A model for the execution time of parallel algorithms on processor arrays is described. The model is validated for the conjugate gradient algorithm on the eight processor Finite Element Machine at NASA Langley Research Center. Model predictions are also included for this algorithm on a larger array as the number of processors and system parameters are varied.
Software SAR processing techniques defined to treat Shuttle Imaging Radar-B (SIR-B) data are reviewed. The algorithms are devised for the data processing procedure selection, SAR correlation function implementation, multiple array processors utilization, cornerturning, variable reference length azimuth processing, and range migration handling. The Interim Digital Processor (IDP) originally implemented for handling Seasat SAR data has been adapted for the SIR-B, and offers a resolution of 100 km using a processing procedure based on the Fast Fourier Transformation fast correlation approach. Peculiarities of the Seasat SAR data processing requirements are reviewed, along with modifications introduced for the SIR-B. An Advanced Digital SAR Processor (ADSP) is under development for use with the SIR-B in the 1986 time frame as an upgrade for the IDP, which will be in service in 1984-5.
The basic acousto-optic signal processing architectures (spectrum analyzer, space-integrating, time-integrating, and triple product processor) systems and algorithms such as the chirp-Z transform are reviewed. New acousto-optic data processing systems and applications that utilze these basic architectures and new ones are described. These include a matched spatial filter acousto-optic processor, two new hybrid time and space-integrating systems, a triple product processor, and four new matrix-vector iterative feedback systems.
Computer serves as pipelined processor for imagery or other two-dimensional digital data. Processor does feature extraction, smoothing, edge detection, texture measurement, and stereoscoptic area correlation. Also plans routes for obstacle avoidance by robots and solves two-dimensional partial differential equations. Image processor consists of modular units: each includes set of computing elements of types particularly useful in pipelined-image processing. Flexible interconnection scheme used to route data to subsequent stages of pipeline.
The Model SP-320 device is a monolithic realization of a complex general purpose signal processor, incorporating such features as a 32-bit ALU, a 16-bit x 16-bit combinatorial multiplier, and a 16-bit barrel shifter. The SP-320 is designed to operate as a slave processor to a host general purpose computer in applications such as coherent integration of a radar return signal in multiple ranges, or dedicated FFT processing. Presently available is an I/O module conforming to the Intel Multichannel interface standard; other I/O modules will be designed to meet specific user requirements. The main processor board includes input and output FIFO (First In First Out) memories, both with depths of 4096 W, to permit asynchronous operation between the source of data and the host computer. This design permits burst data rates in excess of 5 MW/s.
A Multibus-based parallel processor simulation system is described. The system is intended to serve as a vehicle for gaining hands-on experience, testing system and application software, and evaluating parallel processor performance during development of a larger system based on the horizontal/vertical-bus interprocessor communication mechanism. The prototype system consists of up to seven Intel iSBC 86/12A single-board computers which serve as processing elements, a multiple transmission controller (MTC) designed to support system operation, and an Intel Model 225 Microcomputer Development System which serves as the user interface and input/output processor. All components are interconnected by a Multibus/IEEE 796 bus. An important characteristic of the system is that it provides a mechanism for a processing element to broadcast data to other selected processing elements. This parallel transfer capability is provided through the design of the MTC and a minor modification to the iSBC 86/12A board. The operation of the MTC, the basic hardware-level operation of the system, and pertinent details about the iSBC 86/12A and the Multibus are described.
Given a discretization stencil, partitioning the problem domain is an important first step for the efficient solution of partial differential equations on multiple processor systems. Partitions are derived that minimize interprocessor communication when the number of processors is known a priori and each domain partition is assigned to a different processor. This partitioning technique uses the stencil structure to select appropriate partition shapes. For square problem domains, it is shown that non-standard partitions (e.g., hexagons) are frequently preferable to the standard square partitions for a variety of commonly used stencils. This investigation is concluded with a formalization of the relationship between partition shape, stencil structure, and architecture, allowing selection of optimal partitions for a variety of parallel systems.
The optimal partitioning of random distributed programs is discussed. It is concluded that the optimal partitioning of a homogeneous random program over a homogeneous distributed system either assigns all modules to a single processor, or distributes the modules as evenly as possible among all processors. The analysis rests heavily on the approximation which equates the expected maximum of a set of independent random variables with the set's maximum expectation. The results are strengthened by providing an approximation-free proof of this result for two processors under general conditions on the module execution time distribution. It is also shown that use of this approximation causes two of the previous central results to be false.
