continuously calibrated by sensory fibers of the vagus nerve and sympathetic chain that convey compound action potentials (CAPs) to the central nervous system. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) intravenous challenge reliably elicits a robust inflammatory response that can resemble systemic inflammation and acute endotoxemia. Here, we administered LPS intravenously in nine healthy subjects while recording ventral cervical magnetoneurography (vcMNG)-derived CAPs at the rostral Right Nodose Ganglion (RNG) and the caudal Right Carotid Artery (RCA) with optically pumped magnetometers (OPM). We observed vcMNG RNG and RCA neural firing rates that tracked changes in TNF-α levels in the systemic circulation. Further, endotype subgroups based on high and low IL-6 responders segregate RNG CAP frequency (at 30-120 min) and based on high and low IL-10 response discriminate RCA CAP frequency (at 0-30 min). These vcMNG tools may enhance understanding and management of the neuroimmune axis that can guide personalized treatment based on an individual’s distinct endophenotype.

Radiance-based NIR v as a proxy for GPP of corn and soybean

Substantial uncertainty exists in daily and sub-daily gross primary production (GPP) estimation, which dampens accurate monitoring of the global carbon cycle. Here we find that near-infrared radiance of vegetation (NIR v,Rad ), defined as the product of observed NIR radiance and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), can accurately estimate corn and soybean GPP at daily and half-hourly time scales, benchmarked with multi-year tower-based GPP at three sites with different environmental and irrigation conditions. Overall, NIR v,Rad explains 84% and 78% variations of half-hourly GPP for corn and soybean, respectively, outperforming NIR reflectance of vegetation (NIR v,Ref ), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and far-red solar-induced fluorescence (SIF760). The strong linear relationship between NIR v,Rad and absorbed photosynthetically active radiation by green leaves (APAR green ), and that between APAR green and GPP, explain the good NIR v,Rad -GPP relationship. The NIR v,Rad -GPP relationship is robust and consistent across sites. The scalability and simplicity of NIR v,Rad indicate a great potential to estimate daily or sub-daily GPP from high-resolution and/or long-term satellite remote sensing data.

Far-UV Fe emission as proxy of Eddington ratios

ABSTRACT The Eddington ratio is a key parameter that governs the diversity of quasar properties. It can be scaled with a strong anticorrelation between optical Fe iiopt and [O iii] emission. In search of such indicators in the far-UV band, the Hubble Space Telescope far-UV spectra of 150 low-redshift quasars are analysed in combination with their optical SDSS counterparts. The strength of Fe ii+Fe iii λ1123 emission is significantly correlated with that of Fe iiopt. A moderate correlation may also exist between Fe ii λ1071 and Fe iiopt. The finding opens the possibility that far-UV Fe ii emission may serve as a new gauge of the Eddington ratios. The high- and low-ionization lines in the far-UV band display different patterns: for the quasars with higher Eddington ratios, the low-ionization UV lines are stronger, and the high-ionization lines are broader and weaker.

Extending quantum key distribution through proxy re-encryption

Modern quantum key distribution (QKD) network designs are based on sending photons from one node to another and require free-space or dedicated fiber optic cables between nodes. The purpose of this is to co-generate secret key material on both sides of the quantum channel. In addition to this quantum link, there are several insecure classical channels that allow QKD algorithms to exchange book-keeping information and send symmetrically encrypted data. The attenuation of photons transmitted through fiber becomes too high to practically generate key material over fiber at distances of more than 100 km. Free-space transmission through the atmosphere or the vacuum of space can reduce attenuation, but at the cost of system complexity and sensitivity to other impairments, such as weather. To extend the effective range of QKD networks, we present a method that combines QKD algorithms with post-quantum, homomorphic key-switching to allow multiple parties to effectively share secret key material over longer distances through semi-trusted relay nodes. We define how such a system should work for arbitrary network topologies and provide proofs that our scheme is both correct and secure. We assess the feasibility of this solution by building and evaluating two implementations based on lattice-based cryptography: learning with errors.

Comparison of ML-Based Proxy Modeling Strategies: Lessons Learned from the SMART Initiative

Teams of researchers on Task 5 of the SMART project have developed a variety of modeling architectures to predict subsurface behavior during carbon injection and post-injection periods. One important part of this task was to compare the candidate approaches in terms of accuracy, reliability, speed, and memory use, all using a common set of metrics and visualizations for an “apples to apples” comparison. Dr. Jared Schuetter will share the details of this task, the results that were obtained, and the lessons learned.