High-accuracy optical linear algebra processors are addressed with attention to three new aspects. These include: their application to the solution of finite-element problems; the first error-source models for component errors in such processors; and the first analysis of error sources in such processors.
The main purpose in this paper is to lay a theoretical foundation for the design of mesh-connected processor arrays for the transitive closure problem. Using a simple path-algebraic formulation of the problem and observing its similarity to certain well-known smoothing problems that occur in digital signal processing, it is shown how to draw upon existing techniques from the signal processing literature to derive regular iterative algorithms for determining the transitive closure of the graph. The regular iterative algorithms that are derived using these considerations, are then analyzed and synthesized on mesh-connected processor arrays. Among the vast number of mesh-connected processor arrays that can be designed using this unified approach, the systolic arrays reported in the literature for this problem are shown to be special cases.
The Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) was designed as a special machine for specific applications in image processing. As a parallel machine, with a large number of processors that can be reconfigured in different combinations it is also applicable to other problems that require a large number of processors. The solution of linear systems of equations on the MPP is investigated. The solution times achieved are compared to those obtained with a serial machine and the performance of the MPP is discussed.
The noise due to finite-word-length effects is analyzed for digital-signal power processors using Welch's power-spectrum estimation technique to measure the power of Gaussian random signals over a frequency band of interest. The input of the digital signal processor contains a finite-length time interval in which the true Gaussian signal is contaminated by Gaussian noise. The roundoff noise-to-signal ratio in the measurement of the signal power is derived, and computer simulations which validate the analytical results are presented. These results can be used in tradeoff studies of hardware design, such as the number of bits required at each processing stage. The results presented in this paper are currently being used in the design of a digital Doppler processor (Chi et al., 1986) for a radar scatterometer.

A prototype multi-channel laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) processor was assembled using a wideband transient recorder and a microcomputer with an array processor for fast Fourier transform (FFT) computations. The prototype instrument was used to acquire, process, and record signals from a three-component wind tunnel LDA system subject to various conditions of noise and flow turbulence. The recorded data was used to evaluate the effectiveness of burst acceptance criteria, processing algorithms, and selection of processing parameters such as record length. The recorded signals were also used to obtain comparative estimates of signal-to-noise ratio between time-domain and frequency-domain signal detection schemes. These comparisons show that the FFT processing scheme allows accurate processing of signals for which the signal-to-noise ratio is 10 to 15 dB less than is practical using counter processors.
This paper reports some ongoing research efforts at Stanford in allocation of parallel processing resources. Both processor structures and program structures have their own characteristics. Resource allocation binds the two structures during program execution. The mapping problem determines what processor structure and program structure may be combined to obtain maximum speedup. Three approaches to this mapping problem are considered. Two important factors, granularity and interaction delay, are also considered. A new hierarchical approach to structure definition is outlined. Effective and efficient tools are necessary for the study of the mapping problem. A fast turn-around simulation environment developed for investigating partition strategies for distributed computations and a computationally efficient method to predict performance of parallel processor structures are described.
Three innovative components combined to produce all-digital signal processor with superior characteristics: outstanding accuracy, high-dynamics tracking, versatile integration times, lower loss-of-lock signal strengths, and infrequent cycle slips. Three components are digital chip advancer, digital carrier downconverter and code correlator, and digital tracking processor. All-digital signal processor intended for use in receivers of Global Positioning System (GPS) for geodesy, geodynamics, high-dynamics tracking, and ionospheric calibration.
The impact of a five year space mission environment on fault-tolerant parallel processor architectures is examined. The target application is a Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) satellite requiring 256 parallel processors to provide the computation throughput. The reliability requirements are that the system still be operational after five years with .99 probability and that the probability of system failure during one-half hour of full operation be less than 10(-7). The fault tolerance features an architecture must possess to meet these reliability requirements are presented, many potential architectures are briefly evaluated, and one candidate architecture, the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory's Fault-Tolerant Parallel Processor (FTPP) is evaluated in detail. A methodology for designing a preliminary system configuration to meet the reliability and performance requirements of the mission is then presented and demonstrated by designing an FTPP configuration.
